I regret nothing!

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva will be firing for the first time on September 10th, at 9:00 AM (or thereabouts). Since I am not actually in Geneva, this means the Large Hadron Collider will be firing for the first time...tonight. At around 11:00 PM. After I've gone to bed.

So, y'know, I may wake up to discover that a black hole has been accidentally unleashed and will now begin cheerfully devouring the planet. Or I may not wake up at all, since the really paranoid people inform me that there's a decent chance the Large Hadron Collider will recreate the Big Bang and, in so doing, unmake all creation. (Amanda, before you hit me with your amazingly large physics brain, I know this isn't going to happen. But a girl can dream.)

So if tomorrow we're all reduced to component atoms, stardust, and the sound of voices screaming "I told you so!" into the void, well...

I regret nothing.

Do you?

Huzzah!
Hitting you with my brain would not be a pleasant experience (I am not fond of concussions). I am indeed one of the cohort who is very tired of hearing these very very unlikely scenarios discussed, but I have resigned myself to the inevitability :).
See, I, too, have resigned myself to the inevitability...

...but I'm allowed to hope for an apocalypse straight out of a bad horror movie, right? Your children can be the priests of the Church of Physic, and wear poorly-designed clerical gowns made from old lab coats!

I'll probably still be awake. I'll try to call you if I notice signs of the Universe starting to dissolve.

There are stupid things I wish I hadn't done, but I don't regret who I am or how I've lived.
Awesome.

Friends help you move; good friends make sure you're awake for the total dissolution of reality as you have known it.

I regret that I am sick right now. O:(
Awwww, poor hon.
Before all creation is unmade, make sure to learn all you can from the Large Hadron Rap.
AWESOME.

Tonight's firing won't be so bad. They're only firing in one direction. Now, next month, they're firing in both directions...

before you hit me with your amazingly large physics brain

Talk about "this will hurt me more than it hurts you"...
Well, the brain lacks pain receptors. So it's only opening her skull that would hurt her.
If it's more entertaining, imagine it's a Large Hadrosaur Collider, in which dinosaurs are jammed together to see what new fabulous beasts emerge.

Plus I heard the actual collisions won't be happening until October anyway.
"Look, it's a 10^-19 chance, and you've got a 10^-11 chance of suddenly evaporating while shaving."
imagine it's a Large Hadrosaur Collider

... *shinyeyes* WANT.

Exploding on me is fine when it's funny, honey. I figure it's sort of like my total flip-out when people were all 'woooooo woo the WORLD will END' on January 1st, 2000. No, bad math people, the world's gonna end NEXT YEAR.

...maybe not having a pony and an army of killer dinosaurs?

Or maybe that's just me. ;-)
Damn. Okay, no apocalypse until I get my pony, and my army of killer dinosaurs.
Why have I not seen this icon before? This icon is so quintessentially you.

Now that I have seen it...

I REGRET NOTHING!
I don't tend to open posts with it all that often, and then I go through my icons in alphabetical order on replies, starting with the icon after the default icon on the post.

OCD cat is twitchy sometimes.

Well, allmost, I regret not being there when it's being spun up.
I'm really curious to see what happens.

Allmost time.
see you on the other si<*poit*>
I regret nothing...

And the world still exists...

It's odd, though, that not many Europeans (that I know of) were worried about this...
Well no, we actually are taught science in school here.

I regret little. Not big enough regrets to stress over, anyway.

Protons went 3km around the ring, so the first stage went ok. They'll be sending more round throughout the day, getting further around each time according to the chap at CERN interviewed on Radio 4 this morning.

It's odd, though, that not many Europeans (that I know of) were worried about this...

Most of the people I spoke to were either completely unaware, or just not bothered. (Hey, I'm in the UK. There's nothing that can't be sorted out, calmly, with a nice cup of tea! Black Hole? That's nice dear; put the kettle on would you?) :P
All the way round already. It went a lot faster than they were expecting, with no problems. Remarkable for something that big and complicated, I wish my (much smaller) software rollouts were that smooth.

Then there's sending stuff round in the other direction, of course, and then ramping up the energies.

(And don't forget that Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the first HTTP system and "Father of the Web", was working at CERN at the time...)
