I am really, really happy about the fact that "Lost" has just been reprinted in Lightspeed Magazine. "Lost" was originally published in Ravens in the Library, and it was, through accident of timing, my very first physical publication (I had one story printed first, "Let's Pretend," but that was and has remained web-only). It's a story about pirates, and children, and running away, and what it costs to have everything you wanted, and how much of that cost is paid by the people you leave behind. I love it a lot. And you can read it again now, if you missed it the first time.
Finally, for right now, I've published another poem, "Wounds," in the June issue of Apex. It's about wizards, and mermaids, and the price of magic, and how much we hurt each other.
I LOVED "Lost" - in a teary, choked up but smiling kind of way. "Wounds" moved me also, but in a more detached fashion - more appreciating the injection of realism into faerie, if that makes any sense? Thank you so much for sharing both of these!
Fabulous Seanan, I've learned by now not to read your short stories on crowded trains or in rooms with my children where they see me get all teary-eyed and fret over what's wrong. Lost was another good one, made better by the fact that I have a blue-eyed 11-year old adventurer at home (and another who likes to sing). Thanks for sharing - I may give this one to my aspiring pirate queens to read as well. And we will all look forward to more!
Oh dear gods I should have known better than to read this at work. Luckily I've managed to stifle my sobs and no one can see the tears rolling down my face.
i'm not often a cry-at-stories type, and Lost didn't make me cry (but parts of your books have), but i've got goosebumps from my toes to the top of my head. i would have been one of the first to sing. thank you for sharing this. :)
Oh, this was just beautiful. I didn't cry (whihc is unusual as I'm a big sook most of the time), but I did get the goosebumps that someone upthread mentioned.
I loved "Lost." Proofreading the June issue of Lightspeed was my first exposure to the story, and I read it three times (twice because I do two passes of each story for proofing, the third because I wanted to). Wonderful piece.
(Also, if there are still any typoes in there ... my bad!)
Oh, hooray! The last time I checked Amazon, a used copy of Ravens was about $280. I had rather despaired of ever reading this story. Well, anytime soon, at least.
This will be a perfect post-work treat this evening. Where no one can see me cry (based on previous comments). :-)
Both of these were beautiful, and I was not expecting the absolute heartwrenching "Lost" gave me - I agree with every one of the previous comments about it, including the crying and hoping they fly.

That was a wonderful story.
Edit: By which I meant "Lost". Now I'll go check out the other one.

And I figured, 'cause the other one is a poem. :)

Some stories punch me in the heart, and I need a moment to remember how that whole "heartbeat-and-breathing" thing is supposed to work.
"Lost" is the second type.

'Tearjerker' sounds too abrupt to describe it. "Inciter of weeping" fits its better.
