Cast your net to win a copy of ONE SALT SEA!

It's time for ARC giveaway #3...the casting call! Here's how this is going to work:

1. Leave a comment on this post with YOUR DREAM CAST for ANY of my projects. Want to cast the Toby books? How about Feed? Or Sparrow Hill Road? Have the perfect actress in mind for Velveteen? The sky's the limit!

1b. Be sure your comment starts its own thread. Only casting choices left on the original post (not as a comment on someone else's comment) will count as entries. You can suggest cast members for someone else's dream team, but they won't be entries.

2. One entry per project per person (so you can cast the Toby books and the InCryptid books in different comments, but not enter twice with different Toby casts).

3. Explain your cast in the comment. Why are they perfect? Why should we agree with you?

And then...GAME ON! I will choose a winner via random number generator on Friday, at 5PM PST. I reserve the right to supply a bonus prize or prizes for the person whose cast amuses me most, or strikes me as the best supported. (Yes, you can use my casting choices, but you do need to explain why you agree with them.)

Go Hollywood or go home!

Velveteen: Janeane Garofalo She has the 'tude. In spades.
Action Dude: Gerard Butler I think he could pull off blonde icon with complexities very nicely.

I realize these actors are older than the characters, but this is fantasy. If constrained by real age, I would pick Anne Hathaway on the basis of her voicing "Little Redd" in Hoodwinked! and maybe Pouty Lips from Glee (aka Chord Overstreet).

Celia Morgan: Stockard Channing Because she is Stockard Channing, and would be a very convincing Governor of Oregon with a grudge against the superhero system.
I'm casting the Feed series:

George: Hilary Swank, via 1999 or so. I like her for this choice because I think she has the intensity I imagine George to have, all angles and determination. I like that she's a little androgynous in appearance- it fits how I imagine George would want to look.

Shaun: Eric Christian Olsen- but more scruffed up then most of his movies portray. You probably haven't heard of him unless you've seen Community or Fired Up, but if you watch a clip of him from Fired Up he has the air of joviality I think of with Shaun, whether he's bantering with George or firing at zombies.

Buffy: Brittany Snow- perfect as is, with lots of glitter. She has the bubbly persona with a darker undertone down pat. I loved her in John Tucker Must Die, but I think of her role in the updated Hairspray as what she could convey in complexity.

The Masons: Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt. Both of these actors have qualities that allow them to present a soft public face but, ultimately, a fake one. One that in its fakeness serves as an isolating and almost abusive factor in George and Shaun's childhood.

Senator Ryman: Bill Paxton- not for any real reason, except that I liked him in Twister and think he could sell the forceful positivism that Ryman exudes.

Emily Ryman: Ashley Judd- she's a real southern girl, warm and tough. I think she could play Emily's limited part in the book(s) well.

Rick: Marc Blucas (aka Riley from Buffy). Not sure where else to find a mild-mannered, corn fed boy who could charm his way onto George and Shaun's team?

Governor Tate: Mel Gibson (plus 20-30 pounds). I think Mel could quite literally scare people with his intensity ala Governor Tate.

I think I covered the major players. :) Hope you all enjoyed!
Eric Christian Olsen - but he has such tiny nipples!! Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

Too out of touch with current actors, so Feed in muppets:
George=Red from Fraggle Rock (or maybe Gobo I think he fits better, and their muppets, so who can really tell their gender, still a little too cheerful though)
Shaun=Gonzo
Buffy=Janice
Rick=Fozzie
Senator Ryman=Kermit
Governor Tate=Sam the Eagle

Forgot reasoning:
George=Red Red has the willingness to say what's on her mind even if it will piss you off
Shaun=Gonzo Really Gonzo just jumps out as the quintessential Irwin muppet
Buffy=Janice looks flighty and crazy, but really really excellent at her job
Rick=Fozzie I just really like Fozzie, and I picture him in a trenchcoat and fedora with a press pass
Senator Ryman=Kermit Trustworthy and earnest to a tee very good at doing sad and angry
Governor Tate=Sam the Eagle I think Sam is really the image that Tate is trying to project, and he's very good at looking sinister.
I was instantly drawn to the prospect of casting the Velveteen series...until I started trying to think of Hollywood actresses of the right sort, and DQing most of them. Which made me think in a totally different direction, at which point I realized that the dead-perfect Velveteen is...

...wait for it...

Vixy (aka vixyish).

I'm totally serious here. Consider: aura of pure adorability, check. Relates well to plush toys, My Little Ponies, etc., check. Can appear totally bewildered and lost at times, check. Promptly rises above bewilderment, etc. and kicks villainous butt, check. Could totally carry off wearing the outfit in public, check....

Which, of course, leads us to:

Action Dude: Tony, aka tfabris. Another shoo-in. Chiseled good looks, mild-mannered (but rock-steady) charm, and most importantly the ability to look convincingly sheepish on cue.

Sparkle Bright: Brooke, aka hsifyppah. The perfect anti-heroine; instantly respected, possessed of dangerously rapier-like wit, suffers fools not at all...and will ultimately do the right thing, even if she'll kill you for so much as suggesting it was her idea.

The Halloween Princess: seanan_mcguire, of course.

Which pretty much covers the major roles. I'm tempted to suggest filkertom for The Claw, though....
The cast of Feed: Just for Giggles
Georgia: Megan Fox (from Transformers, she has great eyebrows)
Shawn: a younger Joel McHale
Buffy: Leven Rambin (forthcoming in The Hunger Games movie as Glimmer)
The Masons: Angelina Jolie (she can pull off the blonde and Irwin badass)
Rick: Ryan Reynolds
Senator Ryman: Aaron Eckhart
Emily Ryman: Gwyneth Paltrow (based on her performance in the Iron Man movies)
Governor Tate: Donald Sutherland

Since I've previously cast the lead for this, I'll try to flesh it out . . .

Toby: Stana Katic (For those not familiar, she plays Detective Beckett on "Castle.")

Tybalt: Rupert Everett (Twenty or more years ago, I'd have said Tim Curry)

Connor: Orlando Bloom

The Luidaeg: Kathy Bates

Lily: Michelle Yeoh

Sylvester: Anthony Stewart Head

Luna: Tilda Swinton

Rayseline: Eliza Dushku

Oleander: Helena Bonham Carter (too easy, I know)
THIS YES.

Stana Katic for Toby is great, as is Anthony Stewart Head for Sylvester. He's totally the settled hero. And Eliza Dushku as Raysel! And Kathy Bates as the Luidaeg! Love this cast.

I always read Tybalt in the voice of David Bowie, ala Labyrinth. I can't help but picture him this way, only with hair and dress as you've described him. I don't know why.

As for Toby, I picture her a lot like my friend/former roommate, Holly, who is a model and looks like cover-Toby. I can provide pictures if needbe.

The cats are naturally Lily, and a thorny Devon Rex for thorny-kitty whose name currently escapes me (stupid meds). Spike?

The Luidaeg is Mary Louise-Parker with grey streaks in her hair.

Danny is Andre the giant

Quentin is Aaron Johnson, much like this photo: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1578928128/nm1093951
I agree I always have pictured Tybalt as David Bowie in Labyrinth!
Hmm. I was going to do muppets for Velveteen, but someone already did Muppets, and someone already did Velveteen. Ok, so how about comic book characters for Velveteen? I'll stick with Marvel, because I just know them better.

Vel: Kitty Pride. She doesn't have the angst quite down, but she could probably pull it off, and she's got the right overall physical conformation.

Sparkle Bright: You know, I was -going- to say Dazzler. But really, I couldn't think of anyone better to play Sparkle, barring age issues, than Katie Power.

Action Dude: Cyclops. He's got the air of utter seriousness, and the experience with dumb romantic issues.

Princess: Dazzler. She's not even close to Princess, of course, but she's good enough to pull her off, and she's good at the air of almost-innocence.

Hailey: I'm running a blank here. Maybe Illyana? But it would be a stretch for her; I don't think I remember ever seeing Magick smile, and that was before she died and was brought back to life (twice?). OTOH, blonde bad-ass ruler of a dark other dimension describes both of them. If one wanted to push style, maybe Dagger?

Scaredey Cat: well, if Hailey is Dagger, Scardey Cat is Cloak. Or one could drop into Astro City and cast him as Jack-in-the-Box, but that breaks one of my constraints.

Jackie: Emma Frost. Obviously!

Tag: Hmm. Bad boy. Clean cut, young-ish. Actually, I could see Peter Parker playing him; they've got totally different styles, but they both have the "youngish rogue" bit down.

eta: My links aren't really working. Hrumph.

Velveteen - Jewel Staite. Girl-Next-Door enough for a super-heroine who never got the glamor, but can handle action scenes and would strike fear into the hearts of evildoers in the bunny-ears.

Tag - Lee Thompson Young. He's pretty, he has teenage-hero credentials, is pretty. . .

Jackie- Ellen Page. She's good at characters who are snarky, cute, and a little scary when annoyed.

Princess- Amy Adams. No one can out-adorable her. No one.

Sparkle - Scarlett Johansson. An easy choice for the cover of any superhero magazine.

Action Dude- Jesse Spencer. He can do the "handsome in a all-American, wholesome way' thing, though getting him to sound the part might require a good accent coach.

Governor Morgan - Reese Witherspoon Tiny, blonde, and totally not someone you want to mess with.

But I'll do this. Too much fun! But I'm going to go with the dream team, not the one I can - yanno - actually have. So actual age is going to hop all over the place. Fricken hopping, yo.

Sparrow Hill Road? Tara Strong for Rose Marshall. Give Bethany to Sarah Michelle Geller, why not. For the Queen? Shiina Ringo.

Gary. Hmm. Gary. Stephen Collins.

Violet Barrowman - Phylicia Rashad. Give Matthew Barrowman to Bill Cosby, why not.

Bobby Cross. I can have anyone. Hrm. Brandon Lee, on general principles.
If the Toby books were made into a movie, my dream cast would be....

Toby - Jennifer Connelly; because she's almost prettier when she's frowning
Tybalt - Clive Owen; hot, hot, hot
Luidaeg - Helena Bonham Carter; because she can go from normal to scary in 2.6 seconds
Sylvester - a younger Robert Redford; because he can pull off the ginger look
Luna - Diane Lane; because she has a regal, timeless beauty and sad eyes
Connor - Patrick Wilson; attractive in an adorkable way
Quentin - Joseph Gordon Levitt; the impressionable youth
May (ignoring the fact that she and Toby are initially supposed to look like twins) - Emily Blunt; because she can do comedy
George: Can you cast this? I don't know that it's possible. Casting George would be kind of like correctly casting Lear (can't really be done). For lack of better options, dye Jennifer Lawrence's hair dark brown and stick black contacts in her eyes. She deserved that Oscar nod for Winter's Bone.

Shaun: Anton Yelchin (from Charlie Bartlett, among others) because no one else has quite his balance of cheekiness, wounded spirit, and soul

Buffy: Laura Vandervoort (erstwhile of V) because *look at her*. If you saw her on the show, tell me you can't imagine her embodying just Buffy's mixture of brainy, earnest drive and holier-than-thou fatalism?

The Masons: Julianna Margulies (of Julianna Margulies is awesome) - again I refer to a previous role on an over show - The Sopranos) and Linus Roach of Wings of the Dove, etc. (no one plays professorially underhanded and yet somehow wishy-washy like this dude)

Senator Ryman: Aiden Quinn. Anyone who saw Legends of the Fall when they were twelve will not disagree with me.

Emily Ryman: Sela Ward. Talk about your steel magnolias.

Governor Tate: Stephen Collins (aka the dad from Seventh Heaven), because he totally has that secretly evil thing going on.

Rick: Kevin Alejandro (from True Blood, currently). I don't have much reasoning behind this one. Just that he's who popped in my mind when I read Feed, possibly because of the quiet cunning he brings to a lot of his roles.

Jennifer Lawrence was who popped into my head from the start too! Dark hair like how she is in The Hunger Games

I love this game! But we're going to have to make this movie in the mid to late 1940s. And I'm only casting the first Toby Daye book, because I'm not allowed to buy more books until I move into my new house.

Toby - Lucille Ball, for her comedic chops and physicality. Also, at that point she was a B movie actress (not even a TV star yet), which would help give the audience an understanding of a changeling's status.

Evening - Veronica Lake, for her icy cool

Tybalt - Errol Flynn, for his sexy slink

Sylvester - Cary Grant, for his fatherly appeal

Luna - Gene Tierney, mostly for her looks

Rayseline - Elizabeth Taylor, because she could pull off the crazy intensity

The Luidaeg - Gloria Swanson, because of the performance she could give, because she wouldn't mind dressing down, and because in the late '40s she hadn't had a movie in long enough that the audience would see her as something older and more mysterious than the rest of the cast
oooo

for Feed
(and I'm assuming the Tardis can go gather my cast from whenever I happened to think of them.)

George - Diana Rigg circa 1966 Avengers
Shaun - Keanu Reeves.... okay, no then. How about Christopher Reeves as a baby? or maybe very early Cary Grant?
Buffy - Sarah Michelle Geller, or perhaps early Buffy Sainte Marie, just for laughs
Senator Ryman - Paul Newman, pre-spaghetti sauce
Emily Ryman - Claire Bloom circa 1963 The Haunting or the Twilight Zone episodes
Rick - Elijah Wood maybe, not too clear on this one - telling you my nephew is a perfect fit really doesn't help any....
Governor Tate - William Shatner in any incarnation, though later would work better.

A
When all the suggestions are in, any chance you could combine the really, really wrong choices into a Casting Impossible, perhaps even adding a few of your own "ouch" contenders?

Not close-but-no-cigar, but NOOOOO!!! choices - Angeline Jolie as George?
Well see, I don't think that Toby and friends would be done justice by a live action movie. I see anime. This way everyone will look and act as cool as they do in the books. King of Cats? Definitely anime. Oh yeah. What fun that would be.
What anime style? And voice actors? :)
Okay here goes! For the recurring cast of the Toby universe:

Toby - Cobie Smulders, better known as Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother. I know if the only thing you've seen her in is HIMYM, she doesn't seem like the right fit, but she looks the perfect part in my head, and I know she could be Toby. And also May. :)

Tybalt - Ewan McGregor, the idea of which was originally proposed, I think, by Katie Tinney, but she was just so so right.

The Luidaeg - Dame Judi Dench, because she is all kinds of awesome, including being super tough and scary.

Connor - James Marsden. Because he's always always the one who starts off with the girl, but ends up getting left for the cooler guy at the end. Sorry if I've offended anyone, especially the authoress herself, but that's just the way I see Connor, because I'm a hardcore Tobalt shipper.

Lily - Gong Li, who was in Memoirs of a Geisha.

Sylvester - Alan Tudyk, perhaps a bit older? But I still love him, and he can totally be a redhead.

Luna - Kate Winslet, who we all know from Titanic also makes a gorgeous redhead. Plus she's so regal and elegant and I just adore her.

Rayseline - Amy Adams. Not the most obvious choice here, but I think she could really pull off the crazy evil bitch part in a way that would surprise everyone. :)

Quentin - Chris Colfer, obviously from Glee. As the youngling, I think his porcelain features make him perfect and adorable, as Quentin is.

And lastly, Toby's cats, Lacey and Cagney should be played by none other than your cats, Seanan, because really any combination of your three cats sounds just like them. Maybe whichever one doesn't get the part of an actual cat can be Spike.
PS- sorry for the extended italics. I forgot an end tag and don't have a paid account to be able to go in and fix it. Alas.
A proposal for the Toby books!

October Daye/May Daye: Audrey TautouTybalt: Michael FassbenderQuentin: Jeremy Sumpter
It's not easy to bring a fay demeanor and charm to a hard-as-nails role, but this actress has the range to play every version of Toby, plus her easy-going Fetch. Is this selection influenced by his performance as Magneto? Oh yes. He had the walk, the talk, and the pointy teeth to recommend him highly. His Peter Pan knocked my socks off and those of everyone I know. He'd be earnest, and noble, and perfect in every way. Just look at that grin!
The Luidaeg: Cate BlanchettSylvester Torquill: David WenhamLuna Torquill: Nicole Kidman
Katherine Hepburn would have topped the list for this role, no doubt, and those are hard shoes to fill. But perhaps the lady who brought us Galadriel can create a character who's striking, terrifying, and otherworldly enough to do.Hair can be dyed, but one's demeanor can't, and this role should be played by a redhead. And, if I may quote, "There’s nothing conventionally pretty about him, but when he smiles, he’s breathtaking."When presented with a lady who's quite literally a fox and a rose, one name jumps immediately to mind.
Lily: Kobayashi RyokoThe Queen of the Mists: Talulah RileyRaj: Ben Barnes
Her winning performance in the Japanese drama Maou testifies to her hand with a strong but delicate otherworldliness. And speaking of otherworldly, here's a cold, timeless, inhumanly perfect beauty, ready to eat your heart out.Caspian is just what a princeling cat should be, especially when he snarls.

On the non-human side, I must recommend one of the cats who keeps myself and my housemates for kitty-form Tybalt.

See how he was able to recreate Mr. Fassbender's expression? And he absolutely adores Toby.
YES on Tybalt. I was totally going to suggest him. <3 <3 <3

I'll start with the one that'll probably get me hit:

Quentin -- Justin Bieber. I'm not a Bieber fan, but hear me out -- cute teenage Canadian boy. Toby once compared Quentin's appearance in his human disguise to a teen idol. Who better to play him than an actual teen idol? Just give him blonde hair and he's perfect.

Toby/May -- Claire Danes. There's something fae-looking about her. I think she's got the talent to do all of Toby and May's moods justice. She just needs darker hair.

Tybalt -- Ian Somerhalder. All sex appeal and predatory grace.

Sylvester/Simon -- Campbell Scott. I think he'd do all the facets of Sylvester's personality (and that of his evil twin Simon) justice. He's probably a little old to play a fae, but I find it easier to picture someone who's like a father to Toby as looking old enough to be her father.

Raysel -- Kirsten Dunst. I think she's fully capable of doing bitchy and insane brilliantly.

Luna -- Julianne Moore. I think she'd be equally good as Gardening Kitsune Luna and Blodynbryd Luna.
Kirsten Dunst would be AWESOME as Raysel. Her turn in Interview was freaking awesome/creepy/broken and she was just a child then.
I don't generally have dream casts for books. But apparently The Luidaeg in my head is Alex Kingston. She definitely has the right combination of scary and awesome required for the role. She terrified a Dalek!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005094/

And Tybalt is Mark Sheppard. For some reason I always read him in a British accent. And he has the slightly predatory and shady demeanor required of a cat.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0791968/
Yes on Alex Kingston!!! :D
Toby: Olivia Wilde. Because.
Tybalt: Adrian Grenier (Entourage) He's the only thing hot enough to almost do it justice.
Connor: Ryan Kwantin (from True Blood.) Trust me.
Luna: Cate Blancett. It's less for looks, more for attitude.
Sylvester: Viggo Mortenson. He's got all the sides and some to spare.
Luideg: Kerry Washington. She's got mad skills.
Quinten: Chase Crawford (yes, from Gossip Girl) Adorably, like a puppy.
Rayselle: Katie Cassidy. She's evil but you still like her.(From Supernatural)
Queen: Anglina Jolie. Nobody does pretty crazy like her.
Lilly: Yun Jin Kim. (From Lost) She's serene, but secretive.
Danny: Jorge Garcia (the Dude from Lost) He's likable.
Julie: Kristen Bell. She's a tiny fire ball.
Devon: Matt Bomer. He can make bad seem pretty good (the lead in White Collar)
April O'Leary: Hailee Steinfeld (that kid from True Grit) I think she'd nail the 1/2 human thing.
January: Idina Menzel (She's Broadway) I think she could rock this out.
Alex: Justin Hartley (From Smallville) He's pretty enough to be a girl
Blind Michael: Common. Pretty, and toweringly arrogant.
Raj: Jaiden Smith. Who else could be that entitled?
Acacia: Liv Tyler Just a little intimidating, just a little weird.
Oleander: Archie Punjabi. (From Good Wife) she's incredible.
Etienne: Tom Hardy (scene stealer from Inception)He's impossing
Amandine: Marion Cottilard. Gorgeous, pyscho, untouchable, done.
The Other Brother: (appologies to Neil, but that's how I've started to think of bad siblings) Clive Owen. He's got a scary side.
Toby: Tammy Felice - The abillity to switch from being normal to being Fae, let alone the fetch portion of program

Tybalt: Rik Young - Don't ask, cuz I don't know why, other than I saw him and thought of Tybalt.

Connor: James McAvoy - Cuz it never hurts to have him in a film.

The Luidaeg: Patricia Clarkson - She's that older lady that you can't quite put your finger on how old she is. She's pretty, but it's not a young, fresh pretty... plus the ability to give you that one look that makes you think you should have kissed your mom goodbye before you knocked on her door.

Lily: Elizabeth Sung - A more elegant (and nicer) version of my explanation for the Luidaeg

Sylvester: Chris Hemsworth - Again, it never hurts to have him in a film and I just see Sylvester as the more solid type

Luna: Diane Kruger - It's the quiet smile that got me with her

Rayseline: Evan Rachel Wood - A feeling of "Hi I'm pretty, oops, I killed you, my bad."

Oleander: Helena Bonham Carter (I know someone else already picked her, but she's perfect for the appearing sane until she kills you part)

Queen of the Mists: Dakota Fanning - Because she's a complete psycho with a pretty shell, but no one would say it to her face
I'm terrible at these things, so I don't have real selections. However, in the shower this morning (where all the best thinking occurs), I decided I would want Maggie and Jake Gyllenhal to play Georgia and Shaun Mason, simply because I would be entertained beyond belief watching RL brother/sister team play fictional stepbrother/sister team that has a sexual relationship that they have to convey subtly, and if they tossed in a sex scene (and this *is* hollywood we're talking about), that would just be an added bonus of twisted.

Tumblr is a lovely place, full of pretty photos that make fangirls go squee. All photos don't belong to me.

Ruth Wilson is my mental image of Toby, pre-Late eclipses. I think it's the cheekbones and badass smirk that blow me away. Not conventionally pretty, but definitely striking, and charismatic enough to charm a Cait Sidhe King and a married Selkie.

I think Sigourney Weaver would make an awesome Luidaeg, I can imagine her in blue overalls, rough and growly and hair all over her face. The picture just fits!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

And for a crazy Rayseline, I think Eva Green would be perfect. Dye her hair fiery red and she'd have the crazy-but-gorgeous look down pat i think!

I'm not quite sure who I'd cast as Tybalt, mostly because I can't quite find someone young enough, capable of being devastatingly, cleans-shaven and good-looking and dangerous at the same time. dangerous men are rarely clean shaven. for some reason it's like a rule- dangerous men must come with stubble. the closest i can think of is Michael Fassbender, but he doesn't quite fit the image for me.

but I think Andrew Garfield would make a good Connor, a bit dense, a bit adorable and pretty to look at.

Sylvester for me, feels like Robert Downey Jr, with a charisma and attractiveness that comes with age and wisdom.
Rose Marshall: Erika Christensen

I’ll admit that she is a little old for the part, but she is good at portraying old souls in young looking bodies. Her performance in Lie to me Season 2, Episode 1: The Core of It shows her range.

Emma: Christina Hendricks

She would make a kick-ass bean sidhe.

Bobby Cross: Kevin Bacon

Iconic Hollywood is what Bobby Cross is all about

Gary Daniels (present): Thomas F. Wilson

He’ll be aged up for the scene in Faithfully, but he has the “all-american boy” grown up look. He doesn’t have to play villains all the time.
Gary Daniels (1945): Matt Czuchry

I thing he is a bit more subtle an actor than some of the current “pretty boys”.

Bethany Marshall : Vanessa Marano

It is a travesty that she has not played a witch yet.
Cast: Toby/May - Eliza Dushku (Buffy, Dollhouse) Tybalt - Karl Urban (eomer in LotR, and Caesar in Xena) Leudaeg - Claudia Cristian (Ivonava in Babylon 5) Quentin- Zac Efron if i need to. Wil Wheaton if i can have him in his late teens. Luna- Marina Sirtis (wearing platforms.( Because she is not tall enough) Sylvester- Jonathan Frakes (William Ryker in TNG) Amandine- Claudia Black (of Farscape Fame) Connor- Ryan Gosling (remember the titans, the notebook) Queen of the Mists- Jeri Ryan (7 of 9 from Voyager) Oleander - Hudson Leick (Callisto from Xena) Dare - Dakota Fanning Evening WinterRose - Lucy Lawless (Xena) Lily - Ming-Na (Joy Luck Club, Push, ER)
