DEADLINE open thread. Have a party.

To celebrate the release of Deadline [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], here. Have an open thread to discuss the book.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

Seriously. If anyone comments here at all, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. So please don't read and then yell at me because you encountered spoilers. You were warned.

You can also start a book discussion at my website forums, with less need to be concerned that I will see everything you say! In case you wanted, you know, discussion free of authorial influence. I will probably answer a great many comments. I may not answer all of them.

Have fun!

Picked DEADLINE up yesterday, read it (eee! Yay!), commenced with squee. Shaun and George's relationship remains pretty much my favorite part of these books (and that I can say this after she's dead is awesome), though I am always gleeful over disease-related geekery. I definitely sobbed at "She would have gotten better" and Shaun's subsequent psychotic episode, and laughed hysterically at "There's no way our building is generating spontaneous zombies."

Anybody else have favorite lines? I wish I'd been jotting them down, with page numbers, as I read.

I'm right with you on "she would have gotten better." That and the entire passage about India. And the breaking news reports near the end.

Personally, one of my favorite lines was the crack about getting cited for standing too close to a goat..... (eta: found it, page 45. Oh, Mahir.)
Can I just say, I LOVED being able to write so much more Mahir? Happy author is happy.
Happy READER is happy, too. I adore him.
Second the happy reader is happy! And Mahir talked to Georgia, which made me grin like a mad thing.

Agreed! I also loved hearing more about Mahir, even to the point that I thought if Shaun died, I'd be ok with the last book being written in his voice. Looking forward to seeing more of him in Blackout!

We are too ;D I love Mahir.
I had this really weird reaction when he got to Weed...suddenly he felt more real, more there then he had when they were talking on the phone or in video chats...and that felt right until I realized I was have this feeling about A CHARACTER IN A BOOK I WAS READING. Great job with voice and characterization. And I'm in the Mahir fan club as well. Can we get him and Tybalt together sometime? (just kidding)

I know several folks who were expecting, right up until the end, that Shaun would die and Mahir would be the narrator for Blackout. I'm almost disappointed.

My favorite line:

"Shaun Mason, code Campbell ... I'm pretty sure my hand is evil, now gimme some sugar baby!"

I almost fell off the bed.
I was wondering - was that sheerly out of the weirdness of Seanan's head, or are there references there I'm totally missing?

I definitely agree. It made perfect sense to me that Shaun would use a line like that. Bruce Campbell is his kinda guy. :)
I need to track back down the page where Alaric (?) is swearing and ends with something like "... of a chicken-fucking soy farmer" and something.
Yeah, and the diseased convention-center worker...that was an epic rant. ;)
Alaric is a happily profane man.

I loved the spontaneous zombies line.

I didn't like "she would have gotten better" line. I liked the 2 in 10,000 figure and that there really was no way to have known she would. It's sort of a "Ick -- wait, let's see if that's really what's going on, because -- Ah. Right. Yeah, that makes so much more sense, because --" followed by several pieces clicking into place about why it couldn't possibly be as simple as reservoir condition = cure.

Mind, I don't blame Kelly for saying it. She's very bravely putting the card most likely to make someone shoot her on the table.

I liked her line "Right. Because he obviously shot me with a sedative or something."
Awesome. :)
I fell absolutely in love with Mahir at "You bloody cowards. May you have the world that you deserve."
My sister Chuck texted me in the middle of dinner with, "If Mahir dies..." I think we need a Mahir fan club, for certain.
*joins it*

The problem with that -- not that I don't love the line or Mahir -- is that everyone gets the world that the bloody cowards deserve.
"If I ever find out who fired that needle, their official cause of death is going to be Shaun Mason"
And (from memory; have already handed my copy over to Dale) "Shaun will kill you, but I will make you pay . . . I'm a journalist."
