It's interesting to contrast right now with nine days to Rosemary and Rue, when I was, well...let's just say that food and I were not long-term acquaintances during the few weeks right before that book came out. I was a screaming puddle of neurosis. I still am, to a certain degree; I'm not going to pretend that I'm not worried. Will people like this book? Will they like the world? Will they understand why I needed to start this series now, rather than waiting another x years to finish Toby?
(I got so annoyed at Joss Whedon when he left Buffy to work on Firefly, and I still think both shows would have been better served if he had stuck out the end of Buffy Summers and her story before moving on. So I get that particular "hey!" reaction. But books and TV are different, and this is only slowing Toby down a little bit, not leaving her entirely without supervision.)
I want this book to do well, partially because, well, no one writes a book they're hoping to see fail, but also because I want to spend so much time in this world. I want to write the full stories of four different generations, and that's going to take time. That's going to take commitment, and not just from me.
But oh, I love this world. And in nine days, reindeer games aside, you get the chance to maybe hopefully love them, too.
Nine days.

And let me say: I would describe myself as one of the biggest Toby Daye-admirers which are out there ... I just LOVE LOVE LOVE that series (and am eagerly awaiting news that DAW purchased further books of that series - I so hope for the planned ten or more!) BUT I as a reader understand why you decided to go for DISCOUNT at this time. And I am looking forward to it. It sounds interesting.
Plus, I guess for you as a writer it does make sense to start another novel series while your first one is still around. Because if Toby might end one day, InCryptid could already be well established within the reader-ship. ,-)
Nice Joss Whedon camparision, by the way (because I think the Toby novels and the Buffy tv show have some things in common - love them both!). And I 100% agree with u. Loved Firefly but trying to handle three shows at ones definitely didn't work out so well ...
I formyself would love to see the next Toby book(s) earlier, but if I like InCryptid - hey, then at least I can get another Seanan book two times a year ,-) (Damn, you are writing fast!)

If you took commissions, and I were competent to have shaped my literary desires into a coherent description, I'd have asked you to write something like this.
Soooo nine days to wait?
We'll all cope.
Will it delay Toby?
Yeah, but it will enrich her too, because that's just how things work.
On another note, speaking of reindeer games - did you manage to see the reindeer at the SF Academy of Science?
Reindeer are utterly and completely adorable.
Their feet are fuzzy, who knew?
They are like little plushy bear deer.
You see why the Robber Girl was always hugging hers.
If you missed them, and if they do it again next Christmas, you must go.
(Oh, at definitely over 40 pounds, of course, they are potential KILLER fluffy deer.)

At this particular point in time you have my trust. I trust you as a writer so much I will read pretty well anything you do. If you're happy writing a new series I'm happy to read it. When you go back to Toby I'll read her too. And dear god, let the time pass quickly so I can read Blackout.
I just like what you do, so I hope you do too.

I'm glad that you aren't as much of a mess about this release, although I'm distressed about why--you deserve all the good things, and I'm sorry that people suck sometimes.

But: "One Hell of a Ride" sold me on it pretty completely, and the alphabet hasn't hurt, either. So I'm excited, and hoping it's received very well indeed, because I'd like to find out more about this world.

And it's not like Joss, as you say, because you're not handing Toby off to someone else (or, god forbid, leaving her to own devices). It's just going to take a little longer to get through the series, which is fine because A) Awesome Cryptozoologists to tide us over, and B) Toby is worth the wait. As are the After The End Times crew.
Only 9 days! Man, every year I fail to mentally grasp how short February is (and it's even leap year.)

I know that your nerves are what they are, I am looking forward to reading Discount Armageddon. So are a lot of other peoples. I suspect quiet strongly that we will like it as much as Toby and George. I don't read Zombie books I really don't and \i love George.

One of my friends had tossed it into her to-read when I first mentioned it, but she's pushed it way up on her to-read list after she read my review. So there's that.

There are a certain few trusted authors, including you, of whom I can honestly say "You write it, I'll read it". I'm still going to be eagerly awaiting the next Toby Daye book, the next Newsflesh book (even if I did have nightmares, and especially as I "don't read zombie books"), and I confidently expect to add the world of Discount Armageddon to the list.

The thing with Josh? He didn't have the ability to juggle more than one thing creatively at a time I think. Plus he is a little bit too much of a control freak to really let the reins go into someone else's hands. I understand he was very excited with Firefly and wanted to explore that new world but he couldn't let Buffy go on without him. Which bums me out to this day. :(

I have learned that the important thing is - if you like an author, TRUST the author. Let them write what they want to write. Am I annoyed that one other author I know abandoned the series I love and is writing another I don't care for? Sure. But there is no percentage in wanting her to move back, as if they don't love it, how good can it be? Echo's Children - "If you don't love what you're making, it will never come to pass." Then there's the various fuss people make on the Bujold email list when she goes off on new series, like the world is ending - I trust her, and each time I have come to dearly love the new worlds she writes.
I expect to thoroughly enjoy the upcoming book. I expect to thoroughly enjoy the next Toby book when it comes out. Write what you love, write what is calling to you to be written, and thank you for sharing it all with us.
