New book dropping Tuesday; have some reviews.

The Winter Long comes out on Tuesday, to my terror and delight, and the early reviews are beginning to filter in.

Whatchamacallit reviews has posted a review of The Winter Long, and says, "The first thing I have to say about Seanan McGuire is that her October Daye series gets better with each book. While I've liked each book, I've found that with each successive book in the series the overall series and each book got better, to the point that now when a new book in the series comes out I have to immediately go buy a copy and often finish it that day."

Also: "McGuire has done something I've seen only a precious few other authors do successfully, turn their entire world upside down. That's what The Winter Long is, it's a complete reversal from everything readers and fans of the series have known from the first book in the series. This is the turning point and while McGuire has built upon changes created from previous books in the series, she executed a perfect shift for the others leaving readers utterly unable to control their collective jaws from dropping."

Ta-da!

My Bookish Ways has posted a review of The Winter Long, and says, "Seanan McGuire mentions in her acknowledgements that this is the book that all others led up to, that everything she's done until now was for the sake of getting here. Indeed. What she manages to do is make it very clear how intricate Toby's story is, and the richness of Toby's world is a thing of genius. And don't worry, while The Winter Long clears up a TON of stuff, it’s made clear that Toby's story is far from over. This is a good thing. The Winter Long is a testament to McGuire's ability to take so many threads and pull them together into a harrowing, and believable tapestry, and it's all Toby’s own. While there's plenty of action, this is one of the most introspective books in the bunch, and of course, another great book in the Toby-verse."

Now that the reviews are out of the way, I have two requests. I promise they're small.

The first is to please remember how stressful and upsetting I find it when people put books out for sale early. The Winter Long comes out on Tuesday. While you are absolutely welcome to buy it if you find it before then, and may not have a choice (some retailers ship early), I am begging you, please don't tell me. My chances of making the New York Times list, which is still a big deal in finding out whether a series will continue, ride on that first Tuesday to Tuesday window. So if you can refrain from buying until the book is officially out, please do, and if you can't, please, for the love of the Great Pumpkin, don't tell me you got the book early.

The second is to please wait until I open the official discussion post before you begin your book discussion. I'll be in Scotland at the time, so it should be open very early indeed on the 2nd. But just in case something goes wrong, please don't start discussing here, or elsewhere on this blog. Spoilers are a big, big thing with this particular book.

It's almost here!

I absolutely cannot wait, but Amazon in the UK aren't shipping it out until the end of September - WOES! It's times like this that I can (reluctantly) see the appeal of the Kindle...but all the same, a three-and-a-bit week wait for my new Shiny? I am sad...
That is sad, and I am sorry. :(

If you contact Forbidden Planet in London, they may be able to beat that time, and also allow you to support a (sort of) local store?

I'm so looking forward to reading this! Also, welcome to Scotland, when you get here :)
I am in Scotland!

Do pre-orders count well for the NYT list? Or digital orders? Or is it just physical copies sold in the first week after publication? (Either way, reminding my girlfriend to pick a copy up at B&N on the way home fromw work Tuesday)
IIRC, pre-orders count as being sold in the first week. (I pre-ordered also, knowing that the book would pop up on my e-reader on the designated Day. Perhaps it will be an anticipated treat, or perhaps a glorious surprise, but it's purchase does not depend on me remembering on the proper day.)

You've probably answered this many times before, but would a kindle pre-order affect that Tuesday-Tuesday window at all?

Very much looking forward to seeing Toby again!
It would be counted against that window, yeah.
I'm looking forward to it! Now back to my series reread so I'll be ready for the new one soon. :)
Hooray!

I wondered why books come out on Tuesdays!

My copy is on its way. I just have to get to it before my other half. :)
Shelving logistics for physical bookstores, from what I understand. :-)

How about preorders? Especially ebook preorders?
I can *try* to remember to hit buy on tuesday, but it would be *easier* to hit "preorder" today. I assume preorder today is better than "crap, where did that week go, is it under the couch somewhere?" and not actually buying til, say, next wednesday?
They do count, I believe.
I pre-ordered it from Amazon when it first became available (and I just happened to have earned a $20 Amazon certificate the usual way, by taking surveys). Amazon now tells me that it will be here sometime between Fri 5 Sep and Tuesday 9 Sep... which actually means anywhere from Tue 3 Sep to Sat 13 Sep. I do hope it's early rather than late! It's been way too long since my last Toby fix!
Excellent.
YAY NEW TOBY!

Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere, but will this book be released in audio format, and if so, have you been given a release date?
I have no information regarding the eventual audio book release.

Is there any chance of an audiobook?

I've hunted around all the usual suspects (audible/amazon etc) but I can not find any information.

I have no information regarding the eventual audio book release.

Can't wait to read it. You are one of the writers I am able to read your books over and over again and not get tired of it. I enjoyed all your books and writing style in each series you have written.
Eeeeee yay!
I need to travel on Thursday. I want to save this until I am travelling, because I do so poorly and this will be awesome and helpful.

Let's face it though, I'll be up all night Tuesday, huh?
Yay!
I'm heading to B&N Tuesday morning. I am so looking forward to this book!
Woot!
The part about turning the entire world upside-down makes me look forward to Tuesday even more than I already was. With many authors, I'd be dubious, but I have no doubt that you'll pull it off with style and grace. The times you've turned my perception of a story on end in other books have been moments I treasure. About halfway through Blackout comes to mind in particular - I'm sure you can guess what part. :). So yeah, I'm looking forward to this ride.
Oh my gosh, I'm so excited! :D Here's hoping you grace the New York Times list with style!
I hope so!
Looking forward to it!
I am glad.
I know never to judge a book by its cover, but I am SO IN LOVE with this cover.
And the Toby this artist has drawn still looks like one of my cousins, so that makes me happier.
This is probably my favorite cover so far.
I have theories about Toby and I want this book like burning. *counting down the hours*

Happy Book Day tomorrow! May the sales and the NYT list be ever in your favor! :D
Thank you!
I am a bit freaked out. I 'pre-ordered'. That counts, correct? And if you're answering that question, how about another? Any idea if/when an audiobook will be released? I like to add Kindle/audiobook versions so I can read or listen anywhere.
Pre-orders absolutely count.

As I have said repeatedly in this comment thread, I have absolutely no information regarding the audiobook. I'm sorry if that sounds snappish, but the question is starting to really, really stress me out.
I am just so mindlessly happy that this will not be the last book in the series!
Never was!
Weird. My local Hastings told me it's been out for a week already when I asked today-but they didn't already have it. So I ordered it. :)

(Now I just need to read the rest of the series. I started with Feed, then Parasite, most of incryptid, just now October Daye...)
Your local Hastings was wrong wrong wrong stressfully wrong. o.O
It's so thoughtful of you to always release a new book around my birthday. Makes it real easy for Solomon to know what to buy for me.
And yes, he gave me the book this morning. :-) Yay! Might have to wait 'til the weekend to read it, though, b/c of that needing-to-wake-up-for-work thing...

OH! So excited! As with almost every other bookday, I must needs work (that's how we buys the books, precioussss!) knowing that the book is waiting, waiting patiently on my kindle for me to get home. :-)
