Reno: the Good, the Bad, and the Unhappy.

I am home from Reno! Finally. I think I may be half-dead, and I definitely need a lot more of a nap than I'm going to be getting in the near future. Here, then, is my extremely truncated and specialized convention report.

The Good.

* Joe's Diner! Kate, Victor, and I arrived early, and were able to wander around, running errands. This led us to discovering an awesome little diner, just far enough from the convention center to be inaccessible if you didn't have a car (and thus entirely uncrowded throughout the weekend). Cheap, delicious food, real malts, and a waitress who came to know us all by name as we returned again and again for delicious meals. Yay!

* Also during our running around, I found a hardcover copy of Hellspark, one of my favorite hard-to-find books. (Actually, Victor found it. But he is a loving Victor, and he gave it unto me.) I will love it always.

* I wound up in two hotel rooms, one shared with Kate (and connected via adjoining door to Victor), one shared with Wes, Mary, and Amy. Both rooms were awesome in different ways, and I couldn't have asked for better roommates.

* "Just A Minute," where I not only became the new champion, I got to do it while hanging out with awesome people (including two of my favorite people, Paul and Caroline). Betcha John regrets telling me that lists were legal...

* Lauren Beukes's sloth! I nearly stole that thing. I still want to.

* Delivering an impassioned verbal smackdown during the zombie panel.

* Interviewing Tricky Pixie, Bill Wellingham, and this year's COMPLETELY AWESOME Campbell nominees. All on different panels, but still. I could not have shared a stage with more delightful people.

* Kaja hugs.

* Having a signing line longer than George R.R. Martin. It was bizarre and confusing, and totally fantastic.

* Brunch with Daniel and Kelly.

* Breakfast with Sheila.

* Surprise DDR with Kate and Vixy and Lauren and Amy.

* Dinner with Mike and Marnie and the posse, during which I received my official Barfleet tags. They're orange and green! I am truly loved.

...honestly, there were a lot of amazing people at WorldCon this year, but if I try to list them all, someone will be left off, because I am exhausted, and then we will all be sad. So please believe that I love all my friends, and I am so excited to have seen them, and I would not have survived this convention without them. Seriously. I would be dead.

The Bad.

* The one day when I didn't have, basically, a team of people handling me, I was unable to get any food for eleven hours, was repeatedly grabbed by people I don't know, and was even followed into the bathroom stall. Not the bathroom. THE ACTUAL STALL. Needless to say, I was not left alone again, resulting in my friends feeling put-upon, my feeling like I had to hide in my hotel room to have any privacy, and everyone being tense. Being grabbed is bad. It scares me.

* Smoking is allowed indoors in Reno. We were in Reno. I am not as sensitive to smoke as some of my friends, but I still feel pretty lousy, even after being home for almost two full days.

* The convention center was almost a mile away from my hotel, resulting in lots of walking back and forth in the extreme heat. Also, if I managed to forget something at the room, it stayed gone until I went home in the afternoon. This decentralized layout prevented a single Barcon from coalescing, and I am hence still faintly sad.

* The decentralized layout also meant that I saw some people I really care about rarely, if at all. Kate put it best when she noted that if you weren't part of the amoeba, we barely saw you.

* Finding things was almost impossible. I didn't even figure out where open filk was until Friday night, when I was doing "Whose Line?" across from it (an 11pm to 1am panel, so no, I didn't join the circle afterward). I made it to the dealer's hall twice, both times for under twenty minutes.

The Unhappy.

So. The Hugos. That happened.

You're not supposed to talk about being sad that you lost; it's considered poor form. Unfortunately, in this internet age, it's impossible to avoid addressing it at least a little if you have any sort of decent web presence. Not only is it obvious that you're avoiding an elephant, people keep hijacking other posts and other threads to tell you how sorry they are. That's worse for my sanity than having a few people sigh meaningfully at me, so I'm going to talk about this once, and have done.

Yes, I lost.

Yes, I am very sad about that. I wanted to win. Everybody wants to win. Wanting to win is human nature, and if you don't want to win, you decline the nomination. End of story.

Yes, I am aware that I lost by a very narrow margin. This doesn't make it easier. If anything, it makes it harder; what could I have done to make my book just twenty votes better? Rationally, I know this isn't a quantifiable thing, but, well. Me and numbers. It's a thing.

Yes, I hope that I get another shot next year.

No, I will not be responding to comments directly relating to the Hugos. I hope you understand why not. Congratulations to all the winners, and huge, huge thanks to everyone who voted. I came in second. I beat Bujold in the voting. That's a damn big deal. Maybe next time, we can win.

That was WorldCon, and now it's not. See you next year, in Chicago.

I'm envious about the hardcover Hellspark. Cool!
It's pretty!
Wow! They tell you how many votes you get? That could be very crappy if someone were to lose by like 1 or 2 votes!
Out of respect for Seanan's preference to Not Talk About It, I will leave this link here without further commentary:

I am in Chicago, and will happily volunteer for the handling and bodyguard crew. If I can keep strange fanboys from following Gates McFadden into the bathroom, I can do it for you too.

I also know where is a very good chocolate malt within a Seanan-Walk of the convention center....
Also, I posted this as a WTF on my facebook page and a friend has offered to tag-team me if need be.

Someone followed you into the stall?!? ::boggles::

::still boggling::

I didn't go to WorldCon because I'm not fond of Nevada in the summertime and I'm very not fond of indoor smoking. I'm pleased to hear it'll be in Chicago next year!
I hope to see you there!
Arrg. I messed up the html in the last comment; my bad.

Welcome home; I hope you get a chance to rest a bit. I know when I come back from a con I need a vacation to recover from my vacation!

*hug* I'm sorry about the unhappy. There's really nothing else to be said about that.

However I did write a new song I think you might like. There are other songs in my LJ, if you're interested; the "new song" tag should pop them all right up if you want to see what they are.

Also if you like PC Hodgell's Kencyrath books, the new e-arc is out. And if you haven't read them, you might like them; I think they would appeal to your sense of humor.

There's even a zombie--sort of. Though she's a minor character and only shows up in a couple of the books, if I remember right.

Just in case you're in danger of getting too much sleep :-P
Have I mentioned recently how amazingly happy it makes me when you write new songs? I've loved your work for literally half my life, and knowing that there's more to hear warms me and lifts me up in a simply incredible way. Thank you, so much.

I think you're a class act for being candid and entirely respectful in speaking about it. I tuned in for the end of the ceremony, and I was sad, but posted on my Facebook page that my consolation was that Deadline was an even better novel than Feed, so no doubt you'd be back; and I had friends who very quickly agreed.

Thank you.
*hugs you muchly, tucks pillows around you*
*loves*
You realy did do a great job at "Just a Minute". You were the only one who stopped on their own mistakes, rather than waiting for another player to point it out, and you still won.

I also want to acknowledge your mature response to the Hugos. I have seen a lot of immature responses to the Hugos online, and I want you to know your civility is appreciated.
If I can stop myself, and still win, not only am I the winner, but I'm gracious and playing fairly. :)

I did all my foot-stamping in the privacy of my hotel room.
Smoking is allowed indoors in Reno.

It's not in Chicago, indeed it's banned in the entire state of Ill.
Oh thank the stars.
Not that it will make you feel any better, but I voted for Feed. Loved it. You deserved to win the Hugo in my opinion. I'm just glad I got on the wagon this year to vote. I also went out and two more of your books today in the October Daye series. :)
Thank you. :)
The Good:
I saw the webcast thingie on "Just One Minute" and literally almost died with laughter. The look on the moderator's face when you first talked 'as the whistle went' ... OMG priceless. And yes, I am sure, we all would have loved to hear you talk more about Martians or invisible girls or ... but MAN, when he gave you - of ALL people!!! - the topic of "A Deadly Virus", I lost it :) (as did a large percentage of the audience, judging by the laughter). Awesome! That game is made for you :))

The Bad: I can't even begin to describe my upset-ness (is that a word?) at that clueless person following you into the toilet stall. Un-be-friggin-lievable ...!
Erm ... umm ... you need a team of people? Yaknow, Steve and I *will* be at the Chigago worldcon, we are already registered and it has been firmly planned on for quite a while. I'd be very very willing to be "on your team". Seriously, I mean it. Granted, I'd not be available the whole time, but for specified times during the con, I could be "all yours" ;-) I've worked as a "shield for VIPs" at cons before, I know you and love you, meaning, you can boss me around without me thinking anything bad about it ... all that stuff. You want me (as in "my help" *grin*), let me know.

The Unhappy (aka the Unspeakable ;-))
Being sad is understandable and ok. I would agree with you that everybody *hopes* to win, otoh there is also people who can be happy about being nominated and accept that as an honour. (I can just talk from Pegasus perspective here ;-))
But trust me ... I totally understand how the small margin makes it very much harder. (Knowing how small some margins were for Pegasi made me wish I had never had connections to someone doing the ballot counting - it would have been easier to deal with just not knowing how narrow or wide the margin was ...) You just started, dear heart. And you already won something cool last year. There will be many more cool moments and wins in your future. *squeezehugs*
During the "Just A Minute" rehearsal, I kept listening politely as other people did their warmups. Paul was all, "don't be shy." And then I got the mic, and watched them all go "oh, crap."

I had a lovely time!

And...yeah. With a Pegasus, it really is enough to be nominated, because we're a community and a family at once. With the Hugo, I truly wanted to win. I am a sad bunny.

I can't wait to see you!
i've got a shot at getting to chicago next year if i start saving money right now and also find three or four or six people willing to split a room.
I am not as sensitive to smoke as some of my friends, but I still feel pretty lousy, even after being home for almost two full days.

I can totally relate -- I get bad allergic reactions from spending too much time around cig smoke. Hope you feel better soon. And I hope next year's WorldCon is a much better experience for you.

Only two weeks left before One Salt Sea!!!
I like Chicago way better than I like Reno. It should be lovely.
A question regarding the ceremony, rather than the awards themselves, that I hope you'll be willing to answer:

Was it just the funky lighting, or did you in fact change from a green dress to an orange one of the same design between the presentation of the Campbell tiara and the rest of the ceremony?

(And you were right - it was fortunate that Lev didn't have any hair to get snagged in the tiara.)
She did indeed.

As it was described to me, Seanan wore a green dress to the Hugos; Mira wore an orange dress.

You are a damn big deal. See you in Chicago, and if you need more team members to keep the clutchers and grabbers away, count me in.

Also, I giggled when I saw you and Lauren stroll onto the stage to play Just A Minute. Lauren was my serendipitous roommate at Anticipation. We met the day before you were to arrive, and arranged for her to share my room so that she could escape the scary place that she had booked over the internet.

I told her that the bed wouldn't be available that night, because a sleepy blonde would be using it early the next morning.
That was one of the first things she said to me! "This is the first time we've met, but you've slept in my bed." It was funny as hell, and I was amused.

Also, she's crazy-sweet. I really like her.
The Good section sounds worthy. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

In regards to the other sections...

*hugs*
Thanks, honey.
It was great seeing you even if it was mostly on panels. All of which were much fun. (I caught the Music for Creative People, Tricky Pixie interview and the reading.)

I usually don't stay for the Masquerade Halftime. I am SOOOOOO glad I made an exception. That was truly epic. I think you've earned a place in Worldcon history. 8-)

Will you be at OVFF? I have a song for you that I finished during the weekend.
I will!
I am looking at the first item on "the bad" and cringing. A lot. I am SO SORRY you had even five minutes like that, let alone a day.
Thanks, honey.
I'm curious. I know that movies plan when they will release based on awards sometimes. Does that happen with books as well? I assume that most of the reasons for book releases being when they are is to assure the quality of the book. Must plan for writing, revising, editing and all that but does the eligibility for a certain award ever play into the timing?
Not in my experience.
*hugs* We stayed up late and watched the livestream just for you, and I very much liked both your dresses!

(And I'd love to go next year. Hmmmmmm. Voting would be a plus!)
It would be great to see you!
The "being grabbed by strangers" part really sucks, and I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. *hugs*
Thank you.
The bad part sounds just horrid!! I tried to avoid lingering in the casino becvause of the cigarette smoke, but I can still smell it in some of my clothes just from just walking through.
And the person who followed you into the stall... Just yuk!!

The good - I'd seen the on-the-fly Just a Minute at last year's Worldcon, and didn't think I could laugh so much again. Until the look of sheer amazement on Paul Cornell's face when you spoke until the bell the first time... You were amazing at it, and thoroughly deserved to be champion!
It was very cool to see your signing line being longer than George RR Martin's, completely deserved!

And I also wanted to add that it was a delight to meet you in person when you signed some books for me - and gave me a TARDIS ribbon!
Thank you so much for coming, and I'm glad you liked your ribbon. :)
Kay_gmd and I were very glad to see you there, and you made our day on Wednesday when you recognized us and said hi the first time crossed paths. Also, we were very amused by the occasional "It's the mini-human!" exclamation from you as we crossed paths during the weekend.
Your concert was awesome, as was the reading from One Salt Sea - I'm very much looking forward to reading the book when it comes out, and we're planning to turn up to the release party, especially as we've found that Josh deals well with concerts when we use his new earmuffs.
The interview with Tricky Pixie was really interesting, and I think you were an excellent person to be the interviewer for them.
On the signing lines, when I mentioned to Kay_gmd that your Worldcon schedule post had included concern that everyone would be showing up for George R.R. Martin's signing and not yours, her response was "Who's George R.R. Martin?" This amused me. We weren't too surprised to see that your line was longer than his.

On the bad stuff, I totally empathize with you on the smoke issue. It's better than I remember the last time I was in a casino there, but I much prefer not having to deal with it at all. Between that and the way Reno air dries out the body, our lungs are very happy we've come home. Next time I'm in Reno, a humidifier for the hotel room is going on my list of things to pack. And I cringe to hear about the grabby fans, especially the person who followed you into the bathroom stall. That's just appalling. Being a celebrity of any sort shouldn't mean that basic rules of courtesy and decent behavior get suspended when fans interact with you. That's the sort of thing that makes me despair of people at times.
It was great to see you!
*Pats the elephant in the room and feeds it peanuts, pats the nook and (virtually) John Scalzi for making it possible for me to honorably vote this year.*

Who TF follows someone into the stall? Okay, I'm not being original here. But, WTF?

The one story I heard about that sort of thing involved clearly criminal behavior. A friend of mine had purchased a set of knives, and, for reasons I'm currently unclear on, went to a stall in the women's room to stash the knives on her person. Maybe this was one of those cases where owning and buying is legal, but transporting is an issue? I don't remember. The point is, she had these knives, no pun intended.

The door to the stall was yanked open, and a woman said, "Turn around, bitch!"

She did, large knife in hand, point out. Whatever it was that the woman was going to do, she decided on a tactical retreat at that point.

The smoke was annoying. I mostly didn't notice it myself (mostly), but I am Highly Annoyed that there were filkers who could not do the open filk on account of the smoke.

I think that the casinos are fairyland. I mean, it's neither day nor night (and, as someone had to point out to me, there are no clocks in any of the casinos), the paths all twist and turn, keeping one from getting out easily, and one is tempted with free drink so as to get one to agree to play games for more than one can afford to lose.

Just in case it comes up, is there some kind of snack that, if you're in a position where you're not able to get food, and someone happens to have some, that someone could give it to you to eat? Or is this a case where the best help is to refrain from helping?
The best help is probably to refrain, or to say "there's a 7-11 next door, gimme a dollar, what do you want."

Thank you, though. I appreciate it.
You found a HARDCOVER copy of Hellspark? I didn't even know that such a thing had ever existed! I bet they invented it just for you to find *g*.

Not next year, see you in 2014 at the London one (assuming we win it, but OutOfCountry Worldcon bids usually do and as far as I've heard we are so far unopposed)?
It's the Science Fiction Book Club edition. I am so pleased. :)

I'll definitely see you in 2014!
