DEADLINE open thread. Have a party.

To celebrate the release of Deadline [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], here. Have an open thread to discuss the book.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

Seriously. If anyone comments here at all, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. So please don't read and then yell at me because you encountered spoilers. You were warned.

You can also start a book discussion at my website forums, with less need to be concerned that I will see everything you say! In case you wanted, you know, discussion free of authorial influence. I will probably answer a great many comments. I may not answer all of them.

Have fun!

I'm right with you on "she would have gotten better." That and the entire passage about India. And the breaking news reports near the end.

Personally, one of my favorite lines was the crack about getting cited for standing too close to a goat..... (eta: found it, page 45. Oh, Mahir.)
My favorite line:

"Shaun Mason, code Campbell ... I'm pretty sure my hand is evil, now gimme some sugar baby!"

I almost fell off the bed.
I was wondering - was that sheerly out of the weirdness of Seanan's head, or are there references there I'm totally missing?
The trees are coming may be from a poem by Phillip Larkin.

"I'm pretty sure my hand is evil" is a reference to the movie Idle Hands, one of the horror movies that doesn't involve zombies. Seth Green (Oz from Buffy) stars.

And I'm not sure about "gimme some sugar, baby!" that could be from a lot of different places.

Actually, I'd go with the first Evil Dead (Magdalene was having a film fest with it). In the movie, the Trees rape a girl, the Bridge is out, leaving them stranded at the cabin, and Campbell has to cut off his own hand because it becomes "evil".
Just my take though.

Oh, and "gimme some sugar, baby" is from the last installment of the Evil Dead movies.
Oh, that's right.

I hadn't even put that together. I haven't seen the first Evil Dead in probably over 15 years, either.
Yup, that's how I took it--all Evil Dead/Army of Darkness references. :)
Winner!
Your take is correct!
I'm pretty sure it's all from the Evil Dead movies. Code Campbell, as in Bruce Campbell.
Yup!

I definitely agree. It made perfect sense to me that Shaun would use a line like that. Bruce Campbell is his kinda guy. :)
