The difference between a princess and a wicked witch can be very hard to see.
I am absolutely delighted to announce that my story, "Emeralds to Emeralds, Dust to Dust," will be appearing in the anthology Oz Reimagined: New Tales from the Emerald City and Beyond, edited by John Joseph Adams and Douglas Cohen. It will be available in February 2013.
Let's be honest here. You've always wanted to see a grown-up, embittered, lesbian Dorothy living with her girlfriend (Polychrome, naturally) in the slums of the Emerald City, solving crimes with the aid of her trusty gourd Friday, Jack Pumpkinhead, haven't you? Well, now you can.
And yes, this is the story that inspired me to start working on a dark urban fantasy Oz trilogy. Because sleep is for the weak, or something.
Also, FYI, on my recent plane flights with my toddler I managed to get him sufficiently immersed in Nihao Kai-Lan to permit me to read the first Incryptid book, and oh, it is so delicious. I absolutely love the way you drew this universe; I desperately want my own family of Aeslin mice now (except for all the ways in which I recognize that I actually don't, but -- look, I'm a cleric in my professional life; theological mice, how is that not awesome?); I love Verity's family; I love Verity; and I love the way you wrote Dominic, who is fabulous, and believable in his struggle with Verity's worldview, and also their romance is everything I adore (a character who can make "insufferable" sound like a term of endearment? SIGN ME UP :-), and the dragon, and -- oh, just all of it. Fantastic. Thank you for writing it.
Well, I'd normally say that no, I haven't always wanted such a thing, mainly because I didn't know there could be such a thing. It'd never crossed my mind.
But now that you've described it, apparently I have always wanted such a thing.
February, you say. So, it'll be out once I get my birthday money (that is, my monthly paycheck)...
I love short stories, but I really hate buying whole anthologies full of authors I don't know. it feels like to much of a gamble (I've been burned a few to many times where it feel like i only like one short story in the whole book that cost me $15) but I would totally buy a book full of your short stories, just saying. You should totally put one out some day.
In this case, you can actually buy the stories as "singles."
There are a lot of factors that play into whether an author puts out a short story collection, including "how long are those stories under contract to somewhere else." I do not currently own the rights to reprint most of my short fiction, and won't for years.
This tired dyslexic misread "edited by John Joseph Adams and Douglas Cohen", had a WHAT?!moment, and had to re-read to make sure that your story was not somehow appearing in an anthology edited by Douglas Adams, because while that would be very cool indeed (and knowing you maybe even possible), it would also require a bit more explanation.
I tend to like my Oz Ozzy. The idea of Oz and Grown Up just seem incompatible to me. Having said that, I have now read enough of you to know I will try this story, and more then likely find my way to a series with you at the helm. You do good words, and I love that more then my preconceived ideas of how something should be.
Will this be in the same universe as The Nativity of Chance or completely different? Or is that something you aren't able to answer yet, for one reason or another?
Edited to add: I know that you have Silver Slipper Blues as part of its verse, but wasn't sure if they were completely separate. Just curious!
