I crawled out of bed at the unheard-of hour of 8:15am Tuesday morning to go to the bookstore so I'd have time to read the whole book before work. And I did, and it was good, and I was so so *so* out of it all day and babbling at people about religious mice and monster-hunting waitresses. Fortunately my customers are used to me.

I picked up an ebook copy tonight so I can mark it up. Makes it easier to find things. But I have 2 paper copies tallied against the first week sales, so I don't have to feel bad about that.
In my opinion, you don't have to feel bad about e-books at all. Their only down side is they don't count toward bestseller lists, but since you've already bought paper you've contributed to that too.

I have to admit when I was working on the Aeslin mice song, and searching for the mentions of them in the text, I was wishing for an e-book. I just can't afford to buy two copies right now.

I haven't picked up the book yet (being unemployed has forced me to cut back on my addiction), but I like that the cover art doesn't feature an ass shot where she's looking over her shoulder while she's wearing a pair of low rider tight leather pants that show her tramp stamp, and she's not holding a sword either.

I could have probably found a more awkward way to put that, but it's late, and I'm tired, and I'm only so capable of bad word smithing that much.

On a totally different topic, you might enjoy Mark Lanegan's latest, The Gravedigger's Song. If you sign up for the band's mailing list you can get a free copy of the song.
Yeah, Seanan's really pleased with the cover too. I feel like she has totally won the cover artist lottery. All the series cover artists actually READ the books! :D

I usually can't re-read a book the same week. Today I had a four-hour (each way) bus commute, and one book. There was almost as much gleeful giggling on the way home, and I had to pause every now and then to just bask in the delight. Dominic's slow coming-around! THE MICE! The holidays! Batgirl! The vaguely-legal sublet! ISTAS! FLAMING DRAGON PRINCESSES.

Unexpectedly, Dominic reminded me just a little of my dear best friend, he who loves zombies, chainsaws, and bad puns a little too much for the comfort of most people around him. It's the flagrant aiming for Lawful Good, with a somewhat outdated scorecard for "good", with bonus snark, horrible endearments, and slightly not-expecting-that attitude towards romance. (I am *never going to tell him this*, but it remains true, and made me smile.)
I have to admit when dragon princesses' immunity was mentioned my first thought was "what do you MEAN they have no special abilities?"

But the job that popped into mind as perfect for them doesn't pay very well (I think) and involves serious physical effort, so I guess they're unsuited for other reasons.

So. Just so you know, it is the first book I read all the way through after my surgery last week -- so what a lovely first read. I loved the mice! I loved the humor. And, as an added braindead comment, I really want more Sarah. Telepathic nonhuman mathematicians, not so hard to believe -- I work with mathematicians all day. I'm sure some of them have to be cryptids.
Just don't tell them you're on to them...
Loved it! I especially love the whole "hero without superpowers" thing you were talking about (in one of the interviews you linked . . ? Can't rememeber which)--that's always one of my pet peeves, as well. I'd rather have training and skill than superpowers on my side. There's a reason Oracle, Black Canary, and Tim!Robin are three of my favorite superheroes.

Also, I picked this up, finished it in one night (not unusual), and then lent it to a friend . . . who gave it back the next day (very unusual!) with a grin and, "When's the next one?" To which I replied, "Next year, but here's Rosemary and Rue."
Gateway drug! :D

I pre-ordered it, forgot what day it came out, and was very pleasantly surprised when it popped up on my Kindle Tuesday morning (along with a Patricia Briggs book. Tuesday was a Good Day). I loved this book! Seanan, can I just give you all of my monies now? You totally deserve them.
Seanan, can I just give you all of my monies now?

Ah, but that's not how the reward system works. She writes a book, you buy the book, she gets money. The money serves as an additional reward for writing the book (finishing the book is apparently enough of an incentive in itself), making writing the next book more appealing, et cetera.

If you give Seanan all of your money now, you're breaking that part of the feedback loop, which limits you to telling her that this was a wonderful book and you're definitely buying the next one, and so forth.

Now, if you can figure out some way to get All The Books Seanan Is Going To Write Ever, then you could give her all of your monies right now. But that would involve a time machine, and risk paradox, with a possibility of imploding the universe. (On the other hand, if you can figure out a way to do that safely, could you pick up copies for me? Thanks in advance.)

So, any chance Verity trained here? Or would it be too high-profile?

Since it opened in April 2011, I'd say the timing would be tricky. She might have gone there when she was on Dance or Die, but at that point it'd be more to keep in practice than to learn anything new.

When I found the playlist at the back of the book I decided to go hunting songs on Spotify, turns out they're almost all there! So I made a playlist which I thought I'd share here in case anyone else uses Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/ladydrakaina/playlist/7wwxtLe07lM2DeTGVVoFMi It is missing Corrupt by Karissa Noel, and Adele's Rumor Has It wasn't available, so I substituted the Glee cover.
You are awesome. ^ v ^

I had an Amazon gift card to spend, so I found samples of the mp3s, and downloaded all the ones I liked. Also, "Lake Pontchartrain," since I was downloading Ludo, anyway.

Did anyone else think, "Huh, wasn't she worried about James? Poor dude gets dumped in a closet, abandoned, and Verity doesn't worry about his ass at all until the end of the book?" (Well, at least it came up at the end of the book.) Yeah, yeah, I know she's busy and needs to get the Covenant guy out of there, but I still uh, wondered a bit.

Anyhoo, I had a good time. I look forward to more Prices. Especially backstories of Prices, and finding out how deadly Antimony is 'cause I think I'm already scared. Oh yeah, and where all the family cryptids come from. I think I want a longer family tree than just the last couple of branches, though. I think I am getting mixed up with all of the great-grandmother quotes in the epigraphs. (Uh...Verity's mom is Evelyn, whose mom is a cuckoo... dad's side, Alice is the grandma, possibly Frances's kid, and I'm not sure where Enid comes in...erk, yeah, there's a lot I'm missing somewhere.)
I think a family tree is planned in the future for the website where the short stories are.

What I know (I think): Enid and Alexander Healy were the ones who broke away from the Covenant and came to America.
Their son Jonathan married Frances Brown. (Jonathan and Fran are featured in a couple of short stories available for free on Seanan's website.)
Jonathan and Frances had Alice, who is one of the two grandmothers Verity talks about (she's the one currently spelunking in Hell.)
Alice married Thomas Price, who'd been sent by the Covenant to America to try to convince the Healys to come back, and instead stayed.
Alice and Thomas had Kevin (Verity's father) and Jane. Jane married Theodore Harrington and they have two kids, Artie and Elsie.

On the other side, there's Verity's other grandmother, Angela, who's one of the two sane Cuckoos we know.
Angela is married to a revenant. They adopted Evelyn (Verity's mother). (They later also adopted Sarah.)

So when Verity says great-grandmother, she means Fran, and when she says great-great-grandmother, she means Enid. When she says grandmother she either means Alice (her dad's side) or Angela (her mom's side).

Love this book. Patiently waited until the actual release date, and it was worth the wait. Poor Dominic. I think Hurricane Verity probably did a number on his worldview. It'll be good for him, though. ^-^
She breaks her toys a lot, it's true.
Loved it! Sarah, Istas, Candy, Carol, the mice... I'm so glad Verity's coworkers survived the snake cult. I hope we see more of Carol, and other various gorgons, in the later books.

The Healys/Prices feel like a real clan you've encountered and you're acting as their historian, sharing their stories with us. The family and their nearest and dearest seem so fleshed out.
That is the best compliment you can give an author. Thank you.
That was perfect. Amazing and wonderful and perfect. And literally laugh out loud funny (I kept reading bits to my honey, who, without context, had no idea why I was laughing with laughter but was willing to play along.) Lovely. HAIL. :)

And now, back to Late Eclipses (I was late to the party and have been merrily mainlining catching up.
Er. Dying with laughter. Perhaps sleep would be a good plan.

Ohmigosh this was *fantastic*. I've pretty much loved every single book you've put out so far, but I *really* like this one loads. Perhaps because Verity's personality is more similar to mine? Except I don't carry nearly that much weaponry. Mostly because my friends mistrust me around live steel.
Discount Armageddon was everything I hoped it would be, and the only reason I didn't finish it last night was because benadryl went in for the KO.
So ready to pester a friend of mine into training me for freerunning....
This makes me happy. :)
Verity and Dominic's discussion outside the gingerbread shop suddenly reminded me of the 1964 movie "The Last Man on Earth." Oh yeah, Spoiler Alert! (for the movie, not the book)

The novel it was based on was later adapted again for the big screen as "The Omega Man" and yet again as "I Am Legend," so I hope most folks reading this are at least somewhat familiar with the basic premise. The title character of the 1964 movie had been going about his self-imposed duty of ridding the world of "vampires" (as they were termed in the movie) for so long that it had become a dull, soul-wearying routine. He discovers evidence that others are out there somewhere also killing these "vampires." Without going into detail here, he learns that some victims of the plague have retained their intellect, formed a community, raised families, and have been killing the more dangerous, mindless plague victims in order to protect themselves.

Our hero has, without realizing it until it is too late, been killing both. To them, he is greater monster, the Legendary monster. Makes an interesting parallel to the Covenant, doesn't it?

Oh, and the title character of "The Last Man on Earth" was played by the equally legendary Vincent Price. Coincidence?
Not coincidence; homage. ;)

YAY
Haz book!
Haz daughter!
Let the wild rumpus begin!
Hooray!
As I said on Amazon (I didn't buy it from them), the mice may be the best fictional(?) race ever, even better than the Nac Mac Feegle. I couldn't help imagining Cagney and Lacey encountering a colony, and when I did, my cow-irker looked at me with worry and/or fear as he'd never heard me laugh, much less with that special tinge of insanity.
'scuse, pleez...."Nac Mac Feegle"? I have not encountered them yet, and would like to know where to look?

OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK, I LOVE THIS FAMILY, I LOVE THIS WORLD.

This book and "Divine Misfortune" by A. Lee Martinez are the only new books so far that I physically hugged with squeals of mirth after just the first few pages.
Best endorsement ever.

HAIL!!!

Just finished this, in all of it's kick-ass fabulousness. So excited to finally delve into the InCryptid world - absolutely love it!

Hail! to another Verity book. Hail! to any possibility of more InCryptid books to come. Hail! Hail! Hail!!!
HAIL!
It is like you extracted the pure essence of nerd pop culture, and distilled it into book form. I lost COUNT of the number of nerd references, and the greater number of things that were not direct references but still evoked the spirit of nerd things that I love.
Yay!
I am gigglefitting a lot now. The mice. The inconvenient holy days. Dominic coming around. The reveal on the dragon princesses. Istas.

I'm amazed Dominic survived Verity's wrath after the dance contest, tho. :P Hehe.
She was...put out, yes.
I keep envisioning what the opening of the book would be from Dominic's point of view....

Possibly rising at sunset, some kind of devotional ritual and preparedness before leaving on his "rounds". Lots of brooding about mankind's place in the world and his holy task. The slaying of the ahool. All is according to The Mission...

Then he suddenly encounters upside-down blonde in a skimpy outfit, pointing a gun at him, cheerily asking him if he's ever been shot in the head.

The poor boy never had a chance.
No, he really, really didn't.
Very nice. I especially liked the shout out to the siren song!</p>

I expected Verity to be a better fighter, but the story was great. Like many here I like Istas, and the mice.

Verity and her family are fascinating, and I look forward to seeing if Dominic can keep walking that tight rope or if he ends up betraying someone.

Did anyone else notice that the relatively low caliber gun shot sound hurt the ears of the servitors, but the loud music later didn't seem to, or am I just over focused on hearing?

I hope Kitty getting the bar means we get to see more of the coworkers I like all of them.

Hail! Book of extra rereadability!
Hence forth will this 7th day of March be dubbed the celebration of the release of the pink book of gummy bears and many visitors!

YES I was looking through the comments to see if anybody else was gleeful at the Siren Song/Emerald Green Vixy reference!

*squee*

I am from the home of the Jackalope (don't believe me? do a search on Douglas, Wyoming) and I cannot tell you how loud my delight was to read their little mention on page 189, but I will say that it is a good thing I live alone because I would have woken the house. You have made me a very happy WyomingGirl.

*Adoring You*
And jackalopes do have some small basis in reality. Rabbits infected with the Shope pappiloma virus can suffer from warty growths that resemble horns, antlers, or tusks. The study of jackalopes laid part of the groundwork that led to HPV vaccines.
