DEADLINE open thread. Have a party.

To celebrate the release of Deadline [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], here. Have an open thread to discuss the book.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

Seriously. If anyone comments here at all, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. So please don't read and then yell at me because you encountered spoilers. You were warned.

You can also start a book discussion at my website forums, with less need to be concerned that I will see everything you say! In case you wanted, you know, discussion free of authorial influence. I will probably answer a great many comments. I may not answer all of them.

Have fun!

I have decided that Shaun does not win Worst Boss of the Year award, mostly because he's more interested in saving the lives of his employees rather than firebombing them into slag, but damn, I do not want to live in that universe. (I'd still pick him over quite a few other people, but a boss going through a major depressive episode post-bereavement is not something you walk into with your eyes closed. Or your body armor off. In this universe I'd pack him off to a really good counselor. In his universe, I imagine he needs a really good weapons store more.)
Alaric is very, very glad he actually works for Mahir.
Mahir is lovely and every time Shaun is a dick to Mahir I wanted to smack him with something. (Howwwwww could he never have seen piiiiiiiictures?) Also, my hurt/comfort 'ship is TOTALLY Shaun/Mahir, which I told Tif last year, and she LAUGHED EVILLY AT ME and then totally spoiled me for George/Shaun, WHICH I HAVE THEN BEEN SITTING ON ALL YEAR, BE PROUD OF ME, I DID NOT EXPLODE.
I am proud of you, and also never telling her anything again. Hmmmph.
Oh dear, I hope you are not too vexed with her! It made total sense in the context of the conversation, and it did not spoil my enjoyment of the book; I was just waiting to see if this was the book in which that shoe dropped (or if it would be dropped at all and it was just going to remain a bit of extra knowledge) so I was looking for clues while I read, just waiting to see...!!!

And now I can not explode.
It's not a matter of being vexed. It's a matter of "I need people to be absolutely confidential with things that aren't published yet."
It looked to me like he was rougher on Dave than he was on Alaric, we just didn't get to see it as long.
I'd be worried about all of the punching of the employees he does.
I'm especially worried about how he punches Dave, and then apologizes and swears that this is the last time.

However, consider Dr. Joe, who sort of blows that off the map as far as "worst boss".
There is that.

But I did wonder, "do we need to do an intervention on Shaun? Is Dave in an abusive bosslationship?"
My answers to those questions were, respectively: Yes, Yes, and Mahir is probably too civilly-raised to actually smack him.
Yeah, probably.
I think Dave willfully allowed himself to be a punching bag in the hopes that it'd keep Shaun from bigger explosions and abusing others beside himself, and that eventually it'd get Shaun to see he needed therapy. Serious, serious therapy.

We might've found that out if Dave hadn't died in Oakland. Poor dave.
