What's red and white and carries a badge?

Fairy tales are not friendly things. They're dangerous wastelands filled with people who would slit your throat for a magic bean...and the idea that they stopped happening just because we grew up and moved out of the deep dark forest is ludicrous. The narrative has been here all along, watching us, waiting for the moments when we give it opportunity to strike.

There's no such thing as "happy ever after." There's only "once upon a time."

I am delighted to announce that, beginning May 21st, my first serial novel will be publishing on the Kindle via 47North. With a new chapter every two weeks, Indexing will follow the brave women and men of the ATI Management Bureau as they try to protect the everyday world from the predatory stories that are lurking just beyond the edge of sight.

You can see the gritty details here.

With hardships and horrors aplenty, Indexing is a fusion of fairy tale and modern police drama, sort of a "Once Upon a Time meets Criminal Minds" elevator pitch of a story. It's been a lot of fun to write, and the price point is excellent for a new story every two weeks. The print edition will be out in December for those of us who don't do Kindle.

I'm very excited to have the opportunity to tell this story. I hope you'll like it as much as I do.

Will this ever be available in a different format?
Great icon!

From the post I see "The print edition will be out in December for those of us who don't do Kindle." so it looks like yes!

SQUEEEEEEEE!!! *twirls happily*

I have been wishing and waiting for more from this world since I read the short story. :-)
The original short story has been ripped up and rebuilt as part of the first installment!
Here. Take my money. :)
Yay!
Is it available on Amazon UK? Because I'm having a lot of trouble finding at and I really want to pre order.
Me too.

Not able to find it on amazon.co.uk as yet. Is the deal with Amazon for the USA only?
The Amazon Serials program is currently US-only. Unfortunately, this does mean that international readers will be unable to follow along in the bi-monthly format. Authors have no control over this.

The print edition, and complete Kindle edition, will be available in all World English markets in December.
Resisting the urge to order the kindle...
I can totally wait...really I can...

Although I do have to posit that I've very much been enjoying the trials and tribulations of the "happily ever after".

I suppose it could be looked at as a different level of "once upon a time", that's just not my mindset.
Do you have a smartphone? There's a Kindle app for Android phones; I don't know about iphones. But if you can do that then you don't have to have an actual Kindle.

Awesome, and congrats!

Rock on, my amazing writing friend!
I am rockin' as fast as my feet can carry me!
this sounds awesome, and thank you so much for a print edition!
Any time I have a say in the matter.
Yay!!

If I understand this correctly, I pay $2.99, and I get the whole book? It's not like The Human Division, where you pay in installments?

That's pretty fucking awesome! And cheap enough that I won't mind paying for the print edition later on.

Pre-ordered LIKE A BOSS.
Seriously! This is a bargain for everybody.

LIKE A BOSS.

Yay!
Yay! I've ordered mine and I'm really looking forward to it - this will be my second Kindle Serial after that Community College of Magic one. I really like the format, so much better than the clumsy way Scalzi did his serial, and more affordable too! It's cool the way it just updates seamlessly on my Kindle, like a magic, ever expanding book. I'm so excited that serial fiction is coming back, Charles Dickens would be proud of you.
Yeah, I'm interested in the difference between the way The Human Division works and the Kindle serials. It sure seems like you would make a lot more money the former way, but the latter way is super convenient, like you said. I suppose the benefit of The Human Division is that you can pay just $0.99 for one—or any—installment and stop if you don't like it, but it's a matter of saving $2 if you don't like it or paying $12 more if you do! That doesn't seem optimal for readers at all.

Sold. Probably sold again when the print one comes out.
Yay!
How exciting! A bonus book by you this year!

Though it's a shame it's Kindle-only (I know 47north is an Amazon subsidiary), since I have a different standard reader, but the serial format is pretty new and once it works out the kinks, things will probably get more open -- until then, I have other ways to read Kindle-only stories on my phone or my laptop. I love that it's one purchase and not one every week. And that is indeed quite the price point for an entire novel, whatever length it ends up being.

I love that it's just one purchase as well. I couldn't afford it if I had to pay for each installment.

Ordered! That is a ridiculously low price point. :) (And B&N has the Chimes preorder up, gleee.)
I know, right? So cheap!
*Sigh* This looks to be the second Kindle serial I've been intrigued by, but being in Canada, they won't let me buy.
Likewise, dangit.

Sorry to gloom up your announcement post, Seanan. I know you don't have any say in these things. Do you know if a Canadian/UK release of the ebook serial is planned? Can you suggest who at your publishers or amazon we could send puppy-dog-eyes e-mails to in order to request one? Because this does look pretty sweet.

Interesting! And cool!

After reading John Scalzi's "Human Division" week by week, and now this, it seems like serials are A Thing One Can Do Without Being Roundly Mocked again. Which is good for me because one of the ideas I'm bouncing around for once the webcomic is finished (three more weeks!) is a serialized story posted weekly on a WordPress site. (No, I'm not going to try to sell this. It's purely a proof-of-concept can-I-do-this project.)

The best other idea I have is a radio-drama type of project similar to what the Made Of Fail crew did with their Star Trek fanfic production, "Galilea."

Ideas are fun and dangerous things...
Hah, yeah, I've been looking for a new serial! *squee*

Yay! I don't do Kindle, and I hate reading books on the PC, so the print edition will be my birthday treat.
