In which Thomas has a birthday, Seanan has a tired, and travel never really ends.

Well, it's official: as of this past Sunday (when I was a bad monkey, and had abandoned my beloved cats for the dubious comforts of Comic-Con), Thomas Price Lynn Rhymer Taylor McGuire, my blue classic tabby and white male Maine Coon, is two years old. This means he has ceased to be a kitten, and has become an official cat. Not that he seems to have noticed. Most of his time is still spent racing around the house like a loon, collapsing in my arms and purring loudly, and demanding to be fed. With any luck, this is his adult personality, and I have finally fulfilled my childhood dream of having a twenty-pound kitten.

The cats, all three, are still very clingy and unsettled about my recent trip to San Diego, which went on rather longer than any of them wanted it to, and has resulted in my spending my nights beneath roughly eighty pounds of fluff. This is why I am going to be slaughtered in my sleep Sunday night, since I'm leaving work early today and flying straight to Portland. Alas. On the plus side, I intend to have a good time while I'm there, and I'm only gone for three nights this time. Maybe they won't notice.

...no, that's silly. They're going to eat me.

(Portland is not a public event, by the way, which is why it's not listed on my Appearances page. Always check there if you want to know if I'm going somewhere for social and sharable reasons.)

Naturally, I am totally exhausted, which has led to things like poor Vixy getting told all about the Tyrannosaurus leech. (She took it better than Shawn did when I told him about the axolotl.) I've managed to shower, do laundry, and pack a suitcase that's actually cleared for flight, containing no weapons of any kind. This is an accomplishment in my current condition, and I want you all to be very, very proud of me.

San Diego was lovely, and I'm going to keep promising to write a con report right up until too much time has passed and I forget about it. (This fate has claimed so very many trips in recent years. Disney World anyone?) Right now, I'm going to take a few deep breaths and prepare to plunge back into the fray. Because it never, never ends.

See you when I get home!

Enjoy PDX. It's a fine place here. :-)
I'm a fan!
Have a safe trip and enjoy Portland!

Cats, please don't eat Seanan in anticipation of this trip. We need her as much as you do. (Okay, maybe not. Stop glaring at me like that.)
They are mad, mad, mad cats.

SO MAD.
...I'm going to keep promising to write a con report...

Couldn't you just not promise to write a con report? I don't think anybody would complain or anything, as long as nothing bad happens from not promising to write a con report.

(On the other hand, if that's a clause in your deal with the crossroads, or it's part of the ritual that keeps a serial killer trapped in a corn maze, or something like that, I understand entirely.)
It's ritual. :) But thank you.
What's interesting is that in the show circuit, Thomas was considered a cat at 8 months. Can't wait to hear how big he is when he's done filling out properly in another year or two! Big beautiful boy :)

Happy birthday to Thomas from the Maines here in Texas, and have FUN in Portland!
I know! So weird.
Enjoy your trip -- and eat well, while you're gone; your cats need their vitamins!
...thanks.
I am, as always, very, very proud of you. :)

Happy birthday, Thomas! Here, have some favorite treats. :)
Don't forget to bribe the other two!

So ... You shipped your weapons ahead? Or do you have spares stored at Vixy's house?

(If you need to send a cache ahead for Windycon, I B Here 4 U. I'll be driving.)
Thanks!
(She took it better than Shawn did when I told him about the axolotl.)

After looking up the axolotl, I have no idea why somebody would have trouble with the concept. Is there something else you skipped over, like virology or uses in mad science?

Actually, they're kind of cute.
I don't know! He just considers them terrifying.
At twelve years, Yeti is still very much a big kitten. He doesn’t zoom around the house quite as much as he used to, but he’s still pretty active. (The Zuke’s glucosamine-chondroitin treats help with that.)

Expect Thomas to fill out a bit more; Maine Coons can take 3–5 years to reach full size.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to that. He's lanky and wee now.
I've had Maine Coons at fifteen running around the house like mad crazies. They are always kittens in my experience. So no matter how fluffy and large he gets when he stops growing at 4-ish he will always be a kitTON.
YAY!
An early welcome to Portlandia!

If you haven't already done so, you really need to try the crab and cheese soup from either the Corbett/Hawthorne fish house. It's won best soup in the city for several years.

If you're headed over to the Beaverton Powell's books (my favorite), be aware that the Pollo Loco has closed : (

Have fun here!

Also; I lucked out and my cat Shiro is a 10 year old cuddle bunny who still likes to chase stuff. Thankfully he's given up on chasing me down the halls, biting my ankles, and running away. He's also given up on crawling inside my biker boots and waiting inside in ambush... He's no longer 21 pounds of kitten, because I'm in charge of his food and my ex isn't. He's a much healthier 16 pounds of kitten.
the Pollo Loco has been replaced by a Famous Dave's BBQ stand, which is very good, and of course, their bread pudding is the best ever, despite the sauce needing a touch of bourbon in it.

Have fun! I'm sure the cats will forgive you... eventually.

With any luck, you'll get the best of mature and kitten behaviours out of your boy - My Resident Felines are *counts on fingers* eleven this year, and still rocketing around the house like kittens when the mood strikes.
Awesomesauce.
Happy Birthday to Thomas! Long may Prince Poofypants rule!
He fluffs about.
Happy fluffy birthday!
Thank you!
Portland is not a public event, by the way,

*sad face* but have fun while you are here.
I did!
Yay for Thomas. And thank you for sharing your kitty stuff with us, it always makes me smile.
They make me smile, too. Good kitties are great.
I was traveling a lot over the past year for both work and personal reasons. I always hired a cat sitter to come in if I was going to be gone more than a couple of nights, but my cat (a dilute calico named Annabel Lee, after the Edgar Allan Poe poem) recognized that it was NOT the same. When I came home after Christmas, after being away for two weeks, she jumped up on me and purred for over an hour straight. (Granted, she's a purr machine, but even she doesn't usually go for more than 15-20 minutes at a clip.) She was also underfoot for weeks afterward. And yes, she slept on my chest, until she remembered I toss too much in my sleep to be even a remotely comfortable sleeping spot.

But now work has settled down, I broke up with the long-distance boyfriend, and I shouldn't have to travel much at all until my European vacation in late November. I've actually been home for two weekends in a row, which hasn't happened since probably September or October of last year. I have a very happy kitty right now.
Mom does the cat sitting when I'm away, so they're not alone, but they absolutely know it's Not Right.

Annabel Lee is a great name for a dilute calico.
Happy Cathood, Thomas! Twenty pounds is a lot of cat, I'm sure he wears it well.

I'm glad comic con was good! I look forward to details. It looked awesome from the pictures flooding every online orifice I frequent. :P

good luck on getting onto the plane weapons free! Should you wake up in a cat stomach don't panic, there's almost always a hairball or two to hitch a lift back out on.
Hee.
Be careful ... cats keep grudges. If they were able to keep lists, humanity would be doomed. Dooooomed I say!

Have a pleasant trip anyway. ^_^
They are over their anger, and have settled for clingy.
As long as the cats don't eat you until after Pittsburgh. I'd hate to have all these practice sessions go to waste...
Heh.
Congratulations to Thomas for making it into adulthood! I hope you have a good trip to Portland and back.
It was great.
Many happy returns to Thomas for his entry into cathood. Given the choice between a giant leech and an axolotl I'm going to take the axolotl every time. If it was a weta I'd have to think about it, though.
Weta are amazing and I want one.
happy belated birthday, Thomas!
Thank you!
Welcome back!

Did you manage to get the Scarah Screams doll? I heard it was pretty difficult this year. Lots of neat stuff, though.
From a scalper. :( It was horrible.
