Welcome to our house of cats, creepy dolls, and swearing.

So there's been a huge influx of people over the course of the past few days—hello, people!—and while I expect that the majority will leave again when it becomes clear that discussion of sweeping social issues is less common around here than discussion of that cute thing my cats did, some of the new folks will probably stick around. Welcome! A few things you ought to know...

1. My name is Seanan; I'm an urban fantasy author. My name is also Mira Grant; I'm a science fiction author. Both of my personas write other things, but those are mostly what we're known for. As Seanan, I won the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. As Mira, my first book, Feed, was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2011. I put out three books a year. I don't sleep.

2. I have cats. I'm not currently blogging about them much, because there was some unpleasant mail that I'm still calming down from, but they are a huge part of my life, and my word count posts include a note about where the cats are. All my cats came from reputable breeders. I believe in supporting both animal rescue and healthy, responsible breeding.

3. I watch a lot of television. Like, a lot of television. However much you're thinking, it's probably not enough. During the fall, my DVR is a sad, overworked little monkey that deserves lots and lots of treats. Given a choice between sleeping and watching television, the TV wins. Thankfully, writing is like TV for my brain, so I manage to meet my deadlines.

4. I collect toys. Specifically, I collect classic 1980s My Little Ponies, Monster High, interesting plush, the occasional totally awesome vinyl figure, and dolls from Wilde Imagination (Evangeline Ghastly and Ellowyne Wilde). As I type this, a Beautiful Nightmare Evangeline and a Blithe Spirit Ellowyne are sitting on my desk. It is very difficult to hang out in my room if you have issues with creepy dolls watching everything that you do.

5. I try to answer every comment posted on one of my entries, although not necessarily every comment posted on a thread. This can take a while. Please have patience with me.

I have a free friending policy, and a permanent unfriending amnesty. You don't need to tell me, either way. :) Again, welcome, and I'm glad you're here.

I friended cause I love your Mira Grant stuff and because of the sweeping social issue discussions; I'll stay for the cats. ;)
They are EXCELLENT cats.
Not actually a big fan of sweeping social issue posts (not that I don't care, it's just the outrage fatigue...) But, I followed a link and saw that you seem to have had the same sort of childhood as me, which is pretty rare in my current circles, so of course I had to friend you.

Looking forward to the cat posts.
you will <3 the cat posts.

Yes -- I came by because of the recent thingum (that's a technical term), but I read back a page or so before I put you on my flist. So no warnings needed!

Looking forward to the cat posts too. (And I hope the disturbing and stalker-y mails are in the past. Shiver.)
They haven't happened in a little while, but I'm still gun-shy about posting pictures.
It was sort of coincidence that I had just found you had this blog, right after reading Artificial Night, at the same time that several people on know on Lj linked to your last post.

I am all for more cats.
I love the kitty in your icon!

I came by because of your fascinating posts, and I also love reading about writing and social issues, but also because of the creeping suspicion that I know you virtually from somewhere.

Nice to meet you!
Nice to meet you, too!

I'm happy to have you as an LJ-friend. I don't have much to say to you, mainly because I'm in awe of your success as a published author, but I read your posts with interest and if anything needs to be said I will. You do good in supporting animal rescue. They suffer no less for not having speech.

Welcome. :)
I joined because I am a fan of both your authorial personas, and I was lucky enough to meet you at Worlcon in Melbourne and thought you were a groovy chick with a thing for orange :)

Didnt know you had an LJ - found the link via the recent round of posts and added you.

I will stick around :)
Hooray!
I came because of the fantastic books, poked around because of the cats and the social issues, and will stay because of the books - nothing quite like a fat paperback that you've been waiting forEVER to get your hands on.
Brilliant. :)
1. hi Seanan, i'm Filomena. i'm a reader of fantasy and occasional reader of sci-fi. i kind of read everything though, but never finish what i don't enjoy. i sleep all the time, i love it. not sleeping makes me unstable, and i've been known to cause bodily harm to others (never myself, where's the fun in that?) when i don't get the required 7 hrs minimum. i used to blame my sleeping habits on being a Leo, which i knew was bullshit, but gave me an excuse and i don't even have that bullshit excuse anymore. i can't think without sleep and people who don't sleep are incredibly romantic and mysterious to me, like idk. i think that's the root of their chaotic creative madness, that because they don't sleep they're always on some kind of mental edge or something.

2. i have cats, too and i'd tell you their names, but then i'd probably sound pretentious and the truth is that i actually call them by the family made-up endearment (variations on "Cuca" or "Tinker"). i love cats, they know how to need and beg for attention without looking pathetic. that's a great quality in an animal.

3. i watch some tv, but the tv i do watch i'm kind of obsessed about and get very involved with. it's very sad, i'm sure.

4. i collect books, but only certain kinds of books. like, if i love a book they become part of my family and so i want to have them around me and i buy different editions and copies and i give them out to my friends because friends should be introduced to family, at least to the family you're not totally ashamed of.

i feel kind of awkward saying this, but i came over 'cause i just finished reading "Feed" and loved it and tried to find something similar out there, but realized there was nothing else out there like it (i've downloaded Deadline on my ipad-- yes, i'm one of those). so i started watching zombie flicks and political thrillers in tandem. going back and forth from Dawn of the Dead and the BBC ORIGINAL version of State of Play to remain in Feed-world didn't quite do it for me, i gotta say. though i do think McAvoy is a great hawty (and Polley is one fierce bitch).

5. cool.
McAvoy is GORGEOUS.

Welcome!
I've been reading you on here for a little now, found this after I got to see you on a bunch of panels at ConText, and thought you were made of awesome. Found your blog, and that's rather reinforcing it. And since this is a 'welcome' sort of post, thought this was a proper place to say hello. "Hello." Presently devouring One Salt Sea, and looking forward to, well, everything else from you in the future.
Hello!
Those dolls are defintely *not* creepy. They are absolutely exquisite. I've bookmarked the site and my money will soon be gone.

I adore the cat posts. But then, I adore cats. I remember you from long ago at, I believe, DunDraCon, where you introduced us to Anders, who introduced us to Over The Edge. We were the couple with the two kittens. If you don't remember, it's okay. I've loved following your success. It's richly deserved.
KITTENS!

I remember the kittens! YAY KITTENS. Also yay humans, but mostly, I remember kittens.
I wanted to say a GOOD thing about reputable breeding of cats.
I just lost my darling, a four-year old feral rescue kitty.
i mostly have ended up with former ferals in recent times - not a matter of principle, just how it has happened.
Poor Boe kitty was the best boy ever.
It was not his fault that there was something terribly, terribly wrong somewhere with his body.
He wasn't a year old when his kneecaps started disintegrating.
The vets never did figure that one out.
He wasn't yet two when he came down with a kitty cancer that normally strikes at a median age of 12.
(Seriously, I had a vet call me a liar when I brought Boe in for antibiotics, but then she consulted his records and apologized, explaining at length how utterly impossible it was.)
Hard luck kitty had my heart, and the best short life I could give him.
I miss him madly, but damn am I ever sorry for the both of us for having gone through all this.
I wish he'd been an intentionally bred kitty, with a long and comfortable life before him.
But if the only kittens that are "correct" to give homes to are mystery kittens whose parents were scraping a living on the streets, then some of them, logically, will not be getting that good a start in life.
Like poor Boe.
I'll never regret having given him my best, but surely there's nothing wrong with having happy healthy intentional kittens.
Every kitty deserves love, no matter how they come into the world. <3

I'm curious what some of your favourite shows are, since you watch so much! I tend to watch shows in huge chunks, often while doing artsy things, but I'm constantly running out and I watch more tv than anyone I know, so recommendations are rather lacking.

I wish I could choose anything over sleep!! Other than curling up in a sunbeam for a nap - which is no longer possible now that the summer sun isn't shining onto my bed for a couple hours every day :( - I feel sleep is a giant waste of time. Running joke amongst my friends is that I'm narcoleptic, however, as if I'm not thoroughly engaged I tend to Pass The Fuck Out at nearly any given opportunity. I've fallen asleep against the speaker at a punk show, in a concert, in movies, at parties.. It's bad. I hate it. At least I have entertaining dreams though.
I should make a vast long "what I am watching this season" post, because those are always amusing.

I used to sleep like that. I sometimes miss it.

As this looks to have become an unofficial introduction thread: I friended your journal in delight of your well-spoken posts on a wide range of subjects.

I no longer have the immense powers of promotion that I used to wield as the owner of The Stars Our Destination bookstore, but I still follow emerging (and continuing) writing careers with fascination, and do what I can to help keep the signal higher than the noise.

Thanks for posting!
Hi-i, Alice! I have known you ages. :)

Thanks for being here!
Hi Seanan! We met briefly a couple of times at WisCon this year (fair haired British chap.) My review of Feed is up at www.bookzombieblog.com.

Looking forward to getting around to Deadline, though I'm Carl Brandon Award reading at the moment so my it may take a little while. My wife, pennski, has already read it so there might be a guest review on my blog at some point...

Never be ashamed of talking about your cats (though I sympathise with your reluctance right now seeing your previous posts.)
I remember you! And I'm not ashamed, just...antsy, given the crazy, you know?

Hello! Yeah, I read the ebooks thing, but that really just put me on to the fact you had an LJ. Loved Rosemary and Rue, Feed is my next book to be read.

I saw you win the Campbell in Melbourne last year!
Oh, yay!
If it helps, I added you to my flist because I love both the Toby Day and Newsflesh series but only found the lj due to someone linking up the latest social justice crisis. ;)
Excellent all around.
I'm vaguely connected (at a "hung out on MidgardMOO in college then stayed friends" way) to several of the Agora people, and thus have meant to start following your journal for ages, so the Suddenly Popular Post just reminded me to finally do that. :)
Brilliant.
Heyas! I just found you via another LJ friend post. There is nothing wrong with posting about cats~~Cats are Cool! My partner, jmthane and I have five~~four Maine Coons (acquired from a friend who's purebloods didn't listen to her mating schedule) and one Ragdoll. They're all a bunch of clowns who do a Yeoman's job in keeping me entertained throughout the day. Responsible breeders are a joy and should be supported, and so should those rescue organizations who try to care for the others.

My partner and I are very much involved in parrot rescue, so you might wind up seeing a pic or two of our feathered brats along the way. *grin*

Have a wonderful day!
I am SO IN FAVOR of parrots. Don't have one, love looking at them. I had an affair with a parrot named Ernie once (he brought me treats, sang to me, and groomed my hair, and pined when I didn't come over).

Welcome!
The post about books and social issues was just a good excuse for getting around to looking at your journal. I've come to the conclusion that if I don't want to miss books I want to read, I need to have more contact with authors. No matter how much I complained about the local Borders store, it was better than nothing for helping me see what was available. Now I have to know what I want so that I can go looking for a place to buy it.

Cats are also a good subject. I have three of them. Two are currently on my desk trying to help me use the computer and the third is at my feet vocally telling me that my attention is in the wrong place.
KITTIES.

I love people with kitties. It's awesome.
http://rebeccaenzor.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/custom-of-the-week-neytiri/ Contest to win a custom-made My Little Pony. You design it, and it gets made! :-)
I first encountered your work in the Hugo packet, and felt that your offering was the best of the year's crop. I went to one of your panels at Renovation and was struck by how facile your speech was—I'm a theater junkie who works in radio, and I know how very, very rare that ability is. Truth be told, most of our radio talents—even the ones who are considered top-quality—do not have that ability.

I went to the Masquerade and predicted your win at Just a Minute based on the one panel I'd been to. (Hey, everyone, if you've got a spare hour, watch that link. I haven't laughed so hard in years.) Then I got to Vanna at the Hugos.

So—that's the extent of what I know of you. I will be looking up your urban fantasy, though that's going to take a while as they just closed the only bookstore in town. And I look forward to kitty posts.

As for me, I'm fairly normal for weird. And I am always impressed with anyone who has the potential to out-talk my family, even if they shall never meet my family. :)
P.S. Just looked up "facile" to be sure I had the correct definition and I mean the secondary meaning—easy, effortless. Not the first, which is apparently "trite."

I have been reading the October Day series for a while and I am definitely a fan but only recently discovered that you have an LJ:) Those dolls you like, wow!!! My dd is a big AG doll fan but she was drooling on the keyboard today when we looked at the red headed Ellowyne doll (the ones in designer jeans:)) in the spring catalog. Even I had a moment of desire for the amelia thimble doll.
By the way, my daughter's name is Toby.
What a great name!
