Nobody knows how the story will bend: even a princess can meet a bad end.

Tomorrow.

Indexing was almost a whim. 47 North, Amazon's publishing arm, contacted me and asked if I had anything that I felt would work well as part of the new Amazon Serials Program. I had a short story called "Indexing," set in a world I very much wanted to explore further. I sent them that, along with a pitch for a full season. They took it, and for twelve episodes--six glorious months--I lived in a vision of twisted fairy tales and dangerous ever afters. We met Henry, and Sloane, and Jeff, and Andy. We faced down a power-hungry Mother Goose, and more princesses than you can shake a stick at. And when it was done, it was done, and I walked away content.

Until people said they wanted to know more. Until 47 North said they wanted to know more. (I write plenty for free, but the Velveteen and InCryptid short fiction universes pretty much fill the "unpaid work" slot, so I did need a publisher to show interest.)

Until I started really thinking about the princesses.

Indexing: Reflections begins tomorrow. Like the original Indexing, it is twelve episodes long, releasing every other week until it is complete. Because Amazon serials are available only in the US, Indexing: Reflections is only available in the US until it is complete; the finished ebook and collected print edition will both be available globally.

If you enjoyed the first volume, I think this one is going to make you really happy. Pre-order now to get episode one at midnight, and join the party already in process. (If you haven't read Indexing yet, I strongly recommend it.)

Whee!

Sooo excited! Wow I can't believe it's been two years since the last serial......I was in such a different place then (literally and figuratively) I can't wait to get back into that universe and see Sloane again ^_^
Sloane makes me so happy. (Well, mostly.)
Me, too.
My squee just scared the cat.
If I weren't in a public library, I'd be squeeing so hard right now.
I will try and wait patiently until it is available in Europe.
Ditto .au

Finally!

(Not a complaint, just a jumping-up-and-down because I was thinking this morning, "Did I miss an announcement? I hope I didn't miss an announcement. I should go search for the series today." And here it is!)
Hee yay.
SO excited! I just finished rereading the first book. *^^*
I'm stoked! I've been pre-ordered since Amazon first announced it. Ready for more Henry and Sloane!
Rockin'.
I have so much excite! I loved Indexing and am really excited for MOAR INDEXING! Dreams can come true!
They can!
I'm extremely looking forward to the globally-available full-version in half a year or so! :-)
Awesome, thank you.
Already preordered. I'm really looking forward to this!
Thank you!
Yesyesyes.

Oooh. I loved Indexing #1 and was hoping there'd be a second! I didn't actually get around to it (I'd bought it, but it was in my TBR) until I saw you on the Q&A panel at Norwescon a couple years ago talking about the Aarne-Thompson tale type index, which was fascinating, and your story about snagging it out from under a friend was hilarious. :) So I got home from the con and started reading and absolutely adored it. I have a Thing for fairy tales and retellings. I've got no idea how many I've read at this point, but it's a loooot. Indexing #1 made it into my top 5.

So, I have a possibly more practical question. I have another Thing; I get really hooked on world settings and don't want to leave, so I tend to read the first book in a series and if I like it, buy the books as they come out to support the author (first week if I can afford it at the time, because Lists), wait until I have a certain number of books, and then read them (particularly with an open-ended series; if it's a trilogy, like Newsflesh, I'll often buy the first one, second at release, then start reading right around when the third is set to come out so I can buy it and keep reading... my ex might have a Story about me being stuck in bed for about four days straight reading the trilogy just as Blackout came out *whistles*).

Thing is, I have absolutely no idea how this works with Amazon Serials. Is it better for you if they're bought as they come out every other week, or does it not matter? I think the serials show up as separate "books" on my Kindle (if anyone can confirm or correct me, it'd be appreciated; most of the serials I've ended up buying in chunks have been indie published, and I don't know if it might be different for Amazon 47North), so it's less messy for my interface to wait and buy the "omnibus", especially since I won't read it until then anyway. But! If it's something that does make a difference for you on the author side, then fuck the interface, I'd rather do something to support one of my favorite authors. :)

-redacted- (Personal TY to Seanan for something, added here so as to not clutter e-mail.)
This one is going to add chapters into the original story every time. So, all one document.

I even forgot I pre-ordered! It's like a little gift sitting on the web site.
I do not have words for how much Indexing meant/ means to me (and I was never in the slightest interested in Snow White before this-- I'm a Beauty and the Beast girl through and through). Something about the tale of tales and the way all the versions of a story meet together under the skin of things... I love it. I am SO SO SO happy and scared and all full of feelings about this. (I preordered forever ago.) Thank you so much for writing more!
You are so welcome.
I loved _Indexing_ so this makes me very happy.
I'm not supposed to actually look forward to the now familiar wee hours insomnia. But I'm planning to accidentally leave my kindle's wifi on tonight when I go to bed. Just in case. :-)

Happy Indexing Eve!
Heeee.
So much squee!!
So glad they're issuing a print edition again! Yay!
Yes, always.
Got it, read it, loved it! When Henry was talking about Gerry ... you made me cry, it was so moving. Thanks so much; now all I have to do is hold out for the next two weeks!
Aw, thanks.
So looking forward to this! Have to wait (im)patiently for the print version :)
I get that.
Yes, its finally here! I pre-ordered it from Amazon as soon as I noticed there was a second part coming out. I haven't started to read it yet, through. I'm trying to savor it for as long as I can, as I wait for Chimera to come out. Also, I hope that Don't Taunt The Octopus isn't' the final Newsflesh story you write. I am a rabid fan of all of your work, but the Newsflesh series is my absolute favorite. Although the Parasitology books are awesome, too. 😁
Thank you for reading!
'Once upon a fuck me running' is my new favorite phrase :)
I'm still fond of "What the crystal candy fuck?" from Velveteen
