DEADLINE open thread. Have a party.

To celebrate the release of Deadline [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], here. Have an open thread to discuss the book.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

Seriously. If anyone comments here at all, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. So please don't read and then yell at me because you encountered spoilers. You were warned.

You can also start a book discussion at my website forums, with less need to be concerned that I will see everything you say! In case you wanted, you know, discussion free of authorial influence. I will probably answer a great many comments. I may not answer all of them.

Have fun!

Okay, it is later, and here's a reaction beyond OMFG (mind you, that one is still there):

1. Georgia's voice in Shaun's head. OMG perfect and heartbreaking. I am REALLY curious if it is strictly loss of sanity or something else, but if it's something else I imagine we'll find out in Blackout. I would assume insanity, but she felt VERY George-like and not Shaun-like. However, Shaun knows George better than anyone else would, so his brain could do that....

2. "She would have gotten better." This was the point I did the first freakout. OMFG. Kelly is lucky she lived through that scene, I might have started an outbreak (by KILLING HER) in Shaun's shoes. I wanted to smack her. I wanted to shake her and Dr. Wynne, because dammit, they MUST have realized that Georgia at least had a chance of survival based on her prior records plus when they had her after the convoy and they DIDN'T F***ING TELL ANYONE. I see the point about "but what if they don't" - but if Shaun had known it was possible but not guaranteed, and that she'd be sick first? I bet he'd have hopped out of the van with Rick, and locked her in. Just a guess.

3. Dr. Wynne. It didn't hurt as much as it could, because the previous point already led to me going "wait a minute..." about how nice he was, but I still wasn't expecting him to be...well, THAT.

4. The incest thing. Um. I got very upset at that scene, but not at the incest. I got upset because GEORGE HID THE TRUTH. LOL. Reminder to self: first-person narrators are unreliable. And of COURSE she wouldn't tell us that, but she was SO painstakingly honest about most things while managing to imply that wasn't the case, that I dismissed my niggling feelings of 'maybe...' during FEED and wanted to yell at her for lying to me after the reveal. And then I started laughing at myself.

5. Cloning. I find this and the neural transfer the hardest part to buy. But I have every confidence that next year, in Blackout, I will get an explanation that sorts it out. I think partially I find it hardest to buy because I most WANT it...although I am more wary and less hopeful-thrilled after reading some of your comments about clone!George being not a perfect transfer.

6. Shaun's immunity. O.o Holy. Crap.

7. I hope they can figure out something to do about the insect-born strain. Ack. :(

8. TATE. I loved that Tate being the evil cackling baddie was actually deliberate IN character.

9. Rick. I am so worried about Rick. I daresay we'll find out in Deadline, but I only hope it's as simple as messages not being passed. I'm worried he's in some kind of bad spot.

Dr. Abbey? ROCKED. Mahir! Yay getting to meet Mahir! Poor exhausted torn-from-his-life bloke. :(

I desperately want it to be next year...and I don't. Because Blackout ends the trilogy, and as much as I want to know what happens and understand the things I don't understand, then it will be over. Right now, I think I want it to not be over yet more than I want to know - and that's kind of impressive, considering.

You are evil. In the best possible ways, but...wow.

[ETA #8 and #9]

It hurt quite a bit. Whereas the 'hid the reservoir conditions' hope just meant he wasn't so straight dealing and nice as we hoped, the other stuff pretty much tainted his reasons for every other interaction that took place in Feed.
From the second we found out Dr. Wynne helped Kelly escape, and the weird phone call, I sadly concluded that uh, he's probably evil. And that was BEFORE the zombies hit. Darn it.
Alas.
Well, if it makes you feel any better, once George came up with a positive test, the CDC or pretty much anyone else that saw her would have shot her anyway. Possible recovery or not, their society doesn't allow for such things with the CDC connection to the tests.
1. Yay.

2. I, too, freaked out right around that point.

3. Yay!

4. She didn't hide the truth, she felt that it wasn't relevant. Much like she didn't narrate every time she went to the bathroom.

5. Fair!

6. Yup. :)

7. Flyswatters.

8. Yeah, it cracked me up a little that his monologue was most people's big issue with the first book, given that it was so over the top because it was staged.

9. Good concern is good.

I love Dr. Abbey and Mahir.

And thank you. :)
