INDEXING: REFLECTIONS episode #8: "Holly Tree."

The eighth episode of Indexing: Reflections is available today! This is your talkpost and discussion zone. There will be spoilers in the comments here. As always on talkposts, I have partial comment amnesty, and will not be responding to everything.

"Holly Tree" is important. I've been keeping mum about a lot of things while I waited for us to get here. Oh, Amity...

One of the big things I've had to keep my mouth shut on is Sloane's tale type. Several people have noticed that she's categorized wrong; "The Cruel Sister" has nothing to do with Cinderella, or with the specific trappings of Sloane's tale. Sloane's actual tale type is unknown, because sometimes, trying to force things into a structure is a good way to wind up getting them incorrect; the ATI MB thinks they know what they have, because someone chose a label, and someone else put that label on a file.

They have no idea.

Once upon a time...

Is it very wrong of me to love your powerful, grouchy, and threatening violence female characters so much?

Squeee! Excited! Opening Kindle Reader right nowwwwww.

If loving cranky violent people who threaten carnage is wrong, then I don't wanna be right.
Let's face it, I wish I could be someone like that, but (a) I'm about as fierce looking as your average cute wittle mousie, and sound similarly, and (b) boring-ass shitty regular life is not cool with women acting like that.

I'm just so sad for Sloane. I've read it twice and I'm still so sad for Sloane. She has to be so incredibly lonely. And losing Henry... Oy. Losing someone who understood you... And Sloane was so much older than I realized. To have lived with this for centuries. It's hard to wrap one's head around it.

I have grave concerns about what ATI has done in forcing round pegs into square holes with their story type assignments. It seems likely to expand opportunities for stories to take on a life of their own rather than keep them under control.

And Jen, boring ass shitty life is sadly often not cool with women in so many ways, big and small. I think the reason we love The Ludaeg and Sloane is that they get to be powerful, self-reliant and fearless women when our real world would say such women have something very wrong with them and punish them for it.
Yes, that sums it up exactly.

God, I hate reality so bad. It seems like in real life, you just can't be awesome.
