But time passes; the Turtle moves; the work goes on, and my fear and my sadness do not mean I can let y'all miss things you might want to know about. So:
It is my privilege to announce that I (as Mira Grant) am doing another novella with Subterranean Press. Final Girls is a story about virtual reality, psychotherapy, corporate espionage, and figuring out exactly who you are. According to the website...
What if you could fix the worst parts of yourself by confronting your worst fears?
Dr. Jennifer Webb has invented proprietary virtual reality technology that purports to heal psychological wounds by running clients through scenarios straight out of horror movies and nightmares. In a carefully controlled environment, with a medical cocktail running through their veins, sisters might develop a bond they've been missing their whole lives—while running from the bogeyman through a simulated forest. But...can real change come so easily?
Esther Hoffman doubts it. Esther has spent her entire journalism career debunking pseudoscience, after phony regression therapy ruined her father’s life. She's determined to unearth the truth about Dr. Webb’s budding company. Dr. Webb’s willing to let her, of course, for reasons of her own. What better advertisement could she get than that of a convinced skeptic? But Esther's not the only one curious about how this technology works. Enter real-world threats just as frightening as those created in the lab. Dr. Webb and Esther are at odds, but they may also be each other's only hope of survival.
Limited to 1,250 signed, numbered copies, Final Girls is available for pre-order now, and will be shipping in April. This is going to be a gorgeous book. Julie Dillon, who did the cover for Rolling in the Deep, is doing the cover for this one too, and I am so excited. Remember that Rolling in the Deep sold out fast, and is now virtually unattainable unless you're lucky or have a book budget I really envy, and order yours today!

But 40$ plus international shipping is quite hefty, especially für 112 pages :/
In any case, I hope (for you) that it sells out just as quickly as Rolling in the Deep and brings its readers...uhm...if not exactly joy, then pleasure and/or excitement. (It doesn't read like a particularly joyful story ;) )

The one thing you might do is check with Borderlands Books, in San Francisco, on whether they're planning to stock the title. They can sometimes bring the cost of shipping down a bit, since they're coastal and also doing it by hand, rather than on an institutional level.

Even if I can't 'profit' from it, I am sure it will make others happy :)
I'll keep an eye out for Borderland Books then, thank you for the suggestion.

Then I remember people like you, Ms. McGuire. Dreamers, creators, singers, artists, and people who just plain care.
That makes me feel a little better.

And therefore I ask: is there anything I can do to help you make it through this, on the short term scale?

I have one more day of news avoidance (except Biden memes) before heading back into the fray and trying to figure out how to make the world a better place. I've got a Not Straight (her preferred label) kid, and we cried tears of joy together when gay marriage became legal. I've solemnized two gay marriages in the past year and a half. Most of my kids' friends aren't white. I gave myself a week to mourn, and now I just need to find my place to stand.

Thank you for some good news and something concrete to look forward to in this political hellscape. It's greatly appreciated.

But on the other hand you're the main reason my annual book budget has increased by so much!! In any case, I'll be at one (or both) or your UW Bookstore signings, where I will be purchasing several more books for myself, and as holiday gifts.

I cannot wait for April!

Because fundamentalists. :-(
Fred Small: "Tom Paxton said it best. Some folks you don't have to satirize; you just quote 'em." Last night, when I told a friend that Pence was one of the fundies who maintain that it's an insult to God to not use up all of the resources before the world is destroyed, she thought I was joking. There's a downside to having a habit of joking by saying absurd things with a deadpan delivery. And those people are so absurd. Except... one can't laugh, under the circumstances.
