Verity Price, not a subtle rabbit.

It's time for some free fiction, and for checking in on Verity and Dominic as they continue their trip from New York to Oregon, with plenty of stops along the way. They've weathered their meeting with Rose Marshall remarkably well. So where to next?

The Carmichael Hotel, of course.

"Snake in the Glass" takes us back to Chicago, where Dominic is going to continue meeting the family...whether he likes it or not. Let's just hope Verity can keep him from getting himself into too much trouble.

You can download the new story now from the InCryptid short fiction page. There is currently a problem with the cover graphic on the page: it is smaller than the others. I am aware, and am working to get it fixed, but didn't want to make you wait any longer over something so (relatively) trivial. (ETA: Fixed.)

Big thanks to Will, for emergency last-second eBook conversion, and to Tara, for getting me the replacement cover so quickly.

This also serves as your discussion post.

So much free fiction!!!!! Velveteen, Indexing, and now Verity?? Best end of the year present ever!! Thank you times infinity!
*quiet squees for the gift of more short fiction!*
What a fabulous story. Returning to the Carmichael was so emotional for me. I fell hard for Frances, and the memories this invoked almost got me crying. There is so much of her in Verity.

I love these short stories every bit as much as the novels. You can fully enjoy the main story without reading them, but they add so much to the overall narrative. If I hadn't read The Ghosts of Bourbon Street, I probably wouldn't have read Sparrow Hill Road yet, but I had to know more about Rose after that. (Of course now I want more of Rose, but no pressure :)) Seeing the relationship between Verity and Dominic grow is so rewarding, and makes me want March to get here even sooner. Plus, of course, Alice!

Thank you for this wonderful gift.

Oh, bless. :)
You are so generous to us. Thank you.
Yay, thank you! Just read the Velveteen ebooks & loved them!
eee! Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Thank you, that was just what I needed today.

When Dominic spoke about Sarah, and how she'd influenced his ideas of the world, I teared up. What a tribute to her, and how much he's grown.
Thank you so much! I thought this would be about Alice and Thomas. I was so pleased to see that it was about Verity and Dominic! And there's DeLuca backstory! And more Kalakos' and we meet Lea! I have to go reread "We Both Go down Together" as I don't think Lea is the sort of Cryptid that they are... Oceanid is not Finfolk type mermaid, (so no tri-stage therioanthropy) but one of the other dozen types- got it.

This was awesome! Thank you for letting us see more of the Carmichael and how openly curious and sharing everyone is in that mixed social setting. It was great to see how much Dominic has been stretching and I love the bit he said about Sarah, and the hint at how much was going on when Verity was 'offstage'. The snippet of a scene was so clear and I hope he was good about his answer to her.

If for some bizarre reason, you need to move afield from the Prices, a Carmichael take on Fawlty Towers or Eloise would also sell, I'm just saying.
Oh, and the cover art on this one is also beautiful. Whoever does these is extraordinarily gifted. Are they different people or the same person?

Just wanted to say how very, very grateful I am for all the free stories you put up on your website. I am not always the most financially solvent of people, and being able to read something that you have done at your own expense just to make us happy always makes my day. So thank you so much for taking the time to do that. Yet another reason your books are always on my auto-buy list.
Thank you! That was very sweet. I love Dominic's explanation that Sarah made him reconsider everything. Also, thank you for unintentionally answering my wish to read more about Sarah, in a roundabout way.
Seconding this. More Sarah is always good and I loved that Dominic emphasised that she was the one who made him rethink, not Verity.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Dominic turned and frowned at me. Then he shook his head. "Is there anything your family will not marry?"
"I dunno," I said. "I'm banging a guy from the Covenant. I think it shows that we're pretty openminded."

Omg, I am so delighted.
That was funny and cute and had a super sweet ending... much less heart-wrenching but no less good than the recent sadness with Fran. Thanks much for writing and posting and being generally awesome.
Thank you. This is wonderful!
So Greek gorgons have very similar mating rituals to Greek humans. Makes perfect sense, actually :-)

I want to know more about Aunt Lea...

I'm pondering how, if he married in and took the Kalakos family name, is Angelo the dominant in the family. We already know from Half-Off Ragnarok that females can be leaders in the Gorgon culture. I wonder if it is a function of the Lesser Gorgons that males are the head of the family.

Awww, that was really sweet. Dominic's comments about Sarah, omg. <3 I love how much he's grown.

And I love Lea. :D
Thank you!! Lovely way to finish off 2015.
Thank you! Once again, a surprise short story from you has greatly cheered up a day that really needed something new and happy.
(stream-of-consciousness observations)

Hmm. Clearly, this is the first time Aeslin Mice have been to the Carmichael. This will probably become an Important Event in their history.

Dominic de Luca: further proof that sometimes wisdom comes from getting it right, and sometimes wisdom comes from watching other people get it wrong.

I get the impression that being told, "Come. Sit down. There's plenty." carries much more meaning in gorgon society than just an invitation to dinner.

Fantastic, as usual.
This may have been the first time for these mice, but others have come before them. Vasia certainly wasn't surprised by them:

"Speaking of which..." Vasia gave my duffle a meaningful look. "Am I correct in assuming the second room you booked is for your usual rodent companions, and the customary precautions should be taken?"
