The difference between a princess and a wicked witch can be very hard to see.
I am absolutely delighted to announce that my story, "Emeralds to Emeralds, Dust to Dust," will be appearing in the anthology Oz Reimagined: New Tales from the Emerald City and Beyond, edited by John Joseph Adams and Douglas Cohen. It will be available in February 2013.
Let's be honest here. You've always wanted to see a grown-up, embittered, lesbian Dorothy living with her girlfriend (Polychrome, naturally) in the slums of the Emerald City, solving crimes with the aid of her trusty gourd Friday, Jack Pumpkinhead, haven't you? Well, now you can.
And yes, this is the story that inspired me to start working on a dark urban fantasy Oz trilogy. Because sleep is for the weak, or something.
Joining the chorus of 'oh, hell yes!" and various similar exclamations!
I was so into Oz as a kid that I wanted to join the L. Frank Baum Society until I found out the dues were way more than my allowance :(
Now they are pretty easy to find (especially with e-publishing, but the physical books are too), but when I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s, some of the more obscure books (not even the Ruth Plumly Thompsons and such, just the later Baum titles and his non-Oz books) were pretty hard to find and I was sort of obsessed with tracking down them all.
Out of the original 14, I could never get my hands on _The Tin Woodman of Oz_ and still haven't read it.
All of which is a long winded way of saying, yes, an adult-oriented Oz retelling (a whole book of them!) would rock.
Which reminds me to mention that I just finished my first complete reread of the Newsflesh trilogy, and it's even better reading them all in one swell foop. I think I got more of the nuance and foreshadowing and all that kind of wonderful stuff this time.
On the other hand, I had to have something more innocuous set aside to read at bedtime, because, well, zombies and bloggers and politics oh my - not good for the sleepin'.
Adding this to my Goodreads account so I can get it when it comes out. Now wondering if I should start reading the OZ books again since it has been 20 + years.

Both Sarah and I had the same reaction to this, which is No, we'd never thought about it before. But now we MUST read about it! Congratulations, and we're looking forward to the story. Also, we hope the trilogy sees print someday.
