CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT open thread!

To celebrate the release of Chimes at Midnight, here. Have an open thread to discuss the book. Judging by the comments I'm seeing, some of you have had time, and I'd really, really rather book discussion (sometimes including spoilers) didn't crop up on other posts.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

Seriously. If anyone comments here at all, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. So please don't read and then yell at me because you encountered spoilers. You were warned. (I will not reply to every comment; I call partial comment amnesty. But I may well join some of the discussion, or answer questions or whatnot.) I will be DELETING all comments containing spoilers which have been left on other posts. No one gets to spoil people here without a label.

You can also start a discussion at my website forums, with less need to be concerned that I will see everything you say! In case you wanted, you know, discussion free of authorial influence, since I always wind up getting involved in these things.

Have fun, and try not to bleed on the carpet.

Once again, there's more new questions than ones that have been answered!

Loved the pie incident - what a great use of slapstick.

Going to be on tenterhooks for the next year to see if Marcia's odd behavior gets explained in the next good. Every time the old king was mentioned in front of her, she dropped something - and as a quarter fae, she can't possibly be old enough to remember him, can she?

I'm loving the hints of the bigger plotline - waiting to see if my guesses are correct - but starting to think a chart of the fae races and from whom they descend might be highly useful soonish.
I need to get around to making a timeline and a chart of the fae races. I think the world of October daye is sorely due for a spoiler full wiki. I can't keep track of who is who.
That is a brilliant idea. Can I help?

My thoughts exactly. I was moaning about this while in the middle of reading the book, still moaning about it now. I mean, seriously. There is a LOT of stuff happening in here!
Could Marcia be the old nursemaid of Arden and Nolan? But then Arden would have recognized her. I'm thinking Marcia was the one who betrayed them to the Queen. Why though, I have no idea.
I kept expecting Marcia to be a goblin fruit addict under the old Queen's control, but if it was that, we would have gotten a reveal in this book... wouldn't we?
Wouldn't it be more obvious if Marcia was an addict? People could pretty much tell Toby was feeling off right off the bat, plus she literally couldn't consume other food that wasn't jam or pie or blood.
Yes; I had the same thoughts. Even with the tracking thingabobby, that doesn't explain how the queen knew Nolan and Arden were there, much less Diandra and about the particular plotting going on. Someone most certainly betrayed them, and Marcia's odd behavior seems to make her the apparent suspect.
Marcia's behavior also puzzled me (actually, I was feeling more dismayed than puzzled--I don't want her to be a traitor!). I need to reread the earlier books to reacquaint myself with how we were introduced to Marcia, but I wondered if she was someone significant in the past that someone had turned almost-human.
I don't want her to be a traitor either! She's a great minor character, and she and Toby seem to genuinely like each other. But her reaction every time King Gilad was mentioned was really odd...
Yeah, I mean...isn't she kind of young to have any knowledge of that era? Like, she wasn't alive then, right?
I kind of had to wonder if Marcia was related to Arden's mother, myself.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has suspicions of Marcia!
Yes, that was a bit worrying for poor Marcia. I like her, but that doesn't bode well, does it?
Thank you kindly. :)
Oooh, glad I'm not the only one who thought Marcia was behaving oddly.
I'm still hoping that once this is over, there will "An Atlas of Faerie", which will also include a guide to the various types, in addition to the various lands.

I fully don't expect this until after it's done, because "Heart of Faerie" is too big a thing to just be a random mention in the last book.
So, this thread got me thinking about Marcia. She's about 1/4 fey. Do we know what kind? (I don't have the books handy right now to check.) She worked at the tea gardens where Amandine was known to frequent. Depending on her age, it's entirely possible that Amandine could have changed her blood ratio. What better way to hide someone than change *what* they are, especially when nobody knows that's a possibility? (Hope chests are still mythical to most fey, right?)

I also am hoping she's not a traitor, but I think there's a good possibility she's both older and more involved the history of the area than we'd have guessed.
Hell, yeah, what's going on with Marcia. :-\
