EVERY HEART A DOORWAY...

...every word a prayer.

Every Heart a Doorway is in the wild and in the world today. It's a beautiful book. Saying nothing about its contents, only about the book as a physical object, it's a beautiful book. The cover, the heft, the whole design, it's just gorgeous. And I made this. Me. This book exists because Lee Harris said "write me a thing," and my response when someone says "write me a thing" is to write a thing. This book exists because Irene Gallo designed it with love and care and attention to detail that takes my breath away.

It's so beautiful. It's something that will exist in libraries and on bookshelves forever. A hundred years from now, someone will still own this book. They will have this beautiful thing. That is just...it's amazing.

I feel like this is some of my best work. It's short and it's elegant and it's important in a way that's hard for me to fully articulate. It's about teenagers and trauma and magical doors and the things we are and the things our parents want us to be, and the things that we become.

If you already have your copy, thank you so very, very much. Thank you for helping me to get this book out into the world, thank you for helping me to convince Tor.com that I'm a good bet, and thank you for letting this story live. Stories need to be read to be real.

If you don't have your copy yet, that's absolutely okay. The world is big and has many things in it. If you were thinking of buying one, signed copies can be purchased now from Borderlands Books and The Booksmith, both in San Francisco (both do mail orders). I will also be signing copies for the University Bookstore in Seattle this coming weekend at Emerald City Comic Con.

Thank you all again, so, so much.

This will also serve as your discussion post.

Now I know what I'm going to do today. Off to buy book.
Yay!
My pre-ordered copy is on its way. This means we'll have two. I might give one away. Or I might just want a backup.

The book's narrative structure is so lovely and it's so much bigger than its size.

P.
Thank you, so much.
... for Amazon to dispatch it, then at least a couple of weeks for it to get across the pond. :(

I'm looking forward to this one even more than usual!
I hope it will be worth the wait.

I should have pre-ordered this. I really should have, considering how excited I've been for this to come out.

I'm hoping my local Barnes & Noble will have it on the shelves tonight. If not, I'll order it online straightaway.
Good luck!

I bought the ebook, and thus got it immediately! Oh, it's lovely. I finished it and immediately wanted to start reading it again (and would have, if not for other commitments).
Oh, yay.
my parents pre-ordered me a copy for my birthday, but it's not due for ages (because i live in the UK) and i am So Impatient It Is Getting Silly :)
Aw.
I bought the ebook and just finished it an hour ago, and will be ordering the book shortly.

You are right; it's perfect, and it cracks open my heart in all the right ways. (I adore Jack. Do you know that I adore Jack? And Eleanor. And Nancy. And everyone. Just everyone.)

Stories and other worlds that we made with our hearts while gaming online and otherwise saved me in my teens and twenties, and, truthfully, keep me going now. Thank you for this.

I am hoping we will get to go back here again, that this door is not a once in a lifetime moment. But if it is, you have made it the best moment.

Thank you again for writing this.

You are so very, very welcome.
I'm halfway through and I've been really struck by how well you write about outsiders, and finding your own tribe. Loving every word.
Thank you.
I preordered this book in August, started reading this morning, and had to get a paper copy at lunch just so I could hold it very, very tightly. This is the book I wished I'd had at fourteen. Thank you.
And I at age six. I think my childhood would have been far less lonely than it was.

This is going to be a "reread when I need perspective" story. It was lovely and loving and haunting and more adjectives than my post-molar extraction brain can cope with. I'm glad I didn't listen to it during my dental work because I wouldn't have been able to concentrate and this book deserved the concentration.
Thank you so much.
I bought it.
I read it.
Dammit, Seanan.
This book exists.
Now we need more.
More will happen.

Congrats!! Mine is coming.
Yay!
I'm halfway through and wishing I didn't have to work tomorrow.
Best praise. :)
My first reaction upon finishing was a deep sigh of happiness. Then I was instantly sad, because there isn't a book two yet. I want to beg for a book two. I want to learn more about doorways.
That does not happen in the second book in this setting.
This book exists because you are an incredible, amazing and beautiful person. It resonated with me so very deeply and, I'll admit, scratched at some wounds that will never really heal. At the same time it made me feel so wonderful. I laughed, I cried, I cringed, and at the end, my heart danced through that doorway. Thank you so much, Seanan.
You are so very welcome.
and my first deed of the day was to order it (it's 8.21am here right now)
now let's see how long that online shop has to realize it's not *to be released sometime in April* but that it's out already. hah!
so much looking forward to reading this!!!
Yay!
I finished it last night, and it was wonderful. *^^*
Thank you!

There are no interior illustrations, in any edition of the book. What you've seen are the promotional postcards Tor.com designed; they were not included with the hardcover, either.

I may get there someday, but probably not for quite some time.
I don't use highlighter in ebooks.

There is a highlighted phrase in this book now. It's the one about silences.

I love this story. I'm so happy you told it to us.

I would love to read more in this world if it ever comes and knocks
There will be more. :)
I finished the whole thing in one sitting and it was amazing!
Thank you!
I have been pushing this book into people's hands from the word "go". It seems to be universally adored, which doesn't surprise me in the least.

Happy book day and then some! <3
I think it's a book a lot of us have been waiting for since...a very long time ago.

This was such an interesting read and I do wish for more in these worlds. The different worlds, the different characters and how they fit and not fit into their worlds. I love how unique each one was and the voices are so very distinct. Plus... you had mentioned that Nancy is asexual. You pointed out the difference between asexual and aromantic asexual and this made my heart soar. I'm both, but not everyone is and the fact that you made a point of it--

I adore Jack, in all her morbidness. I love Kade and his broken dreams, of rainbows and sugar and the dangers that lurk all within everyone. Of little bits here and there going "this is what happened here, this was the doorway there" and it's all so sad and poignant and so lovely.
Thank you, so much.

Nancy matters so much to me. I just want to protect her forever.
Oh my goodness I loved this book so very, very much. I finished reading it yesterday, and turned right around and started reading it again this morning. I love the complete empathy for all the characters, the way you find beauty in all the different worlds, the stillness, the nonsense, the representation. Thank you for making this book exist in the world.
You are so incredibly welcome.
This was the first hardback I bought, in a financially strapped year. It was totally worth it. It was... not the book I expected it to be, quite, from having read the sample chapters, but perhaps even better for that. It was a book I have needed for a long time.
Thank you for reading. <3
