An awkward situation, and a plea.

All right: here's the thing. Discount Armageddon is officially released March 6th. That's the date we've been talking about for months, that's the date you should be able to obtain the book, that's the date when sales begin counting against my first week numbers. Any books which escape into the wild before then count against my overall sales, but do not count for that all-important first week. Also, because I am number-based OCD, any books which escape into the wild before then make me feel sick, cry hysterically, and basically become non-functional with stress. It's THE BEST THING.

As of midnight Monday/the very beginning of Tuesday, Amazon has been shipping copies of Discount Armageddon. Consequentially, Barnes & Noble is doing the same thing. I haven't been saying anything because DAW is trying frantically to fix it, and I didn't want to drive sales to the sites which have chosen to release my book early. (I don't blame B&N for reacting when they saw that the book was on sale; they're a business, after all. But it's not helping my stress level any.) Please, please, do not buy my book early. I know it's hard. I know that the urge to have the shiny thing now is strong within us. I've ordered dolls from Japan and Australia, and DVD sets from Canada and the UK, for just this reason. But those things were legitimately released in the regions where I was ordering them, and Discount Armageddon has not been legitimately released anywhere at all. Please wait until March 6th. Don't punish independent bookstores, and local brick and mortar stores, for some computer's hard-to-fix mistake. Please. I am literally begging you here.

It doesn't help that so much of a book's success is measured by their first week. I've basically thrown up every time I thought about my week one numbers (including just now), because these early sales could mean the difference between a series and an accidental duology. It's unlikely—DAW is very loyal, and they stand by me—but it could happen, and I am very much worst-case-scenario girl when I'm this flipped out. So please. Do not buy early. Wait until March 6th.

And then there are the ebooks.

Both Amazon and B&N have put the physical edition of Discount Armageddon on sale, but are still holding the electronic edition for the actual release date. People who receive their physical books early are reaping the benefits of a fortuitous, author-breaking error. People who have to wait for their electronic books are not being denied anything; they're doing what was supposed to happen in the first place. This has not stopped the exciting emails from rolling in. They mostly stopped after the first day, but on that first day, I was called...

...a bitch.
...a whore.
...a cunt.
...stupid.
...greedy.
...ungrateful.
...narcissistic.

All of these were mix-and-match, with "greedy," "bitch," and "cunt" being the most popular. "Greedy bitch" was the most common, followed by "stupid bitch," "greedy cunt," and "stupid whore." One person kindly suggested that sexual violence would be the appropriate response to my forcing Amazon to withhold ebooks. Another offered to slap the stupid out of me. And several stated that they would now be pirating all my books, because I had given up my right to their money (I had a right to their money?).

See, apparently, the ebooks are being withheld because I, personally, am trying to force everyone to buy my preferred format (physical). So sexual threats and relentless abuse are totally acceptable, because it just shows me the error of my ways.

I have nothing to do with the books being available early. I wish they weren't.

I have no control over whether the electronic editions are available early. I'm glad they're not, but it's not because I'm a greedy bitch; it's because I don't want any editions available early.

I am literally sick with stress, and this is not in any way helping. Please, don't buy my books before their actual release date. Please, don't place an order with a site which is offering my books before their actual release date. Please, don't call me horrible names because you can't have what you want the second that you want it.

Please.

(Because it must be said...comment amnesty. I'm already crying hard enough.)

Ugh ugh UGH. People can be THE WORST.

*sends tea and internet hugs and gentle thoughts*
They so, so can.
First - Long distance hugs and my sympathies on you being caught up in a broken system. Just by the way of context, as I understand it the crux of the issue is that Amazon et al has to pay for books based on ship date. Since they don't pre-bill, they don't get that money back until the books are shipped out from them. Thus, it is in their best interest on a large scale to ship books out ASAP when in stock despite what is best for the author to reduce carrying costs.

No one has ever been able to explain to me why the sales rankings don't count pre-ships. I am certain Amazon knows EXACTLY how many they sold regardless of date, it really should not be that hard to get a number where x=all sold up until market date + 7 days...

In the case of stores like Amazon, it's because the potential for abuse is enormous. With a normal bookstore, even if I wanted to "manipulate" my sales, I'd be limited by a stock on hand cap of five or ten, at best. With Amazon, if my credit cards can handle it, I could order five hundred, get the sales bump, and then return them all. So it counts for my Amazon sales ranking, but not for best-seller lists.

I hope some of the jerks who e-mailed you see this and realize they are terrible people. Okay, fine, possibly terrible people who would definite take the gold in jumping to conclusions, if that were an Olympic sport.
I think they are terrible people. There is no good reason ever to call anyone names like that just because of a freakin' two weeks' wait for a goddamn book, no matter how awesome it is, and I would like to slap them all stupid.

Sadly, not so much. :(
I never ever buy a book before the release date. I will buy 2 to help make up for this a smidgy bit! :(
Thank you so much.
Oh, sweet flaming angels, what the hell is wrong with people!

*hugsyoutightly* I'm sorry , honey. Call me if you need to.
I don't even.

But I want to IGNITE THE BIOSPHERE.
I'm sorry that people are awful.

I'm really eager for your book. I'm a grown-up, I can wait two weeks.
Thank you for that.
This article makes me really sad. Believe me. I understand the need for your books. My best friend and I are fighting our collective impulse to purchase and feed our brains your delicious words, but to do so at the expense of the rest of a good series and our favorite author's lively hood would be a sin. I really hope everything gets resolved quickly. Good luck, dearest.
Thank you.
What is wrong with people? Seriously. Where does threatening harm to anyone come in? I'd comment on the lack of understanding, except the threats make me too damn angry to care about that.
This.

Probably doesn't even occur to these asshats that not all ebook rights are sold or executed. (Kind of like international rights; publishers can acquire French or German rights, but you can't assume there will be international editions. AND, just because rights are acquired does not mean the book will exist.)

Same thing here, planning on buying first week. I learned this from you actually, now wherever an author I like has a new book, I get it from a store the week of release. All the better to support the people who give me nifty worlds to read about.

And never never will call you names. Other than Machete Queen.
Thank you, honey.
AUGH! That is SO HORRIBLE. I'm so so sorry you have to deal with this.

I can't fucking believe those assholes writing to you. I wish I could punt them through a walllllll.
I wish you could, too.
I'm really sorry. I pre-ordered months ago, and just realized Amazon shipped it yesterday. :( I'm going to try to get B&N to order me a second physical copy in-store for the release week, then. Incidentally, I believe Amazon also sent out emails saying the print release would be *delayed* until March 6 (following up by declaring that it'd ship "on time" after all), which may be one reason why people are confused about the real release date.

Which does not in ANY WAY justify the assholes writing you these things, and I only wish every single person who did found themselves inexplicably without internet access for a year. What the fuck is wrong with people.

(My wife's publisher is having problems with Amazon not making the e-book version of several books available on the release date. If only they could average the two horrendous glitches out.)
I AK also sorry, as I believe Amazon has shipped my physical copy as well. I pre ordered not realizing that it would be sent early. I didn't mean to damage your sales. If I can, I will buy another copy for a gift. And I am also sorry people are being mean jerks to you.

Ugh. Looks like some of the drivers on the information superhighway are due for having their licenses revoked.

For those of us in the habit of learning months in advance about a book we want to read and preordering it, do those preorders get tallied in a useful bucket that will lead to publishers being encouraged to commission the sequel? (I have an electronic preorder waiting, and will presumably be able to download it in March 6. But if publishers don’t count that, I could always start putting book publishing dates in Remember the Milk and buying them when the alarm goes off.)
They do. I promise.
Good lord.

I think the publisher system is broken then, if they won't count actual book sales ahead of official release date or enforce the official release date against booksellers.
Those sales count as "sales happened," but all entertainment industries have become "big opening weekend." Think about ET. It wasn't #1 at the box office. It grew. It acquired word-of-mouth. Those days are over, and only ticket sales in the first weekend seem to count for a movie.

Books aren't quite as bad, but we get some of it. All best seller lists are snapshots of one week periods. Usually, week one is your strongest, because that's when your existing fans go OMG GIMME. So people buying books two weeks early? My publisher sees that I made those sales. The best seller lists don't. (DAW is very good to me, and very loyal. And I'm already an NYT bestseller. But if this were my first book? I would literally be fetal from sobbing.)

It's impossible to enforce shelf dates. It's been tried.

Oh, dear ghods. Seanan, I am sad and dismayed that Amazon and B&N have pulled this shit. It's wrong, they know it's wrong, and they Just Don't Care. I wish that I still had an independent bookseller in my city, but I don't.

However, I will obtain my copies at my local bricks-and-mortar B&N, ON OR AFTER MARCH 6, so that the purchases will count toward your first-week numbers and the Knoxville B&N will continue to stock your books. Come to think of it, I think I'll split my purchases between B&N and Hastings, so they will both continue to stock your books.

And while I'm enough of a NeoPagan not to directly threaten anyone, I think it's well within the letter and the intent of the Rede to say, "I sincerely hope the Universe takes note of the asshats who think abusing you over a third-party error is appropriate behavior, and gives them reason to learn otherwise."
Hey--you're in Knoxville? I'm about an hour out of town but I buy my books there because it's closest. I bet our copies are coming in at the same B&N :-)

Thank you.
Wow. I'm disabled which is the only reason why I literally buy everything from Amazon. I was actually incredibly surprised when I opened my vita box and found the book inside. I didn't realize at all what a huge upsetting disaster this is for you (and now I regret all my twitter comments (@merikay) because I thought you were just concerned about us liking the book vs that it could potentially screw you). I have closed the book, initiated a return to Amazon, and will have my roommate pick me up a copy from the local Mr. Paperback.

I'm really sorry. No fan should ever speak to you that at all. People are so selfish and stupid. The author rarely controls anything in these situations and they should be taking up their problems with Amazon and Barnes and Nobles NOT you. And name calling doesn't get you jack shit. If you were "secretly withholding" the books, calling you horrid names is not going to make you "see reason" at all.
I'm really, really concerned about people liking the book, too. But this whole situation has just been a horrible, stressful mess. My "good week" ended Monday, when I ran out of pigeon dating sim walk throughs.

Thank you for trying to help. I really appreciate it.
I posted about your plight on my G+ account--for info on the book I directed them here : http://www.fantasybookcafe.com/2011/11/books-of-2012-discount-armageddon-by-seanan-mcguire/. I requested they not purchase before 3/6, but if they have (or must), to purchase again on 3/6 and donate to charity. I did not name the retailers that were allowing purchase ahead of time to avoid sending people there to buy the book.

If this is okay with you, maybe your many minions can do similar things? I adore your writing, but I also think you're quite swell and I'd prefer if you weren't sick with stress. If this stresses you out more, I will take it down immediately.
I'll gladly share your G+ post, if you don't mind my adding you and clicking "share."

:'( I'm so sorry for the shitty situation you are caught up in. I want your book so bad but I won't buy it early. I can't believe how horrible people can be. We are all here for you. Your loyal readers love you and want you to feel better. Please don't worry and stress yourself and make yourself sick. It'll be okay. <3Your books are too wonderful not to sell like crazy when the actual release date drops. I'm even going to be reading your book before I play Mass Effect 3 which comes out the same day.
Thank you so much. And dude, I rank above ME3?

Now I feel the love.

*offers e-hugs* I'm waitin' till I see the Real Announcement. (And glad I didn't pre-order for my mom.)

I hope that even if your official "first week" is lowered because of this, that DAW will have the sense evolution gave little green gooseberries and make note of the first two weeks. O:(

I also hope that karma runs over the people being mean to you, backs up, and runs over them again.
I think they will. DAW is good that way.
Fuck, I am an idiot--I thought this Tues. was the release and I ordered it, thinking nothing was screwy.
So, I am going to order some extra copies on the release date and give them as prezzies, cause...shit.

Also, I am sorry people were total fuckers to you and I want to give you a Hello Kitty chainsaw or a glittery sharp purple machete to make up for it.
*HUGS*

Thank you. <3

And even the thought of a chainsaw cheers me.
i was reading your tweets:( so sorry this is happening. The release of your book and what looks like a FABULOUS new series should be a time of celebration. I can't believe that people who want to read your writing, your "fans"???? are treating you like that. I hope your publisher can stop this.
I do, too.

*hugs*

You are not horrible; if anyone is horrible, it's the chronologically-challenged people at Amazon who decided to ship early, and the tantrum-throwers who are being nasty to you. I'm very sorry you're getting hassled for something that is not under your control. I really wonder what, exactly, people who post threats and menaces expect to get from their targets anyway?

I'm still waiting until the actual date to drive to B&N and buy a copy. It's been on my calendar for a while now, and I am not going to be tempted to change my plan by anything.
FWIW, I called my local B&N to reserve a copy to make sure they didn't run out.

seanan_mcguire

That is vile and disgusting and people suck. *scowl*
Agreed.
WHAT THE FUCK IS FUCKING WRONG WITH PEOPLE.

Huh, and that's a bizarre Amazon error. I think the same thing happened with Timeless.

Comment amnesty, I know, but I do have a question: Amazon numbers do not count toward the NYT Bestseller list, but they do count toward sales, correct? So buying on Amazon now versus waiting to buy on Amazon later does not affect your chances making the NYT list, but it does affect your all-important first-week sales numbers?

And because it needs to be said again: WHAT THE FUCK IS FUCKING WRONG WITH PEOPLE.
I think the same thing happened with Timeless.

It did. I preordered Timeless because I had a B&N gift card (which I also used to buy the first two Newsflesh books, but anyway), expecting to wait patiently for several days after the official release date, as is my custom - and the box arrived today. Had I but known... I plan to buy another copy of Timeless next week for my Aged Mum, but still, it's highly annoying.
