Fifty days until the winter starts...and it's gonna be a long one.

Fifty days. That's how long we have before The Winter Long will be on bookstore shelves (US on-sale date is September 2nd). Book eight. We made it to book eight. I remember when I was just caught in a loop, rewriting books one through four over and over again, making grandiose plans for book five, but never quite managing to break free and do anything new. Now I'm getting ready to start on book ten, and the path is very clear ahead of me.

Fifty days and five years: that's the distance between Rosemary and Rue and The Winter Long. At an average of 350 pages a book (average; please don't comment to say "but this one was only 338..."), that's almost 3,000 pages of Toby, with more to come. Honestly, I'm amazed she's lived this long, given everything that I've put her through. She's too stubborn to die and too fun to kill, which is probably the only thing that's saved her.

Fifty days and you get to find out everything I haven't been saying since book one. This is the volume where a lot of chickens come home to roost: it's always been planned as the game-changer for act one of the series. I think I managed to accomplish that. Early review copies are out in the world, and thus far there have been no spoilers, for which I am very grateful. I really like it when people can discover what I've done for themselves.

Fifty days. I'll be somewhere in Europe when this book drops (probably in Edinburgh, with Amal, hiding under whatever piece of furniture I can wedge myself beneath), twitchy and waiting for the reviews to come in, yet terrified of reading them. I wish I could be here to do my normal release day funtimes. I'm glad I'll be far away. Somehow, both emotions are succeeding in existing at the same time.

Fifty days. That's so long.

Fifty days. That isn't long at all.

Like any period of time, it is a long time to wait and a short time to live.
(I'm fine anyway; I'm still a full book behind, hoarder/slow reader that I am.)
Just buy 'em on release week if you possibly can. ;)
Eeeeee!

I am so looking forward to this, and I cannot wait to see all those chickens roosting :) I'm also happy to hear that we're still in Act One, because that means there will be a lot more Toby to come!
If people keep buying the books and my publisher keeps printing them!

Winter Is Coming.

......I'll just sit in the corner, shall I?

(Well, SOMEBODY had to make that joke!)
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Glee, says I.
*stares, muffles screams of joy and waits in breathless anticipation.*
Yay!
Duly marked on my calendar! Yay!
GLEE.

I pre-ordered The Winter Long as soon as Amazon let me. Now, I buy a lot of stuff online, so I've taken to keeping a chart of what's scheduled to be delivered when; often the date of delivery is still approximate until just before the items arrive. Right now I'm waiting for an order of summer-weight fat broad's pants, a 6-quart stewpot, and the DVD set of Firefly; all these things are listed at the top of my chart, to be removed once they've arrived. And then, at the bottom of the chart, it says:
The Winter LongFri Sep 5
I want that to be sooner - I want to read this book! (And now I hope that the chickens that come home to roost don't wind up trying to peck the Luidaeg to death... or worse...)
So many chickens.

Fifty days gives me enough time to re-read the previous 7.

And emotionally recover from 'Sparrow Hill Road.' Thanks. ;P
You're welcome!
Hurray! I pre-ordered it from Chapters yesterday, and will be starting my re-read of the rest of the series as soon as I'm done my current library book.

Also in the order: Sparrow Hill Road (better late than never), a gifting copy of the Newsflesh box set, and a cookbook on Asian Dumplings.

Entirely off-topic: the SF Squeecast makes a delightful soundtrack for lunchtime walking, but I think I might be scaring some of the passersby with my occasional outbursts.
Hooray!
*bounces in excitement*
Glee.
Very much looking forward to it! I expect that SD- will get it for me as a birthday present. :-)
Excellent plan.
You will not be allowed to hide under the sofa in Edinburgh!

There are bookstores who will need stock signing (I must introduce you to them) and there is coffee, beer, and good single malt whisky to be drunk. And I will be in town the whole time because I'll just have gotten back from much the same convention trip as you, only by road.

OK?
But but but I like the underside of sofas!

I shall very much enjoy hanging out with you when there's NOT a convention going on around us.
Fifty days for me to catch up, as I'm further behind on the Toby series than any of your other on-goings (except, I guess, Velveteen, which I haven't read at all yet). I own them all in paperback, just need to catch up.

I love game-changers for ongoing series. Looking forward to this.
Woo!
Hooray! ARRRRRRRGH! So close! So far! How can I possibly wait that long?! What to do until then? Hmm, maybe go place a second advance order. To give to... I don't know, I'll think of someone.
That is an excellent way to handle frustration.
"Too stubborn to die and too fun to kill" sounds like a great way to live. :) And chickens too!

It's been in my calendar since the day you announced the release date and about to be pre-ordered.

Now there's just the waiting...
Waiting is haaaaaaaaaard.
Fifty days and you get to find out everything I haven't been saying since book one.

Not everything. ;D
A lot!
All I can say about this book, from a legal, moral, philosophical, ethical, and logistical point is this:

Well played, Seanan. Well played.

I will now smile knowingly for the next fifty days or so.

Oh, and I totally have money down on Book Nine being a hardcover release.
Screw the hardcover release. Deluxe omnibus edition of all of Act One! With Bonus materials! Maps! Geneologies! Appendices! Put Tolkein to shame!

Can't wait! I'm all over that when it comes out.
Yay!
Already pre-ordered!

To paraphrase the Bard -

Fifty days will quickly steep themselves in night.
Fifty nights will quickly dream away the time.

:-)

Heeee.
"the game-changer for act one"

o.O

We're still in act ONE? OMG.

Incidentally, the time until that release date is forever, sayeth the lady who has a child due that day. I have lots of people already telling me "that's so soon!" NO IT IS NOT. Plus I don't get chocolate or cakes or anything until after the kid is born, thank you hormones. FOREVER, I tell you.
Not after this book, we're not!

OMG.

pardon while i run around and flail my arms like a crazy person.
Pardon granted.
So close? Yay! The very thought makes a birthday even better.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
We're looking forward to it! I should call and see if the local bookstore will take a pre-order this early. The electronic copy's already been ordered. :)
Awesome. <3

A new Toby Daye book. Yay! I guess I know what series I'd better start a reread of. This summer has been like that; several of my favorite authors have released book 9/13/whatever and I don't stand a chance of remembering the details without a full series reread. :)
I am always in favor of a reread.
I wait with breathless anticipation. Toby omnibuses (omnibi?) would be sweet.
That may happen someday, but not until the series is finished/has stopped really selling very well. So I am hopeful that it will be a long, long time.
