When will you rise...and when will you fall?

I've spoken before about my love of fanfic, and how it allows you to do things you can't necessarily do "in canon." One of those things, one of my favorite things, is the alternate universe. What would have happened if Toby had never become a fish? If Thomas had convinced Alice to go back to the Covenant with him, instead of leaving it for her?

If someone else had been the first to die?

I have written an alternate ending to Feed, picking up at what was originally chapter twenty-five. It's called Fed, and I'm very pleased with it, in part because it shows that no, the original ending wasn't the worst possible outcome. This was.

Fed is kindly being hosted by Orbit, thus preventing me from becoming a blibbering mess in the week leading up to the release of Blackout, and for right now, you can download and read by liking the Facebook page they've set up specifically for this purpose. (It's getting a one-week Facebook exclusive for marketing purposes, and I surely would appreciate it if you went and hit the "like" button.) This is full of spoilers, so I recommend against reading it if you haven't read Feed.

Rise up while you can.

That was actually how I was expecting the book to end, more or less, until you totally went the other direction. This alternative ending would have made it more of a traditional zombie story which, in my opinion, would have made Feed and great read simply based upon the premise and execution. I think the published ending made the book, and story, far more unique and interesting, forcing Feed to be an awesome read.

Plus it got us two more books.

Either way thank you sharing this. It reminded me why I love the Newsflesh series so much and made me even more excited for Blackout.
Thank you.

And yeah; I think this is what everyone expected, including me, when the book started. It just...didn't work that way.
User janetmiles referenced to your post from In which Seanan McGuire is evil, yes indeedy saying: [...] but if I understood correctly will be released to the general public in a week. Here's her post [...]
What would have happened if Toby had never become a fish?

The resulting story would break my heart into little tiny pieces, that's what. Gilly :(
Oh for the love of. How did I manage to screw up that italics tag?
Yeah, it would have been so different.
This week has sucked epically beyond the telling of it.

And honestly, this made me cry. On the other hand, it was wonderful and knowing that if was the original ending we wouldn't have Deadline and Blackout, it strangely made me happy. Very well done.
Aw.

All the hugs.

oh my oh my! I've just poured myself out of a plane from school and I'm not entirely certain it would be emotionally wise to read this. Luckily emotionally wise is one of the many good qualities that I don't have. Ah well, at least I'll have cats to cuddle up with afterwards.

Hope you're similarly be-cat'd and able to chill, despite blackout. I will subdue my blackout squee (so very much squee) and shamble on to my inevitable, weepy fate.
The cats are so very cuddly right now. They can tell I'm distressed.
cats are great at cuddles without context. I hope you can relax with the furpersons soon. :)
May is officially Zombiemas.
It's the most wonderful time of the fear!
Poor Shaun and George.

I agree about liking alternate universes.
So much fun.
That's the ending I was so afraid you were heading for and was pleasantly surprised not to get, for what that may be worth...
Yay!
The actual ending was so epically correct that I put Feed first on my Hugo ballot. I would not have done so with this ending. Not that this is a wrong ending, per se, but the one you stuck in the book was amazeballs. With breadsticks.

Ouch. Yeah, that would definitely have been worse. But as soon as I read the opening bit and knew which way the dart flew I thought that might be where we were heading. I'm going to go curl up with Feed again now and then Deadline so I can be prepared for Blackout as soon as it's released!

Yay!
I don't know whether I'm squeeing for joy because there's more Newsflesh or about to cry because of that ending. Either way, I missed this last week because I was finishing up my undergrad thesis, but now I'm done and can enjoy/cry all over. (That also means that I can go and buy Blackout without any guilt over schoolwork!)
Yay!
