Skate for your life, and hide your knives.

Happy February! Have some free fiction.

You've had a glimpse of Antimony's time with the Slasher Chicks, but how did it start? Everyone has to strap on their skates for the first time sometime, because otherwise there'd be no one on the track at all. For Antimony Price, that first time came shortly after high school graduation, when she thought she had no other choices.

You know the result, since clearly she joins the team, but getting there is half the fun and more than half the battle. It's time to find out where it all started.

Let's jam.

You can download "Blocked" now from the InCryptid short fiction page. Since this story is chronologically the first starring Antimony, it should stand reasonably well on its own, providing you have any familiarity with the InCryptid setting. (If you don't, there's a lot of short fiction set earlier in the world continuity also posted on that page. Enjoy!)

This also serves as your discussion post.

Glee.
As a brand-new roller girl, I can't tell you how happy this made me...

I am so glad!
Roller Derby, not my scene, but I really enjoyed this. As usual, you are a master, or mistress, of creating engaging characters.
Yay!
Thank you!
Very welcome.
I love it, I'm really going to buy the anthology where Antimony, Elsie and Artie!!!!!
Where Antimony, Elsie, and Artie...what?
That's great! Thank you so much! I love to learn more about Antimony!

Hooray for more Antimony! I loved her in Bad Dream Girl.

Thank you for giving away these short stories, they're really appreciated and give a great extra understanding of the world's back story.

And will help to keep me going until Half-Off Ragnarok and Sparrow Hill Road drop through my letterbox. :)

Edit: And exactly the right length for my Tube ride home!
Hooray!
Thank you
Very welcome.
OK, McGuire. Mike SumNoyz here. Read the story. I could quibble with some of the details of derby, but I know reality doesn't always work to support good narrative. Only Antimony Price could get into derby without going through Fresh Meat training. Anybody else would be a danger to herself and the others on the track. But we both know that you get the important things about derby completely right, the people and the community. Next LA trip, if you can spare a Sunday, I'll talk to ACDG's media rep and we'll see if we can get you in to our warehouse to meet some skaters and officials and watch practice.

Oh, and good job. Solidly good story.
We had eight girls out of thirty who showed up to fresh meat on Saturday who got pulled aside and just did mad skills and they're all getting jumped ahead to I think at least yellow star, so maybe since Antimony had skated loads when she was younger and was still fit from cheerleading she did that? I don't know if that's a thing you do in the States though. To be honest I don't even know if it's a thing that's done outside of our league; I'm just a fledgling NSO.

Yay! Thank you!
New shiny things. Lovely.
Thanks!
Very welcome.
Thank you! :-)
Very welcome.
AAAAHHHH YAY ANTIMONY!

My neurologist says I can't skate -- herniated lumbar discs, fun fun -- but I talked to the NSO organisers at Northside Rollers, where most of my friends skate, and long story short I can still be Mortal Wombat, even if it involves more penalty box overseeing and suchlike on the sidelines than actual skating.

Plus I still get to look at pretty derby ladies!
Hah, yeah. I am jealous of the skaters but man, I cannot skate for shit and don't want the severe injuries (I read Going In Circles). Yay vicariousness!

...aaand now I want Annie to have her own novel. Is that wrong?
I keep wondering about that myself.

Yay! More InCryptid!

... on that note, I have received and read the ARC for Half-Off Ragnarok. Very enjoyable, thank you; no spoilers because that's no fair to folk.
Excellent.
Many thanks. Every time I read Antimony stories I get a yen to do roller derby. Then I remember that I really can't skate and how much breaking my tailbone hurts and decide better. Looking forward to meeting Alex soon.
Yay!
Thank you so much! That was tons of fun.
Very welcome.
Eeeeeeeee I want to give Antimony a hug.
Don't we all.
This was the only thing that made a horrible day better. Thank you, Seanan.
Very welcome.
