DEADLINE open thread. Have a party.

To celebrate the release of Deadline [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], here. Have an open thread to discuss the book.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

Seriously. If anyone comments here at all, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. So please don't read and then yell at me because you encountered spoilers. You were warned.

You can also start a book discussion at my website forums, with less need to be concerned that I will see everything you say! In case you wanted, you know, discussion free of authorial influence. I will probably answer a great many comments. I may not answer all of them.

Have fun!

I loved spending time with the secondary characters we didn't get to see much in Feed. Mahir is love. How fucking awesome is Magdalene, calmly asking whether they need to bury Kelly out back?! And dammit, I liked Dave. Of course, I liked Dr. Wynne, too. Argh.

I knew someone was going to clone George as soon as Kelly mentioned cloning -- if researchers hadn't done it, Shaun would demand it as soon as the smoke cleared -- but I was expecting a blank-slate George, not one who remembers everything up to the gunshot. That revelation puts the "disposal" of Kelly's clone in a very different light.

I do wonder about Shaun's George-voice seemingly knowing things he doesn't, and clone-George's dreams, and the pack behavior of the infected... hmm.

What's Rick up to?

I loved how Feed was all about the effects of blogging on society, and a lot of Deadline has to do with the effects of all that openness on the bloggers. There's so much they have to hide while keeping up appearances, and so much happening that they don't WANT to talk about in front of a live audience.
Maggie makes me happy. She's my wee violent Paris Hilton cognate.
I loved, loved, loved her last blog post.
Hee.

Yay.
If Maggie had cats instead of bulldogs, I'd have almost thought she was you. Sorta, kinda.

Sounds like a fairly simple way for a not-quite-sane brain to deal with things it digs out of the subconscious rather than the conscious.

And for a long time, Shaun didn't have to process a lot of info - George read a lot of those signals for him. So when he's very stressed and miserable, not quite sane, without her, and now needing to process some of that info himself - co-opting her voice to do it seems a natural reaction to me.

It actually sounds like a sensible way to go crazy.
It totally does, and it's one of my favorite things about the book. I'm just not prepared to assume that's all it is, if you see what I mean.
That was the idea!
