An awkward situation, and a plea.

All right: here's the thing. Discount Armageddon is officially released March 6th. That's the date we've been talking about for months, that's the date you should be able to obtain the book, that's the date when sales begin counting against my first week numbers. Any books which escape into the wild before then count against my overall sales, but do not count for that all-important first week. Also, because I am number-based OCD, any books which escape into the wild before then make me feel sick, cry hysterically, and basically become non-functional with stress. It's THE BEST THING.

As of midnight Monday/the very beginning of Tuesday, Amazon has been shipping copies of Discount Armageddon. Consequentially, Barnes & Noble is doing the same thing. I haven't been saying anything because DAW is trying frantically to fix it, and I didn't want to drive sales to the sites which have chosen to release my book early. (I don't blame B&N for reacting when they saw that the book was on sale; they're a business, after all. But it's not helping my stress level any.) Please, please, do not buy my book early. I know it's hard. I know that the urge to have the shiny thing now is strong within us. I've ordered dolls from Japan and Australia, and DVD sets from Canada and the UK, for just this reason. But those things were legitimately released in the regions where I was ordering them, and Discount Armageddon has not been legitimately released anywhere at all. Please wait until March 6th. Don't punish independent bookstores, and local brick and mortar stores, for some computer's hard-to-fix mistake. Please. I am literally begging you here.

It doesn't help that so much of a book's success is measured by their first week. I've basically thrown up every time I thought about my week one numbers (including just now), because these early sales could mean the difference between a series and an accidental duology. It's unlikely—DAW is very loyal, and they stand by me—but it could happen, and I am very much worst-case-scenario girl when I'm this flipped out. So please. Do not buy early. Wait until March 6th.

And then there are the ebooks.

Both Amazon and B&N have put the physical edition of Discount Armageddon on sale, but are still holding the electronic edition for the actual release date. People who receive their physical books early are reaping the benefits of a fortuitous, author-breaking error. People who have to wait for their electronic books are not being denied anything; they're doing what was supposed to happen in the first place. This has not stopped the exciting emails from rolling in. They mostly stopped after the first day, but on that first day, I was called...

A lot of bad things are behind this cut. If you don't want to see, just go with 'I was called a lot of bad things.'Collapse )

See, apparently, the ebooks are being withheld because I, personally, am trying to force everyone to buy my preferred format (physical). So sexual threats and relentless abuse are totally acceptable, because it just shows me the error of my ways.

I have nothing to do with the books being available early. I wish they weren't.

I have no control over whether the electronic editions are available early. I'm glad they're not, but it's not because I'm a greedy bitch; it's because I don't want any editions available early.

I am literally sick with stress, and this is not in any way helping. Please, don't buy my books before their actual release date. Please, don't place an order with a site which is offering my books before their actual release date. Please, don't call me horrible names because you can't have what you want the second that you want it.

Please.

(Because it must be said...comment amnesty. I'm already crying hard enough.)

Oh holy crap. I'm so sorry that you're receiving this kind of abuse. And eff Amazon right in the ear with a sharp pointy stick for contributing to it!
Thank you.
I'm so sorry Amazon and B&N are putting you through this. I thought I was doing right by ordering another copy from B&N since the site says publication date is the original date, but I got the "shipping soon" email. Thankfully, I was able to cancel the order in time. I'll place a new order on the actual release date. Since I don't need two paper copies, I'll give it to my brother's girlfriend. I tried to get her into October Daye, but she says she can't get into the books. Maybe Incryptid will be her cup of tea.

Meanwhile, my Amazon paper copy just arrived. Out of deference to you, I won't read it unil the publication date, and I'll post what I'm sure will be a glowing review then.

Those people who are being rude are awful, awful human beings.

*hugs* Those who are your real fans will always support you.
Going by Seanan's reply to others elsewhere, I think it's okay for you to go ahead and read it since you have it. :)

I hope you enjoy it lots. I really did!

Thank you for explaining to us what morons the publishers and bookstores are. I will never again pre-order books! I hadn't pre-ordered yours this time because I was feeling financially stretched so I was waiting... and now I'm glad!!

The people who poured out all that hate at you are insane.

March 6th is on my gmail task list.
Actually pre-ordering can be a good thing as it could potentially encourage booksellers to order more copies and publishers to print more books than they were originally planning. Maybe pre-ordering and picking it up in the store the first week is best option?

I've preordered at The Book Depository and they never ship early without permission, not until the publisher says they're good to go. But I did preorder about two months ago, so had they decided to ship early, there would be literally nothing for me to do.
That's probably the case with a lot of other people as well.

Either way, hang in there. We all know the book will be awesome and the first week will go great anyway. :)
Thank you.
My copy shipped as well. I'll be purchasing two copies on the 7th to donate to a local library.
Thank you for this.
I've just placed my pre-order with Amazon UK. Verity will arrive at the correct time and I've ordered two, one for a friend who I'm sure will love it and treat it well.

...I may have messed up, having just re-read your post, but it is still saying that the release date is March 6th. If they come early, I will buy another in the first week, as they are cheap and gorgeous little books. I'm sure my sister would love a copy.

Awful people are awful, I'm sorry you're having such a horrible time. Your first week will go wonderfully, I'm sure.

eta: I have read your post again and feel a complete fool for thinking that Amazon UK would be alright for preordering. I'm really sorry for adding to your stress through my lack of reading comprehension.

Unfortunately I already had it ordered, so I did get it early... but I have two friends who are reading your books, too, I'll make sure they'll buy their own copies during the first week.
Thank you.
AArgh. Dumb people are dumb. Like you have anything to do with when your book hits the wild. This is one of those times I wish for the super power to slap people through the monitor Videodrome style!
If I had that power, my hands would be sore ALL THE TIME.
You have my sympathy for having to endure people who are that ignorant and thoughtless. You can have all of the hugs from me. For what it's worth I think Discount Armageddon will go gang busters. I'm lucky enough to have read an ARC, but I still fully intend on buying a physical copy when I see it down here. My shelves can never have too much Seanan and besides I adore the cover, so having two versions of it is awesome.
Thank you.

<3
Seriously?!?! WHAT THE EVER LOVING HELL PEOPLE!

This! This is why I prefer animals over human beings half the time. JFC!

*hugs, chocolate, massages*

May their crotches be infested with fireants and their arms too short to do anything about it.
That seems a little cruel to the ants.
[HUGE, HUGE HUGS]
Thanks, honey.
*huge hugs*

I somehow missed that this situation was about your book until today & I'm so sorry! People are horrible. Not buying the book until the release date & certainly not blaming you for things beyond your control!

*more hugs*
Thank you.
Send hugs.

Tries to figure out where to get the book that isn't a B&N and is easy to get to. Might wait till Lunacon and hope a dealer has it by then,
Go bug your local library for now - and then get your own copy at Lunacon?

Illegitemi non carborumdum. Don't let the bastards grind you down.

As avid readers, most of us here are self-trained to automatically allow the written word to affect our emotions. When we open a book of fiction we pretty much say to the author "I give permission for your words to affect me. Let me feel thrills, love, fear, hate, compassion, sorrow, joy, accomplishment, satisfaction and more. That is what these books are for." The same thing happens with song lyrics - as the audience, we open ourselves completely to the emotions, whether joyful or ose. So we can be particularly vulnerable when hateful emotions are sent in letters.

As a singer, you already have some tools for dealing with this. You know that if you give yourself entirely over to the emotions WHILE SINGING, you can't effectively sing the song to others. So you let enough come through that you are feeling the emotion and able to convey it to others without letting it overpower you. You filter the emotions, keeping them at a distance.

You need to find that same emotional distance when you receive these hateful letters. Do NOT just automatically give them that All-Access-Pass to your feelings. Hold the emotions at a distance until you have seen what is there. If it's hate, strengthen the barriers and KEEP it at a distance. If it's the genuine affection that you get from the great majority of your fans, waiting to drop the barriers means only the slightest of delays before you can enjoy the good feelings those letters bring.

I haven't pre-ordered. I plan to be in a brick-and-mortar store the first week. I'll be keeping in mind that buying books ahead of time (for future birthday presents, Christmas presents and so on) works quite well. I'll do what I can to make your 1st week numbers be high.

Otherwise - gentle hugs and good thoughts to help you get through such frenetic times.

Thanks, honey.

And I'm not good at denying the All-Access Pass. But I try.
1. I am very, very excited to read Discount Armageddon.

2. I am very, very excited to read Discount Armageddon on March 6th, and I have deliberately not ordered it online because I've seen your posts on this issue before. Instead, I will be walking into a bookstore on March 6th and buying it then and there to make sure the numbers count.

3. I am so, so sorry that this crappy situation is happening to you, and I hope those people eventually realize how terrible they are being. And that is incredibly terrible. I hope they come to their senses and stop, and in the meantime, I hope you know that you have fans who support you and your work.
Thank you very much.
What is wrong with people that they would say that about/to another human being. I'm terribly sorry people have disrespected you, and particularly in such a fashion. Disgusting.

I'm also upset to hear that Amazon/B&N went off half-cocked like that and released books early to your detriment. Pre-orders should count as first week sales, no matter when they release them, in my opinion. That's part of why I do a pre-order. To get the book when it's officially released. If it shows up a day early, I'm happily surprised. But I expect it to count in the author's favor as a release day sale. That it doesn't or might not is frustrating.
I agree with you, but sadly, that isn't how things work right now.
Even if you were actually trying to withhold books? Threats and name calling are Not. Acceptable. Those people don't deserve your books. Grrrr. *wants to bite them all, hard, and non-consensually*
Thank you, honey.
Amazon truly and utterly sucks in this instance.

I had canceled my preorder for them, because they shunted the release date to March 9th at one point, which meant if I wait a day or two more I could try for a purchase at a real store... and now I am glad I did, because I would have gotten the book early. And I want the sale to count towards that first of so important week. I have even been spreading the 'buy in a real bookstore if you can' reasoning to all the people I have been pitching the book to...

I will wait to buy the book until the release date (actually, until the weekend after the release date because of my lack of a bookstore in a reasonable drive. And I will gently remind those who I am trying to get get the book to do the same.
Thank you.
Respected writer

I know it can't block out the bad names, but maybe some good names will balance them out a little? I'm so sorry you are going through this nightmare and then being called bad names on top of it. If I could send you pumpkin muffins and candy corn through the screen, I would.

You are one of my most favorite writers and I look forward to reading all your books, short stories, posts, grocery lists (well, no, not the grocery lists, but almost everything else), and listening to your music for many years to come. You have been a positive influence in my life for the past year. Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
Hey, it's like a meme:

Sweet sharing person
Incredible fable constructor
Awesome singing composer
Fantabulously compelling blogger

Then the next person has to find four words....
And, yes, blot out all that crap because it had NOTHING to do with you, and everything to do with what is wrong inside those asshatty peoples' heads

I'm so sorry, hon. *hugs*
Thank you.
This is unacceptable and morally reprehensible behavior by a group of people determined to prove Spider Robinson right about the idea that "Everyone is an A*****e." And you shouldn't need to deal with it, or accept it. If you're getting actual threats, go here: http://www.haltabuse.org. They've got some guidelines for dealing with them.

And if you like, next time you're in Seattle you and Jenn and I can go to the range and pick out suitable Zombie Targets that are ugly enough to be them, and you can shoot them to pieces. Mwah-hah-hah!
Thank you awfully.
*Big friendly stranger hugs* I got word of this insanity through the con circut. This is not your fault. For my part, I (who have no idea what your book is about) am making a note on my calendar to go buy a copy from our small, locally owned book store on opening day. Hang in there.
Thank you.

I cant believe people said such horrible things to you! What unbelievable jerks! I can understand someone who doesn't know better buying a book before the release date, and I can even understand such a person asking politely why the ebook isn't out yet, but to say those sorts of things to anyone for any reason is unconscionable! You are awesome and one of my favorite people that I don't actually know IRL. I love your books, eagerly awaiting each new release and devouring it the instant it is in my grubby paws. That said, no matter how much I want all of your new books Right Now, I would never knowingly do anything that would jeopardize your ability to keep producing more amazing books. I'll be buying a couple of copies first thing on March 6th.

Quick question that you may not be able to answer, why can't the publisher enforce the release date? I can't imagine this happening with DVDs or the latest gadget from Apple.

Seanan comments elsewhere that release dates just aren't that enforceable; it's been tried.

I think largely because there's only so much recourse you could possibly have, especially with Amazon, who is the 4000 lb. gorilla. There's no kind of criminal penalty, after all, and I can't imagine the size of the fine you could charge them that would even make them notice.

I think you kind of have to be anomalously huge, like the Harry Potter books or something, to have enough leverage to make it stick-- and my impression is that even that leverage is more about the public opinion/outcry than anything.
