Nominations and new years and stuff.

So first off, I'm not dead. I am, however, home from Disney, and coping with my own flare-up of food poisoning, which haunted my party during our Disney World adventure. Getting sick on the plane is awesome! But anyway...

It's award eligibility season! Nominations are now open for both the Nebulas and the Hugos. Nebula nominations are open until February 15th for SFWA members only. Hugo nominations are open until March 11th, and to quote the website: "Nominations are open to members of the current year's Worldcon, the members of the past year's Worldcon, and, starting with the 2012 Hugo Awards, the members of the following year’s Worldcon." This means that if you had a membership to Renovation, you are eligible to nominate. If you didn't, you have until January 31st to purchase a membership for Chicon if you want nominating as well as voting rights on this year's ballot.

Anyway, this is what I did in 2011. If you are eligible to nominate, please consider these works, as well as many others by many awesome people.

Novel:

Late Eclipses
One Salt Sea
Deadline (as Mira Grant)

Novella:

Countdown (as Mira Grant)

Novelette:

Through This House

Short Story:

"The Tolling of Pavlov's Bells."
"Gimme a 'Z'!"
"The Alchemy of Alcohol."
"Apocalypse Scenario #683: The Box." (as Mira Grant)
"Riddles."
"Uncle Sam."
"Cinderella City."
"Crystal Halloway and the Forgotten Passage."

Of these short stories, many of which I am very proud of, "The Tolling of Pavlov's Bells" can be read for free at Apex Magazine, "Uncle Sam" can be read for free at The Edge of Propinquity, and "Crystal Halloway and the Forgotten Passage" can be read for free at Fantasy Magazine (soon to merge with Lightspeed Magazine, which may change the way they archive things, I don't know).

Best Related Work:

Wicked Girls

I'm serious. According to the Hugo website, this category is..."Awarded to a work related to the field of science fiction, fantasy, or fandom, appearing for the first time during the previous calendar year or which has been substantially modified during the previous calendar year. The type of works eligible include, but are not limited to, collections of art, works of literary criticism, books about the making of a film or TV series, biographies and so on, provided that they do not qualify for another category." I believe that filk albums would thus be "related works," not dramatic presentations. Also, the idea cracks me up.

Best Fancast:

The SF Squeecast, in which I babble about all things awesome with Paul Cornell, Cat Valente, Elizabeth Bear, and Lynne Thomas.

I think that's everything. 2011 was amazing for me, publication-wise, and I am so happy and so pleased that all of you were there with me. And now, to quote the lovely Cat, who reminded me to make this post myself...

Quoth Cat: "A final note: you do not have to go to Worldcon to nominate and vote for the Hugos. You can buy a supporting membership for $50 and get that perk. I realize $50 is a lot to express an opinion, but every year we hear complaints about the ballot and every year I hope that my generation will vote a little more, because the Hugos are kind of a bellwether for the field, and I want new crackly risktaking goodness in there, too. Since I have no control over the price of the supporting membership all I can say is—give it a thought, if you have the scratch."

So if you have the funds and you want the voice, consider it. You could be a part of science fiction history.

Happy New Year!

Having Wicked Girls in the "Best Related Work" category reminds me of having Frank Hayes at a con as Artist GoH :) Yes, it worked out very well!
See? It can be done!
Also, if you pony up the $50, you get many of the nominated works in .epub format, as well as the opportunity to vote. It's a really good bargain, especially with prices for ebooks inching upwards.
True. I think last year's voter packet was like $150-worth of books and stories when you added it all together. Not bad for $50 and the ability to vote (and hence the right to whine if you don't get the results you want).

happy new year and - if LJ is to be believed - happy birthday :)
Not yet!
Sympathies on the food poisoning. It was how I celebrated New Year's Day myself. Glad you're feeling better.
Me, too. I'm glad you're done with it as well!
Feel better soon.
Thank you!
Hope you feel better soon!
Me, too.

Mind telling me where I can find the SF Squeecast? It sounds extremely relevant to my interests.
Google says it's here.

May the year only get better from here. :-)
Agreed. :)
hmm... Wicked Girls for Best related work... I like that idea and it does work better than dramatic presentation.
In the meantime, given some of the other things that have been nominated in the category, it would seem that any filk concert could be considered eligible for Dramatic Presentation.

So any of Seanan's concerts (e.g. GAFilk 2011), Wild Mercy's FKO 2011 GOH set, Tricky Pixie's Worldcon concerts, or any other rockin' filk set from the year could be nominated.

Bought my supporting membership this morning!

I'm hoping Whedonistas gets a nod, after the success of its sister anthology. I love the idea of "Wicked Girls" qualifying in the Best Related Work category. So much goodness there!
Woo!
Sick on the plane?
Soooo not good.

The time that happened to me (migraine), small children were playing keep-out with both the bathrooms.
Luckily I managed to grab an attendent *just in time* to ask for a bag.
Unluckily she asked me me what kind, and suddenly it was too late.
Fail

But then seemingly dozens of attendants came around and put on ORANGE HAZMAT SUITS for the clean-up.
They were actually all cracking up about having just done official training.
So I felt like less of an idiot.
(Though still wanted to die, migraines being like that).

Food poisoning is really awful.
Charcoal tablets can sometimes help.
Or not.
Sometimes it is just time and no food.

Other than that, I hope the trip was awesome.
Oh, honey. :(

The trip was amazing; I'll post about it later. Now you feel better, too!
So although you can nominate more than one item in each category. Would it be sporting to try and make sure that where you have more than a couple of works eligible in a category that we didn't all vote for different stories.

I would happily set up a doodle ( http://www.doodle.com/ ) ?

But I like the idea of Wicked Girls as "Best related work"
I think it's sporting, it's just not something that I can do myself, you know?
I got myself some more reading to do, I see. As for food poisoning... That's why my wife spent an enchanting Christmas Eve at John Muir's ER. Much more comfortable than if it had been on a plane. For an elastic definition of 'comfortable'...
I spent one Christmas night with food poisoning. At least, it seems to have been food poisoning because nobody else got sick. The worst part was going in for a "find out what the baby is" ultrasound two days later, having to drink all of that water, and telling the attendant that I was going to be way under-reactive because I still felt like I'd been hit with a steamroller. No, the worst part was that night on the vinyl flooring in the bathroom, too cold and unable to get back into bed for more than half a minute.

I, too, suffered from a bout of food poisoning over my Christmas break. Oh, bacon-wrapped scallops, I loved you so. Why have you betrayed me?

Anyway. I hope you're all recovered and can eat real food again, and, yay! You're back!
I ate SO MUCH POPCORN once the puking stopped. It was EPIC POPCORN TIME.

Get well soon!
Thank you!
OH CRAP YOU GOT SICK??? D: Do not ever want. :( :( :(

Get better soon, cause I want to hear all about your trip.
Promise!
Interestingly enough, I discovered your books through last year's Hugos and became an instant fan. The $50 convention pack is TOTALLY worth it.
Agreed! I wish more people focused on that, because it's amazing.
Just heads-up, the Apex website doesn't appear to have free to read archives anymore - all I can find is the option to buy issues.
Really? Damn.
When Windycon issued a filk CD back in 2002, it wound up receiving its nominating votes in the Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form category.
Good to know.
ummm
about that food poisoning...

there's an icky stomach flu bug going around.. one of the comments mentions Florida.

Yup, it was a viral party.

Bah.
