Sometimes the mice sing...bad songs.

It's time for some free fiction, and for checking in on Verity and Dominic as they continue their trip from New York to Oregon, with plenty of stops along the way. They've weathered their time at the Carmichael Hotel with no fatalities. So where to next?

Why, back to Buckley Township, Michigan.

No tour of the history of the American Price family would be complete without a stop in Buckley. That's where Enid and Alexander settled down; where Jonathan brought home the Fabulous Fran, Star of New Mexico; where Alice Healy met Thomas Price. That's where it began.

It isn't where it ended.

You can download the new story now from the InCryptid short fiction page. Please download and save to read locally, rather than trying to read on my poor server.

This also serves as your discussion post.

We get to find out how a member of the most recent generation feels about Buckley Township and it's going to be awesome! Or, you know, involve almost-dead kids and people getting pissed at Verity for saving said kids, and also murder and lingering on the tragedy that befell Alice and Thomas, which all comes out to about the same thing!

"Do not run across your face in the small hours of the night, no, not even if we are afraid of the sounds in the walls and hoping that our claws will wake you."

That...is a very good rule. GAHH. The Aeslin are lucky they're so adorable. Even if they do spring songs about genitalia on their gods (and priestesses?)

And I guess "the ghost in the old Parrish Price place" is either going to come back to haunt (ha!) the family later, or it's a story that's cropped up. Or both. 'Both' seems probable.

Dominic's first statement upon getting a noseful of pollen makes me wonder: has he had to chase a bogeyman around Euro Disney? Also, the line about how "It can be exhausting, learning not to listen to the things that don't apply to you." makes me wonder how much he's been applying that lesson to being called "the Covenant boyfriend" when he's cut ties with them.

Aaaaaand just so you know, I literally squeaked and danced a bit when Dominic proposed. Awww!

Thank you so much for this excellent story!
This was wonderful! Thank you!! I'm glad the Healy house is still there, from hints dropped I had visions of it being a blackened ruin, strewn with salt or something. (Is it the same couch, btw?)

Though I am blaming you entirely for the fact that I spent all night coming up with rhymes for scrotum, depending on how you were singing, and what sort of emphasis you put on the words.

P.S. I honestly don't know if this is appropriate, and if it is not, I shall grovel and beg your forgiveness. But does this mean there is a chance that some day you will tell the tale of what happened in Buckley when the Covenant came to visit?

P.P.S. I've been imagining the mice singing the Man-bits Madrigal in squillo to the tune of Carnival Glass.
Yay!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I read this while waiting in line for customs at LAX and then had to explain to the nice lady pushing my mobility assistance chair ( me + airplanes = joints don't like to work) exactly why I was laughing so hard I was barely staying in the chair. Dominic was utterly hilarious while high, and I can just imagine the look on Verity's face when she saw the clearing full of bromeliads. Thank you!
This was pitch perfect. Thank you. :)
Hee! omg Dominic high as a kite <3
I very much liked the story. Thanks so much for posting it. Looking forward to _Chaos Choreography_.
YAY new fiction!
I don't understand how you can post so much free fic, to your cats eat the un-edited printouts so you can save on cat food?

But thank you! Thanks you very much!
Aww, they're such a ...well, not really cute, but still somehow adorable couple.

What are the chances we'll get the lyrics to the mices' song?
Thank you. This is the first thing I've ever read that I want to sit my wife down and read to her. It was so clever and fun and sweet and bitter. Thank you for this.
From what I remember, Alexander and Enid Healy (not sure about Jonathan) spent a little bit of time in Pennsylvania before moving to Buckley after a Covenant agent visited. How long did they stay there? The text in this story makes it seem as though they came straight to Michigan from England.
I just remember being thrilled that they had considered PA as a place to settle.
Thank you for this story.

I loved seeing how, Dominic, once committed, is committed, but he still understands why Verity is concerned about their relationship.

It was interesting, the dialogue about [Spoiler (click to open)]"It's adorable how you apply [conservation before extermination] to things that want to eat you alive" and how he sees the line between "don't kill everything not human" and "it's trying to kill people, kill it", especially given what Basil had to tell Alex in Pocket Apocalypse.
If Thomas is alive, and if Alice finds him, it'll be interesting to see how he and Dominic and the Thirty-sixers hit it off.

The Healys and the Prices have been existing in a sort of vacuum consisting of family, and Cryptids who were aware of their Covenant past and trying to be able to coexist with them. As the family grows with new perspectives, I wonder how their "conservation before extermination" philosophy will change.
Verity and Alex both clearly know there's a line, given their exploits in the books, but I feel they put that line in a different place than Enid, Alexander, or Fran would.
[Spoiler (click to open)]You mentioned the circus in this story, which answered a lot of questions I had about where Kevin and Jane were while Alice hunted for Thomas. Were some of the changes in where the generations draw this line due to this upbringing, rather than in a strictly Healy/Price house?
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you very much for this delightful story! Also, thank you for rocking ConDFW!
I lay awake trying to compose the song the mice sang. Fortunately, I didn't write any of it down. But I feel I may have to come back to this project...

Well, shoot...

Now I kinda want to cultivate swamp bromeliads and make drugs out of them.
I only just read this (caught up just in time for Chaos Choreography!), and it was wonderful. *^^* Thank you for it.
