It helps to know that they're not poisonous and they can't sting, the worst they can do is bite you and even that doesn't actually hurt.

The exceptions in New Zealand being the katipo spider (which is rare) and the kea (which is a parrot and not poisonous but is fearfully bright and prone to destroying things to see how they work...things up to and including automobiles,tv aerials and lambs)
