ONE SALT SEA open thread!

To celebrate the release of One Salt Sea, here. Have an open thread to discuss the book.

I think that Luideag is going to have Toby shift the Selkie's blood so they're Roane, which would mean that anyone without a skin is stuck being human.

Also, I went through and re-read all the old books and think I figured a bunch of stuff out. One of the more far-fetched guesses is that Simon is Toby's dad. I think this because Oleander talks about Amandine having taken something from Simon, and that that made him Oleander's to break - what she took could have been herself and Toby. And then she was changing Toby's blood to hide/protect her.

I think that at some point in the future we're going to have to deal with the missing Kings and Queens (which is hinted at strongly... especially with Toby saying that someone's going to have to find them, but she wasn't that crazy.) I also think that Toby is going to have to find her mom and fix whatever is making her crazy, or at least find out about it.

Seanan has said this publicly elsewhere, so I'm not spoiling anything-- Amandine (and by extension, Toby) cannot *add* something to the blood that wasn't already there. She couldn't have *added* human blood to Toby's mix. She could change the balance, the percentage, and she could *remove* things... but her powers don't include *introducing* human blood to a pureblood. (Or, I'm guessing on this part, adding any other race's blood to anyone who wasn't born with at least a small amount of that blood.)

So no... Toby's human father is her biological father. She had to have gotten her human blood from somewhere.

This does not make it impossible for there to have been other connections to Simon...

Hmm. Aw. I just really liked the idea of Sylvester *actually* being her uncle.

Well, Simon for all we know, could have had a human ancestor somewhere, that would give Toby (if she were his daughter, I doubt it), like some human blood... but enough for her mother to play with and shift her towards human :)

Seems unlikely with what Seanan said in the FAQ posts about being changeling if you have any human blood because it makes you mortal.

My thought is that Amandine did something to Simon's blood that would count as her taking something away from him.

I'm remembering a comment in Late Eclipses, I think, that indicated that Toby was not the only child Amandine had had and that the others had been killed. There was an implication that Simon was the father of one of those dead children. Amandine had had Toby as a kind of emotional replacement by her human husband and was desperate to keep her alive. Having her be more human than fae was part of keeping her alive.

Hm. Considering that Amandine's mad anyway and the presented idea of mixing blood being not good for the sanity, one has to wonder what a Dochas/Daoine Sidhe mix would've been like.

Since the Daoine Sidhe are Oberon/Titania, and the Dochas Sidhe are Oberon/unknown, probably not bad. They have an ancestor in common, and that's usually what makes for stable mixes.

So then if a faerie made only by Maeve (like Undine - I think you have them as being made from Maeve's tears) and a Daoine Sidhe had kids, the mix would tend to the off-kilter side?

I'm thinking about Raysel's bloodline now. Sylvester is Daoine Sidhe (Oberon/Titania). Luna's parents, Blind Michael and Acacia are children of Maeve... with no involvement from Oberon, then?

Incorrect. Blind Michael is Oberon/Maeve, Acacia is Titania. That said, Luna is not a mammal. Raysel should never have been conceived.
