INDEXING: REFLECTIONS episode #8: "Holly Tree."

The eighth episode of Indexing: Reflections is available today! This is your talkpost and discussion zone. There will be spoilers in the comments here. As always on talkposts, I have partial comment amnesty, and will not be responding to everything.

"Holly Tree" is important. I've been keeping mum about a lot of things while I waited for us to get here. Oh, Amity...

One of the big things I've had to keep my mouth shut on is Sloane's tale type. Several people have noticed that she's categorized wrong; "The Cruel Sister" has nothing to do with Cinderella, or with the specific trappings of Sloane's tale. Sloane's actual tale type is unknown, because sometimes, trying to force things into a structure is a good way to wind up getting them incorrect; the ATI MB thinks they know what they have, because someone chose a label, and someone else put that label on a file.

They have no idea.

Sloane's AT Index type...

I know it's given as a 315, but looking at the hint, and a little looking a 480 might make sense.

She was given a reward, by the man (prince?) with bracelets. Maybe better phrased in the world of fairly tales:

She choose her reward: Live or die? She chose to live.

Good point, though a key point of that story set is the other half, is the idea that the other sister was then cruel...

Unfortunately, I'm not as familiar with "The Tale of the Kind and Unkind Girls" as I could be. I ended up down a research rabbit hole when I found it.

The early Story seemed to be fairly fluid and adaptable from from other statements in previous parts of Indexing. It was the act of Indexing which started to make the tales stronger and less "flexible".

There were three sisters, and if two could be cruel to a third, it (the Story) could go ahead and work with the proto-tales which weren't "Indexed" yet. Amity fighting the Story to be good allowed it to shift to another close type. (just my interpretation)

The type 315 was an easy assignment. Probably, like giving up her name, she gave up her tale type, too. (me reading into authors intent is dangerous waters and prone to errors. YMMV)
