7 things you can do to help.

Well, here we are. One Salt Sea comes out in one week, exactly. If past trends hold true*, people will begin reporting sightings in the wild any day now. This will either cause me to clap my hands, cry, hyperventilate, or all of the above. Safe money is, as always, on "all of the above." And so here are seven things you can do to help with this book release!

7. Talk about the book. Are you excited that it's coming? Awesome. Are you excited about the series as a whole? Awesome. Do you plan to use One Salt Sea to fuel your world-buster cannon? Rock on. Word-of-mouth is the best advertising there is.

6. Review the book. Do it on your blog, on Amazon, on Goodreads, wherever you feel comfortable. Reviews help more than almost anything else. (But please, please, do not send me copies of your Amazon reviews. I try to avoid that particular pitcher plant of pain.)

5. Loan copies of Rosemary and Rue to people you think might be interested. The first hit's free!

4. Do not poke at me with sharp, sharp sticks. I am a very thinly-stretched blonde right now, on account of book release and all, and I am neither fast to respond nor particularly well-suited to being jabbed at. Please, be gentle, and understand that right now, you're looking at a longer than normal response time.

3. I love fan mail, and I respond to everything I get, although it can sometimes take a while. Please don't get upset if I don't answer right away.

2. Also? Please don't ask for kitten pictures. Seriously.

1. And the number-one thing you can do to help One Salt Sea have a successful launch is...buy the book. Please, please, buy the book. During the first on-sale week if you possibly can (September 6th through 12th), because that's the week that counts against all the bestseller lists. Making those lists is a long shot, but a girl's gotta dream, right? So if you're planning to buy the book, please, go out and do it. Let's see if we can hit the NYT.

If we do, I promise to faint.

(*Past trends may not hold true. Traditionally, early copies have been spotted at Borders, and Borders is gone. I actually dare to hope that my on-sale date may be accurate this time. That said, I've heard unconfirmed reports of early copies found at Books-A-Million.)

Just checked my local SFF bookshop's webpage; it's in and I'll most likely get it tomorrow (past six pm, here) if the weather's OK. :-D
I hope you don't mind that I hope the web page is wrong. :( If it's in import shops a week early, it's probably everywhere in the States, and that'll hose my first week sales.

What about puppy pictures? :)
...no.
Amazon UK are telling me 14th September. Which, on past performance, means any time from tomorrow to October. I'll let you know when it does appear...
Ta!

One week!
Well, my nearby Chapters are still in the clear, so hopefully they won't release the book early. I think they were pretty good about it last time.

I can't wait!
Woo!
I'll definitely be buying it during the first week (and reviewing it on my website soon thereafter, with any luck). Gotta help one of my favorite authors! :) Hope you get a nap soon!
Thank you!
OTOH, my local Borders was reliably *late* getting your books on shelves. Twice I waited till the last day of Opening Week to make sure it'd be there only to find it wasn't, then politely chastised a store minion until he/she went & found it backstage. The other times they didn't have it at all, so I went up the street to Barnes & Noble.
Oh yeah, I think there was ONE TIME IN ALL OF HISTORY when I was able to walk into Borders and pick up a book on the release date.

Not that I comprehend, so no!
1a. Buy copies for your local library!

...which reminds me. *trots off*
What are your thoughts on sending you kitten pictures which require no response? :-D

(Nor does this comment.)

We are about to, against my better judgement*, shortly be adopted by one, so. A vague disclaimer is nobody's friend.

*Keeping in mind that we have eight already.

And I shall hold off on pre-ordering, Just For You. (Since I have no idea how those figures do or don't screw up the bestseller rankings.)
As I understand it, pre-ordering it through a local bookstore counts as a week-of-release sale, because, at least at my local bookstore, they don't actually sell it to me until the date of release.

Which is why I always order the next book when I'm at my local bookstore. It's revenue for them, another copy sold to get one of my favorite authors onto the NYT Bestseller list, and I get it right away.

My birthday is the ninth. With shipping time, it shall be a lovely birthday present to myself ^_^
Yay!
Pre-ordered! :-D

Will likely do a review on one of my blogs as well, just for the fun of it. I like sea-folk. I'm curious to see who I learn about it this one. :-D
Awesome!
I plan to snag it on my Nook on the 6th. May the first week bring you many, many sales!

Semi-related: What does it say about me that my favorite character in the series, besides Toby herself, is the Luidaeg? :o
It says we have similar taste in favorite characters.
What about pictures of kittens poking you with sharp sticks? I mean, I imagine there's a market for stuff like that. ;P
Oh, probably.
I pre-ordered One Salt Sea from Amazon back in May. Do orders fulfilled for drop-date count for first week sales, or are they lost in the ether forever? If so, then I guess I'll have to go buy it again and give one copy away. Oh, the horror. ::grin::
They count! Although I am always in favor of buying more, naturally.
Oooh, yay! I pre-ordered it ages ago; I can't wait to read it!

*bounce*
Yay!
I called Pegasus to order a copy, and they said they could actually order a copy RIGHT NOW and have it for me by this Thursday, and I was like no no I want it to count for her first-week sales, I won't buy it until Tuesday, and she was like I think the sale counts when we buy it, not when the customer buys it, so I think they're going to place the order next Monday so that it arrives on the release date and I will buy it then. I hope that all works.
<3

I adore you.
Hopefully Borderlands (SF) will have copies, as I'll be in SF around 9/11-ish and can find that bookstore easily. :-)
They will! Not only that, if you call and request a copy be held, they can have me personalize it for you.
As luck would have it, I have had several friends who have asked for book recs in the last couple of weeks, so I've been "Toby! Toby! Toby!"

And I just hope and pray that my copy finds me now that I've moved. :/
Woo!
I pre-ordered the e-book on my nook and check every day to see if I can access the book. Hope springs eternal B&N will release it a day or two early. :)
I surely do hope not.

If I pre-order it, does that count for your first week sales? I like to do it while I'm thinking about it, although I'm sure you'll remind us when it comes out! :)
Yes!
Pre-order placed!

Cancels cat pictures.
Woo!
Number two is a new rule. I shall abide and attempt to understand, altho my disorder does make sudden attitude changes difficult to not take personally.

I can only read on kindle, and they don't release for gifts until the afternoon of the release date. Which is when Misha will prolly send it to me. I hope those sales count towards yer count.

Response time never bothers me. Nor would not getting a response to everything I say every time. I am bedridden and tend to blather. You are busy making more things for me to read, and until we get you to constant hardcover status, or a series or movie deal, most writers do not make what people assume and I assume you have a day job as well as entertaining all of us. I just hope when we get you to that point, your secret gay boyfriend is remembered. heh

I am friends with my local librarian and I told her I was friends with a Hugo Nommed Urban Fantasy Author. She is going to stock book one of newsflesh and Toby to see if we can get the locals reading you.

Try to stay sane, and remember, we love you, but sometimes you are gonna have to ignore us and sleeeep.
Well, that's not a sudden change; I always ask people not to demand kitten pictures, because formatting pictures for posting is difficult for me with my setup, and results in my never posting them at all.

Yay, librarians!
Do e-book sales count against sales?
I was just about to post and ask the same thing. I just got a Nook, and I plan to switch over to doing a lot of my reading on it instead, so I thought I might pick up the copy electronically instead of in paper. However, if it doesn't count towards first-week sales, I'll probably pick up a physical copy instead.

Please let us know, thanks!

No fainting allowed.

I regret never reviewing Late Eclipses, but I couldn't think of a way of praising the book without spoiling something. The twists were so good that there's no way I'd spoil it.

I keep recommending the series to my friends, but none of them have actually read the books yet. I must try harder.

I preordered the paper and e-book versions a while back. The audio book too, but that won't be out till Nov.
Yay!
