It is with absolute joy and no small amount of confusion that I make the following announcement:

Velveteen vs. The Seasons is under discussion to be released this coming Memorial Day weekend at Marcon in Columbus, Ohio. Like the first two volumes, it will be a hardcover from ISFiC Press. It will include all the stories released after the end of volume two (and possibly a few that I haven't had the chance to post yet, depending on how my schedule shakes out).

Action! Adventure! Punching things! Vel having a really, really lousy time! Honestly, I can't wait.

This does, however, bring us to a point of administrative order: my contract terms with ISFiC are for two year periods. This means that at the end of this month, the first two Velveteen volumes will no longer be available for purchase in eBook form. The physical books will remain available until they sell out, and the stories will remain available for free on this blog, but the collected eBooks? Gone. So get 'em now or get 'em never.

I am so thrilled to know that Vel's next big adventure is going to be a book, and I think you're really going to like where things go. My bunny-girl sure did make it a lot farther than I ever thought she would.

For justice!

FOR CAKE!

Title: Velveteen Presents Polychrome vs. The Court of Public Opinion and Not Punching Anyone.
Summary: And now for something completely different. Velveteen is gone, and Polychrome is still putting her life back together, one heroic escapade at a time.

Victory Anna's whoops of joy echoed over the rooftops. Someone on the ground below might have mistaken them for screams, but Polychrome was close enough to see the sheer glee in the other woman's face as pursued the giant clockwork bats across the sky...Collapse )

Velveteen vs. Spring Cleaning.

Velveteen vs. The Thaw.

Title: Velveteen vs. The Thaw.

The sky over Santa's Village was clear, affording the citizens a beautiful view of the Northern Lights, which painted the air in a hundred shimmering shades of orange, green, pink, and pearlescent blue...Collapse )
So it turns out that there are some admin tasks that I was really good at when I had a day job, but am not so good at when "wander away from the computer and watch an episode of Law & Order" is on the table. The review roundup is one of these tasks. I will strive to do better, if only because my notes file is becoming impossible to navigate. This is the first step toward doing better.

Brewing Tea & Books has posted a review of Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots, and says, "This book is in one word: Fun." The review goes on to say "But if I have to write a bit more, since one word reviews aren’t very interesting now are they. The book is not only very entertaining and funny, it is also very intelligent and thought-provoking." (Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots is available now from ISFic Press, or via Borderlands Books in San Francisco; they should be getting a shipment soon, and books ordered from them can be signed or personalized.)

Jennifer Brozek has reviewed Half-Off Ragnarok, and says, "Half-Off Ragnarok is my favorite book in the InCryptid series thus far. I thought Verity was interesting but I’m half in love with Alex. The whole Price family is a hoot and Shelby is an interesting wild card in the mix. If urban fantasy, intriguing animals, and fast-paced adventure is your thing, you’re going to love Half-Off Ragnarok. Highly recommended." Woo!

Vampire Book Club has reviewed Ashes of Honor, and says, "Let’s cut to the chase. Ashes of Honor is THE book." I'm...just going to leave that there and wander off. Because dude.

Amazing Stories has reviewed Chimes at Midnight, and says, "Urban fantasy novels are big right now and it’s hard not to love Toby Daye, the unlikely knight and changeling protagonist of Seanan McGuire's popular series set in magic-rich San Francisco. Chimes at Midnight is book seven in the on-going series and, now we’ve met the characters and had hints dropped about the history of the Kingdom in the Mists, the story is getting fascinating." Woo!

Finally for today, Whatchamacallit Reviews has reviewed Games Creatures Play, and had this to say about my story: "Seanan McGuire takes readers into her Incryptid world. Fans of the series will enjoy reading a fun roller derby story from the youngest sibling (and only sibling not to get a book yet) Antinomy’s POV. Readers who have not read the series should read the series, not because they need to in order to understand this short story, just because it this is a fun and entertaining series."

That's all for now: more to come, including a focused roundup about Sparrow Hill Road, shortly.
...a copy of Velveteen vs. The Multiverse!

Welcome to the second of the Twelve Days of Hogswatch. I will be starting a new giveaway every day between now and January 6th (the day after my birthday). Each giveaway will have different rules, and a different deadline, although all prizes will be mailed on January 9th, because I am bad at going to the post office.

This giveaway is for a shiny new copy of Velveteen vs. The Multiverse, the second volume in the adventures of Velma "Velveteen" Martinez, crankiest superheroine this side of the Mississippi. This is going to be a random number drawing with a twist, because I am silly. So...

1. To enter, comment on this post.
2. If you are international, indicate both this and your willingness to pay postage.
3. Explain your superpower. What is it? How does it work? What are your strengths and weaknesses?

I will choose the winner at 1PM PST on Monday, December 30th, by randomly selecting two heroes and deciding the outcome of a fight. (Note: "my superpower is I can do anything" means you will inevitably be defeated by Squirrel Girl. That's what she's for. Remember that in the Velveteen-verse, cunning and treachery often defeats raw strength.)

Game on!

Velveteen vs. Hypothermia.

Title: Velveteen vs. Hypothermia.
Summary: The trials of a formerly retired superheroine are destined never to be done, especially when the heroine in question was foolish enough to agree to spend a year in each of three seasons, all vying for her hand...

Happy holidays!

The door that opened in the fabric of reality had no foundation, no wall to hold it in place or justify its existence...Collapse )
People of Earth! If you have been waiting for the ebook release of Velveteen vs. The Multiverse, wait no longer! Finally the files are here!

Like the first volume, Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots, the ebook is priced at $9.99. I understand that this is high for an ebook, but a) it's a small publisher trying to recoup costs, and b) all the stories remain free to read online. So please buy the ebook to help me feed my cats, and please don't complain about the cost. If you don't like the price, you can always read the exact same stories here on my blog, free of charge, forever. (The stories as they appear in the books have been edited lightly for continuity, and checked for spelling and grammar errors. They are still 90% the same as they were in their first appearance.)

The wait is over! Let the wild rumpus begin!

ETA: IsFIC is dealing with some technical issues. I will not respond to questions about technical issues. I know nothing of the technical issues. I cannot help you. I'm sorry.
So I know you've all been waiting anxiously to see the cover of Velveteen vs. The Multiverse, and I am delighted to finally be able to oblige you. But! Nothing beautiful comes without a cost, and so I must regretfully inform you all that, due to production issues, Velveteen vs. The Multiverse has been delayed slightly, and will not be available at Musecon. Believe me, no one is more disappointed than I am.

Pre-orders are available now, and you can find the information here:

http://isficpress.com/multiverse.php

You may notice that the cover price has increased, from $25 for the first volume to $30. Well, that's because this volume is literally twice as long, and thus cost more to print. You are getting so much extra bang for your buck, I can't even begin to express my joy.

And now, behold the pretty:

vel_lj

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS OH MY GOD IT'S THE COVER TO VELVETEEN VS. THE MULTIVERSE AND IT'S GORGEOUS!

All the versions of Velveteen are there, Marionette and Roadkill and everybody! I could not be happier.

What do you think?

Velveteen vs. The Aftermath.

So it's done: the story is told, and we've all had time to sit back and digest it. There was a lot of evolution, growth, and change between "Velveteen vs. The Isley Crawfish Festival" and "Velveteen vs. The Epilogue," and I like to think that was a good thing.

The character of Velveteen has been with me for a long time; there are sketches of her dating back to high school, which puts her in about the same era of inception as Toby Daye. That may explain some of their similarities: the parental issues, the trust issues, the perpetual poverty and fear of going hungry. These are all things that I was struggling with during high school, and for several years after. While I don't base my characters off of myself intentionally, there's an aspect of "write what you know" that is simply unavoidable. She didn't have a civilian name for years, but when the time came to start writing her story down, I named her Velma, after a friend of mine who needed a pick-me-up. And thus was Velma Martinez properly born.

The first "Velveteen vs." story had a weird genesis. See, I was getting ready to go to Worldcon in Melbourne, Australia, and I realized that going to Australia is expensive. Like, it costs a lot. So I started doing things to save money. I cut back on caffeine and new book purchases, and I began selling blog sponsorships. I did the math on how many dollars I would need to save every day, and said "pay me this much money and that day is yours." And people did!

My very first sponsorship was for an anonymous group called The Crawfish Minions. Wanting to start the sponsorships off with a bang, I decided I'd write them a little story about crawfish. Velveteen seemed like the perfect character to fight river-dwelling crustaceans, and somehow my "little story" grew into the first Velveteen adventure. This is also the reason for the early installment weirdness in that one: I hadn't paused to think things through just yet. The shape of the world was there, but there's more snark in the narration (the characters would always remain snarky, I wrote them), and Velveteen monologues at the Claw for no apparent reason (something which she thankfully never did again). Still, people liked it a lot, and it was fun, and things progressed from there. As they always do. To quote Amy: "Where'd those 10,000 words come from? Did you trip?"

I did at least sit down to figure out a bit more of the shape of the setting before the second story. I knew who Sparkle Bright and Action Dude were, their relationships to Velveteen, and what had really caused their falling-out before I wrote "vs. The Coffee Freaks," although it wasn't until "vs. The Flashback Sequence" that I realized just how deeply Sparkle Bright had been, and still was, in love with Velveteen. You can see the signs if you go back to Yelena's early appearances; she's very clearly dealing with a crush, and very clearly has no idea how to handle it. Whereas poor Aaron was just clueless from day one.

A lot of the secondary characters were unplanned, including several who became incredibly important. Jackie Frost and the Princess were intended as one-offs, showing that Velveteen had friends outside of The Super Patriots, but once I'd allowed them into the story, they refused to leave. The Princess was always transgender; it's part of her origin story. I honestly wasn't sure I'd be able to reveal that on screen until the scene with Jolly Roger's ship, which gave me an opportunity to force everyone into stating their birth names. Tag was introduced because otherwise Velveteen's inevitable reunion with Action Dude would be too easy. Um. Sorry, Action Dude. Didn't mean to break your happy ending.

Maybe the most important of the accidental characters was Victory Anna. I knew that Polychrome needed to have a girlfriend, and I knew that I wanted her to be a gadgeteer, because we didn't have one in the main cast. I wanted to show that power set, even if it was only for one story. So I introduced a time-traveling steampunk gadget-girl, and just sort of ran with it. Because Yelena is described as looking a lot like my friend Torrey, I described Victoria as looking a lot like Vixy. Yes. I just built in the opportunities for cosplay.

Victory Anna was supposed to be a one-off. She absolutely wasn't supposed to become the first character other than Velveteen to have a story focusing on just her (and remains one of only two who have been given their own narrative: the other was Jackie Frost). And she definitely wasn't supposed to turn into a member of the "core team."

Whoops.

On the whole, this series of stories evolved into something larger, more complex, and more honest than I could ever have intended. It's about figuring out who you are and being willing to fight for it, because nothing comes free; it's about forgiving people who hurt you, and sometimes even letting them back into your life; it's about love. Because love is good, and we need more of it.

It took me a long time to tell Velveteen's story.

I think it was worth the wait.

Giveaway results.

...and wow, are these not being mailed out before Christmas; the Post Office looks like a circle of Hell right now, and I can't imagine entering it for anything less than a little slip that says "We have your package, it's meowing and smells like candy corn, we can only guess that it is a genetically-engineered Maine Coon that never sheds, claws things, or makes unpleasant smells in the middle of the night while you're trying to sleep." So these beauties will be sent out after the new year.

With that, the two winners of our sponsored copies of Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots are:

greenman23
salexa

Please send your mailing information via my website contact form ASAP. Since I'm not promising quick postage, I'm going to be lenient this time; you have until Christmas to get it to me. If I do not receive your info by then, new winners will be chosen.

Thanks to everyone for playing, and big, big thanks to the generous sponsors of this giveaway. You make the holidays brighter.

Happy holidays!
Thanks to the great generosity of two anonymous fans, I have two more copies of Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots to send out into the world! For great justice! In an effort to keep things simple, we're going to do a random number drawing. So to enter...

1. Leave a comment on this post.
2. Identify your country of origin.

...and that's all. In this case, "identify your country of origin" is so I know if I need customs forms. The giveaway is open to all, and as this giveaway is being sponsored by wonderful, generous people, international postage is already covered.

I will select two winners on Friday, December 21st. I cannot guarantee that books will be mailed before Christmas, but I will try.

Game on!

Current projects, December 2012.

So in the November post I mentioned that it was weird to be coming on Christmas and not planning for Disney World. Then I realized I could fix that, and so we're going to Disneyland for my birthday in January. (January 5th. I like birthdays.) PROBLEM SOLVED!

Anyway, this is the post in which I tell you what I'm working on, and you finally understand why I don't have time for tea. To quote myself, being too harried to say something new: "These posts are labeled with the month and year, in case somebody eventually gets the crazy urge to timeline my work cycles (it'll probably be me). Behold the proof that I don't actually sleep; I just whimper and keep writing."

Please note that all books currently in print are off the list, as are those that have been turned in but not yet printed (Midnight Blue-Light Special, Parasite). The cut-tag is here to stay, because no matter what I do, it seems like this list just keeps on getting longer. But that's okay, because at least it means I'm never actively bored. I have horror movies and terrible things from the swamp to keep me company.

Not everything on this list has been sold. I will not discuss the sale status of anything which has not been publicly announced. If you can't remember whether I've announced something, check the relevant tag. Please don't ask why project X is no longer on the list.

What's Seanan working on now? Click to find out!Collapse )
My darlingest dearest Paul Cornell asked me to write a post about one of the twelve days of Christmas for his blog, and because he has a newborn son and thus gets to ask me for free content without being looked at sadly, I wrote a post about the hidden blackbirds that come on the fourth day. Four colly birds for all of you!

Jennifer Brozek had a lovely dream and I was in it and it was wonderful, and now you can see it in illustrated, murderous form. Happiness and joy.

This Etsy store has the best handmade catnip eyeballs in the world. There is no joy like watching a cat gleefully maul a giant human eye. NO JOY IN THIS WORLD. Plus we've sold out their stock like, twice since I discovered them. Let's do it again.

I have a Tumblr now. Tumblrs are cool. And while this won't be true for long, if you go there right now, you'll actually get a lovely graphic illustration of how many fucks I have left to give. Hint: not many.

In limited edition news, A Fantasy Medley 2 and When Will You Rise remain available from Subterranean Press, and Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots remains available from ISFIC Press. Velveteen is available in hardcover and ebook formats, the others are hardcover only.

Now, this is important: all three of the books listed above are limited edition, and the print runs are really small. So while they're available now, they won't be available forever. Please keep that in mind, because I will just look sad and shake my head if asked in six months whether I have any for sale. Also, you can get When Will You Rise and Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots signed and personalized for the holidays by contacting Borderlands Books.

And that's the news.
Title: Velveteen vs. The Retroactive Continuity.

Title: Velveteen vs. The Alternate Timeline, Part II.
Summary: Into every superhero's life the occasional alternate timeline must fall. Whether she wants it to or not. Of course, then the question becomes...what if you like this new timeline better? Part I is here, if you need to refresh your memory.

Waking was a long, slow process made more difficult by the fact that all Velveteen's muscles felt like they'd been scooped out and replaced with strips of wet cotton...Collapse )

Winner of the second VELVETEEN giveaway.

First off, I just want you to know that I had to generate three random numbers to get one winner. Why? Because the first two were people volunteering to pay postage. Thank you all so much. I should be getting more author's copies soon; once they arrive, I'll see about pulling another winner out of that post.

Secondly, the winner of this copy of Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots is sylviamcivers. Sylvia, please drop me a line via my website contact page within the next twenty-four hours. If I don't hear from you inside that window, I will have to draw another winner.

Thank you again to everyone who participated, and offered to help out. Y'all are awesome.

The winner is!...and another drawing.

And the winner of Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots is...

geekhyena!

geekhyena, please send me your mailing information via my website contact form within the next twenty-four hours. If I do not receive your information, I will select another winner.

Speaking of selecting another winner, it's time for another drawing. This one is something I've been meaning to do for a while: a good faith drawing.

Look. Times are tough right now, and with the holidays coming, a lot of us don't have a huge amount of disposable income. I know a $25 hardcover isn't always in my budget, even when I really really want it. So that is what this drawing is for. If you want a copy but can't afford it, please comment to let me know you'd like to be entered. I will select a winner on Tuesday morning.

I don't need to know why you can't afford the book; I just ask that you only enter if you genuinely can't find the dollars right now. That way, we make things a little more level for everybody.

Same region rules as last time: US welcome, non-US only if you can pay postage. And because this has come up before, if you're in the US and would like to volunteer to pay postage for a non-US resident, you can. For this drawing, comment on the main entry if you can pay non-US postage, and while that comment won't win, I will be able to go back to it if someone from outside the US does.

If this works, I'll try to do it again. Let's spread some holiday cheer...FOR JUSTICE!

ETA: This drawing is now closed. Thank you!
I have just received confirmation that both When Will You Rise and Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots are now shipping! These books represent my first solo hardcovers, one under each of my names, and like so many good things, they are here for a limit time.

When Will You Rise: Stories to End the World is published by Subterranean Press, and is limited to 1,000 signed and numbered copies. This gorgeously illustrated collection contains "Countdown" and "Apocalypse Scenario #683: The Box." If you place an order within the next few days, it should reach you in time for the holidays. Oh, and did I mention that we got a starred review from Publishers Weekly? Because yeah. We totally did.

Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots is published by ISFIC Press, and is also limited to 1,000 copies. You can obtain signed copies directly from the publisher, or by contacting Borderlands Books. If you place an order within the next few days, it should reach you in time for the holidays. This volume contains the Velveteen stories through "Velveteen vs. The Blind Date," along with all-new supplemental material, an introduction by Jim Hines, and a valediction by Carrie Vaughn. I'm really happy with it.

So those are my new hardcovers, and they're beautiful, and I'm totally excited about them. Glee!

Current projects, November 2012.

We're halfway through November, and I have to say, it's weird reaching this point in the year and not being in the process of getting ready to head for Disney World. Like, every morning I wake up going "is it Disney o'clock yet?", and then every morning I have to realize that Disney o'clock isn't coming back until May. Boo.

A giveaway! FOR JUSTICE!

I have copies of Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots, and guys, it is a pretty, pretty book. Very solid, very well-designed and awesome. And that means I should give a couple of copies away.

This is the first giveaway. It is open to all, with the caveat that if you are outside the United States, you must be willing to pay postage if you win. I am sorry about that, but I can't afford international postage right now. If that's cool with you, yay! If it's not, I really am sorry, and hopefully will win the lottery soon.

To enter, leave a comment with your location (US/non-US), and what super power you would have if you lived in Velveteen's universe. Winners will be selected via random number generator, BUT! If you don't include everything above, you cannot win.

I will randomly select a winner on Sunday, November 18th, so that I can mail the book before Thanksgiving.

Good luck! Game on!
Title: Velveteen vs. The Alternate Timeline, Part I.
Summary: Into every superhero's life the occasional alternate timeline must fall. Whether she wants it to or not. Of course, then the question becomes...what if you like this new timeline better?

Velveteen stumbled into her bedroom somewhere between midnight and two o'clock in the morning, muscles aching from a long night of chasing would-be evil-doers over rooftops and through the streets of Portland...Collapse )

To the minibar...FOR JUSTICE!

You guys.

You guys, you guys.

I am absolutely stupid with delight that I get to announce this now. STUPID WITH DELIGHT. Guess what I'm announcing. Go on, guess.

Have you guessed yet?

On November 9th, 2012, ISFiC Press will be publishing Velveteen vs. The Junior Super Patriots, volume one in the ongoing adventures of Velma "Velveteen" Martinez.

That's right. A print edition.

ARE YOU EXCITED YET?!

The book will be printed as a limited hardcover edition of 1,000 copies, with cover art by the incomparable Dave Dorman. If you're coming to WindyCon, you'll be able to pick up your copy on the spot. If not, you can order through their website above. The anticipated cover price is $25.00, although we won't know for sure until we get the quote back from the printer.

For those of you who don't do physical books anymore, there will also be an eBook edition, priced at $9.99.

(Please don't complain to me about the eBook price. All the stories remain freely available for your reading pleasure. Buying the eBook just means you're helping to feed my cats, and for that, I thank you.)

According to my contact at ISFiC, the book will be...

"Available through the ISFiC Press website for both hardcover and e-book. Also available through Amazon.com for hardcover, but their ordering and shipping arrangements are Byzantine for small publishers, so you will get it cheaper from them and faster from ISFiC Press.

"E-book edition should be available also from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBookStore, Reader Store, Kobo, Copia, Gardners, Baker & Taylor, and eBookPie."

This volume collects "Velveteen vs. The Isley Crawfish Festival" through "Velveteen vs. The Blind Date," with all new supplemental files on Vel and her allies, an introduction by Jim "Captain Escher" Hines, and an afterward by Carrie "Goblin Shark" Vaughn. All the stories have been revised and rewritten to bring them into full alignment.

I am, like, super-excited about this book, and I'm probably going to wind up buying like ten copies just for myself. So you should totally get yours before they're all up, up, and away.

Velveteen in print.

Eeeeeeeeeeee.
