Fifty days to book release: are you ready to rock?

As of today, we are fifty days from the release of Midnight Blue-Light Special, the second book in the InCryptid series. I am...honestly, I am sort of in shock over here, still. This is one of those series that I desperately wanted to write, and never thought I'd be allowed to. Multi-generational family epic with talking mice and telepathic mathematicians? Seriously? But DAW believed in me, or maybe wanted to see if I'd actually produce the book I was talking about, and somehow that turned into a five book contract and a lot of time spent with the Price family.

I am so blessed, I can't even begin to express it. The fact that I can tell these stories at all is an honor. The part where I get paid for it is like...what? Are you sure? Really? But I do, and it's amazing.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do as a pre-release countdown this time. I did the alphabet for Discount Armageddon, but that really only works once. Suggestions are totally welcome! And of course, we'll have another new short story going up on the website around the time the book comes out, featuring another Johnny and Fran adventure. Lots of things brewing here in Chez McGuire.

Thank you all, so much. Thank you for allowing me to tell these stories. Thank you for being here. And thank you for buying my books. This was a series that had a very narrow market when it started, and you bought enough copies to make DAW see that it had an audience, and that I should get to continue. Soon, we'll break through the candy shell and expose the true darkness of what people keep assuming is my fluffiest universe. Soon.

I can't wait.

Maybe a calendar of the Aeslin mice high holy days, assuming it will not spoil too much future plot? Anything with the mice is fun.
The problem with that—and it's an honest problem—is that a) they have literally thousands, and b) every time I define one, I lock myself that into being something that really happened. In order to keep them situationally appropriate, and be able to actually have some flexibility, plus not having literally a hundred hours to do it, this isn't an option.

Ooh, do something based on the fibonacci sequence.
I love your weird brain.

Spotlight on cryptids? I mean, the Field Guide only covers so much. Maybe little trivia about some of them, or the whereabouts of a specific cryptid?

Or, depending on how many days you do it, something that happened on each of Verity's birthdays. Or another Price's birthdays.
I write spotlights on cryptids! They're called "the books."
It's Dark Fluff. I can't imagine that anyone would assume that it's Bright Fluff.

HAIL THE DARK FLUFFMISTRESS!

I vote... Random number generator, 1-50, and a line from that page of the manuscript? (For amusement, you can also randomize the letters. Like, "[string of letters], five words, no proper nouns. Go!" And then your readers try to unscramble it.)
It's very dark fluff. VERY.

I can't manage your suggestion from work, sorry. And there's too much chance of spoilers later in.
Soon, we'll break through the candy shell and expose the true darkness of what people keep assuming is my fluffiest universe.

That's really exciting, actually. I like your writing best when it starts digging into the darkness behind the fluff. I can't wait to see how you do it in InCryptid.
You can already see the fissures, if you look.
*bounces up and down with incredible xcitement oh wow oh wow oh WOW!*

**goes to pre-order**
Yay!
50 Cryptids of Shade?
...

Noooooooooooooooooooooo.
Soon, we'll break through the candy shell and expose the true darkness of what people keep assuming is my fluffiest universe. Soon.

I hope you'll take my immediate reaction of glee and fear as the high praise it is. *g* We're keenly excited for the new book.
Hooray!
Possibly instead of the alphabet, use the letters in the book title, in order?

Feature filk songs about Incryptid?

Also, somewhat relevant: there is someone in my area named Enid Healey. I was so excited when I realized that. Still grin every time I see the name.
There aren't enough filk songs about InCryptid, sadly!

Dude, that's awesome. Tell her to avoid uncharted forests.

Um... daily haiku?

Sorry, I've got nothing.
It's okay. :)
Thank you for allowing me to tell these stories.

Thank you for telling them. *hugs*
Always. <3
Mmmm, candy shell with dark fluff inside... now I want a truffle almost as much as that book.
I can roll with that.
So the title is Midnight Blue-Light Special...what if you did a tidbit/factoid/etc relevant to this book (or cryptids in general) from each hour on the clock? With midnight being the last day?

Example: 7pm/1900: The best time to visit the Aeslin mice and get them to agree to your new requests is while they are still in their post-feast food-coma.
Interesting thought!

SO very much looking forward to this one. But then, I'm looking forward to -everything- you've written, so sue me for being easy. O.O
No lawsuits forthcoming!
Thank you for telling these stories.

Seriously, I come and go with almost all authors - have periods where I don't want to read their books, and am sad when this coincides with 'new book just came out'.

Yours? Are always anticipated with great joy and staying up way too late to read.

It's like always getting what you want for Christmas.
That is awesome. <3
Counting down the days. :D Good luck with the promo!
Thanks!
Already ordered my copy. Looking forward to it with much glee! :D
Yay!
YAY!!! More Verity!!!
Yup.
I like the idea of doing something counting the hours to midnight, which is up-thread.

I also like the idea of more Aeslin mice, but that's because the Aeslin mice amuse the heck out of me.

You could also do a countdown of things the Price family is glad the mice DON'T celebrate (yet)... Of course, that also locks you in but in reverse, so probably that won't fly, but I figured I'd mention it.
Thanks for the thoughts.
How about snippets from the Price/Healy family genealogy(ies)? I'm thinking just a sentence or a paragraph, which would give you space to mention relatives from any number of different generations and branches with enough detail to tease but not so much as to create continuity problems. (Also, possibly a good way to leave yourself springboards for future short stories scattered around the Incryptid universe, as the opportunity arises for such to be written.)
Nooooooooooooooooooooooo. That actually does create continuity problems, and locks things in in a way I'd rather avoid.
I am so, so excited! And I adore the new cover; I think it's lovely to have a heroine shown in different outfits that are are also appropriate to whatever she happens to be doing at the time. It's a great contrast and really fun.

I got my copy of A Fantasy Medley 2 in the post a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed Rat Catcher. And it arrived so quickly, especially considering it had to be shipped overseas!
Yay!
How about a prime number sequence? With Mice!
No mice.

There will be no mice in the lead-in to this book.
I loved Discount Armageddon, coming into it largely completely unaware of any other shorts or novellas you'd already written. I'm really looking forward to the next book. And of course would love to interview you again for my site as part of the release or pre-release build-up!
Drop me an email, I'm always up for interviews.

I have no suggestions (am stuck in the hospital indefinitely, it's already eating my braaaaaains), but I saw this entry and my mind went CHEESE! AND! CAKE! I loved the heck out of Discount Armageddon and can't wait to see more of your "fluffiest universe." :)

Congrats on the upcoming release of what I am sure will be another amazing (and bestselling) book! Only 50 days! Whee!!

Edit because this needed Cornkitty. Because CORNKITTY.
CORNKITTY LOVES ME!!!!
