Social networking makes me tired.

Well, I'm over on Facebook now, for a variety of reasons, not least of which was -- let's be honest here -- I have a first novel coming out before too terribly much longer*, and it's a good idea to find anybody who might know me but not read this journal if I want them to be aware of that fact. In the current economy, skipping anything that increases potential readership is a little bit silly. Which doesn't mean I'm going to be standing naked on a highway overpass with a big sign reading 'BUY MY BOOK SO I CAN BUY SOME PANTS,' but when I hear about another small bookstore going under, well...the temptation is there.

So anyway, you can look me up as 'Seanan McGuire,' and get live pithy one-liners about the fact that I write a lot, watch a lot of television, and cook an awesome turkey. Thus far, mostly the former, the latter, and a lot of mentions of a) being too sick to die, and b) playing Rock Band 2. Did I mention that it was my Martian death flu that made Facebook look appealing? 'Cause yeah.

I have already found or been found by several people from high school, which I find somewhat daunting. But one of them may well be My Favorite Teacher Ever, so that's pretty awesome (I'm waiting for him to confirm or deny). It really is a fascinating networking model, one which honestly assumes that you'd love to get back in touch with your best friend from first grade. (I would. Natasha, call me.)

It's all very odd around here. And I have no DDP in the damn house at all.

(*Sadly, 'not terribly much longer' isn't a clever way of saying that I have a release date, 'cause I don't. It's a clever way of saying 'I had six hours of sleep, and am thus talking myself in pretty circles.' Well. Typing myself in pretty circles, anyway.)

These networks can devour sooooooo much time.

(On occasion it's actually worth it. Been finding some long-lost friends.)
Yeah, I can definitely see where they would. On the other hand, it gives me something to smack when I stall out on the current chapter (currently happening every page and a half).
It's the apps that are really addicting.

I found a Scrabble app, that sadly, does not allow one to play scrabble. But it does a 5 by 5 random letter - find a word game. I never knew how fast you could go through an hour in 3 minute blocks before.

And then are are "rpgs" and fish breeding and so forth.
I got suckered into the vampire app. I actually like it. Every few hours, I go kill things as my little vampire, and am rewarded with blood and rats (I have, like, 110 'Command Rat Swarms' from killing were-rats in the sewer). It's soothing.

The hard thing is suckering more people into my clan, so I can get access to bigger minions.
Send me a invite, I will be a minion. I bet I'm the only tikiera you have friended on facebook, so should be easy to find.

Hooray!
Typing yourself is circles is likely a direct result of your blood caffeine level dropping too low. ;-) Facebook is a hoot - I've found or been found by people I haven't seen in years - good for the most part haha. It can become a time sink if you let it, but otherwise it an easier-than-email way to check in with/update people. I just sent you a friend request btw. My daughter insisted I get a MySpace page. I set one up but can't be buggered to mess with it. It's too fiddly and the pages take forever to load.
I have a presence on pretty much every social networking site that I can find. I also don't fiddle very much with them (no time, and actually no inclination). I consider it an inexpensive (free, just invest a couple of minutes a week) way to raise awareness of my work.
Basically, yeah.
You're all friended back. Whee-ha!
I sent you a friend request and friend-suggested you to some bookstores on my friends list.
Excellent, and thank you!
You might want to start a "group" or a "page" for your novel, BTW.
If I wait a little bit, by the time my novel's out, several of the short stories I've sold will also be out, and I can just do an author page.
Facebook won't let me in because they don't believe my name!

*is amused*
...okay, that's funny.
I sent you a friend request :)
I friended you!
If you stood on a highway naked with a sign telling me to buy your book so you can buy pants ...

... I don't know. I think I might not buy it, then.
I would be sad. And have no pants.
