Mama said girl, you gonna drive me to drinkin'...

So last night, my body decided it was time to hit the shiny red STOP button on my life, by bringing on a bell-clanging migraine of the sort that I only have once or twice a year. I went to bed at six o'clock, figuring I'd sleep until eight or nine, and have trouble going to bed, but feel much better. Instead, I slept until seven the next morning, and woke up groggy, dehydrated, and feeling faintly like I'd been hit by a truck.

Needless to say, I did not go into the office today.

Instead, I have done ALL THE WORK here at home, and written ALL THE WORDS, in-between unplanned naps and episodes of Criminal Minds. I'm on season three now, which is very comforting and reassuring. By season three, most shows have found their feet, settled in for the long haul, and stopped shifting their perspectives without warning. It's a nice place to be. And serial killers make me feel better.

I'm hammering away on Midnight Blue-Light Special, hoping to buy myself Sunday as a free day for processing edits on Ashes of Honor, since every little bit counts. I'm also working on the page proofs for Discount Armageddon, and writing another John/Fran story set decades before the start of the series. Literally decades; they're the parents of the POV character's grandmother. It's one of my favorite universes, because it's both very open and accessible, and very close and snug. I love that sort of narrative contradiction.

The cats have loved this last day. Thirteen hours in bed, followed by hours and hours without leaving the house? Feline bliss. They'd be happier if I would feed them more than twice, but right now, they're taking what they can get, and what they're getting is my total attention. I'm a little vexed about today being a no-mail holiday, since I wanted to both send and receive mail. Since I didn't make it outside, I should probably let the vexation go.

And that's my Friday. Hope you're all gearing up to an amazing weekend!

I look at your subject line and wonder how many Bill Kirchen MP3s you have.
Enough.

I'm glad to hear that the sick day didn't completely ruin your ability to work/entertain yourself. I know your post dental day was very miserable.
I too missed my mailman today, but at least USPS still works Saturdays.
I mostly just needed to sleep, I think. I hate it when my body enforces it like this, but I'm learning to listen.

I am gearing up for a very sleep filled, morphine induced coma of a weekend. (whee)

Lysystratae (@mish103 on twitter) and her new hubby came to spend several days with Mom, the Boy and I/us. We had an incredible time, the new hubby and I teaming up to tease Misha, everyone teasing The Boy(tm), and Mom getting to see Misha, who lived with us for nearly 20 years and is a like a daughter to her.

Only downside...I reused my pain management schedule while they were here. cause I wanted as must time as possible with them just in case I don't win this time. So...I'm back on the meds and pretending to be a awake right now. heh
Get some sleep, and feel better. :(
Migraines are not fun. :(

My plans for the weekend are my writing workshop and the anarchist bookfair. Hopefully I won't get arrested.

Oh, and Kent is blaming you for his zombie dreams.
Tell Kent he's welcome. :)
Well, at least the cats are happy about your Friday... (And I can hardly complain about anything involving ALL THE WORDS.) I hope that your weekend is excellent!
Yours, too!
Aww
It was just a cold wet and nasty day anyway, and work is overrated.
Pooh on it all.
Pile on another cat and have some tea.

Migraines are the absolute worst things ever.
Agreed.
My sympathies on the migraine - those suck. I'm glad it sounds as though you were able to make a productive day out of it, though. I hope your body treats you better the rest of the weekend.
It did, thank you!
I just discovered Criminal Minds during my enforced period away from the internet, when I had to watch TV. In the same way that whatever cable channel out there shows nothing but Law and Order episodes, Ion (65-1 in the Bay Area) seems to show nothing but CM.

Good stuff, and I now have an unashamed crush on Paget Brewster. (I can even force myself to pretend to remember what Wikipedia calls her "short-lived Bay Area talk show", but that may really be complete delusion on my part.)
Hee.

Awesome.
As a fellow migraineur, you have my complete sympathy. It is amazing how much cat cuddling can help though.

And yay for getting up to Season 3 on CM. If you can squeeze the time into your extremely busy schedule, I recommend reading matociquala's lj for her reviews. If you click on her geeks with guns tags, that should take you to all the reviews.

And Paget Brewster is my giant girl crush. I would totally bat for the other team for her.
I have her LJ open in a tab on my Firefox, and I'm reading each review after I finally watch the episode. :) It's fun!

Yikes! Sometimes you just need to sleep it off, whatever "It" happens to be.

I don't get migraines, but I do get barometric headaches occasionally--they kick in when there's a storm coming. It's weird.

Don't work too hard. Have a great weekend, and feel better!
Apparently, what I was sleeping off was "insufficient sleep."
Office. Office? Wait, there is something I don't know here.

Interesting how our bodies will sometimes say "Enough!" and put us down for a count. Hope you're all recovered now even if it means the kitties will have to leave Nirvana.
I have a full-time day job.
I have seen an article—somewhere on this damned internet—on migraine sufferers who have successfully used ice cream headaches to short-circuit migraines. The idea is that whatever an ice-cream headache does to the blood vessels in your brain, it's directly counter to what a migraine does to them.

I suggest this to every personage who deals with migraines on the idea that it can't hurt to try, and if it doesn't work, hey, ice cream!
Ice cream makes EVERYTHING better.
Sorry about the migraine; glad it's over.

Oddly, I did something similar that day. I didn't feel bad, but I simply Could. Not. Stay. Awake. For 16 straight hours worth of Not Awake. My body sometimes does that to fight off a bug, but there was no sign of any.

Hmmmm -- perhaps we (& presumably the rest of the con) were exposed to a bioengineered sleeping sickness at OVFF & the latency period has expired. Might be a good idea to alert the CDC...
Sadly, the CDC is sleeping...
Whoa! I went to take a nap at 5:30 last night and woke up about an hour ago. It's spreading!

I am impressed that you managed to get work done.
Soon, we will ALL go to sleep!
I had a giant red STOP button moment yesterday as well. I was feverish and achy most of the day, so I ended up taking some NyQuil at about 7pm. And then proceeded to sleep for FOURTEEN HOURS. *thud*

Hooray for ALL THE WORDS. And sleep. Sleep is a goodness.
Sleep is a total goodness. Hooray for sleep!
I have trouble admitting that serial killers make me feel better, but they do. When I worked tech support, I spent months reading all the articles on Crime Library about serial killers in between calls. It's disturbing, but reassuring when you see them get caught.

Hope you feel better today!
Exactly!

I feel ever so much better. And more alert.
Hope you are feeling better today!
Thank you!
Hah! I am always rather thrilled to hear that people whose taste I respect have come to enjoy Criminal Minds too. I've been something of an evangelist for that show, hooking anyone I can get to sit still in front of the TV. For the last couple of years, it's been the only show which I will bother making the effort to catch on live broadcast.

Yeah, so babblage aside, this has been your moment of Criminal Minds Clue-fan-girl squeeage for the evening. You may now return to your regularly scheduled real life.

*Beep*
It makes me happy. :)
The cats may be happy if you fed them hourly, but then they'd probably complain that you woke them up from a really nice nap.
True!
This was a day off? Hope you're feeling better!
My definitions are not like your earth definitions.
Needless to say, I did not go into the office today.

Instead, I have done ALL THE WORK here at home

You have an office? Does this mean you have a dayjob on top of your writing?
Yup. Forty hours a week.
Well, I just spent the weekend at Hal Con (local science fiction weekend) so I had a good time and am trying to catch up now. I hope you've had more than sufficient time to recover from your migraine.
I have, thank you!
