Summary: And now for something completely different. Velveteen’s health is failing. Jackie Frost knows why. But can she take the necessary steps to end it?
( The surface of the mirror was cold enough that Jackie actually felt it, a short, sharp burst of almost painful chill before she emerged into the warm, peppermint-scented snow of the North Pole...Collapse )

I think it's obvious that I absolutely love pretty much everything about it, even more so since the overarching plot kicked into overdrive! I like how the seriousness of the plot, with real and actual danger and threat can still be balanced with light-heartedness, without either one feeling out of place.
This particular installment was heart-wrenching.
And let me tell you, the scene with Marionette and Jacqueline Claus was amazingly creepy. I got literal goosebumps, which is rare for me!

Entering the Crystal Glitter Unicorn Cloud Castle was like walking into an explosion of fairy tale cliches, each one more sparkly and encrusted with gemstones than the last.

Wow. I really hadn't figured out Marionette before now. That's...frightening. Psychic-vampire-not-Vel kind of frightening. I never want to be in a 'verse she's in. Ever.

Ohhhhh...
“We were supposed to have so much time. What happened to all our time?”
I cried. I cried.
Oh, Vel. Oh, Tag. Oh, Jackie...
Seanan, you magnificent bastard.
Why do I suspect a Xanatos Gambit around the corner, somewhere, somehow?

(Also, I made this on Polyvore, if you're interested.)

"It was like a heavy rain falling on a dry lake: even though there was room for all the water, it was too much to bear."
It is just so... beautiful. In so many ways, in and out of context. Just... I mean... it makes me cry when I think of it in context. Out of context, it is pure poetry.
It honestly makes me think of my favorite Stephen King book, Firestarter ... with Charlie's immense capacity for power just flowing and flowing. Like that scene where she literally burns away a full pond. And the power pouring into her constantly, and how she is completely able to take it all in. Vel kind of scares me just as much as Charlie McGee scares me.
