First, unformed thoughts:

I loved seeing more of the inner workings of Shadowed Hills - everyone in that dutchy is fascinating, and only partly because they all seem to be various kinds of insane.

I'm impressed with Quentin's growing up enough to be willing to bust Toby from the Queen's prisons - that's pretty hardcore rulebreaking for a kid so obsessed with protocol.

I also maybe had a hard time concentrating on anything else in the book after the image of Tybalt holding kittens.

Ah! The kittens! That was the hardest part of the book for me. Do whatever you want to the other characters, I expect that. But a little kitten? Thank goodness for Walther.

Ooh definitely. And I desperately want to know I loved Walther so hard! Even though I totally did not trust him for a while (random character we've not seen before turned up a few months before Lily got sick, is the trusted one on whether she had clean water and also knowledge of poisonous stuff? I was suspicious. And so glad to be proved wrong)!

I didn't trust him until he fixed Spike. I have trouble trusting characters in any sort of fantasy setting. Magic complicates everything.

Indeed, I was uncertain about him.

Now I think he sounds like the sort of fellow Toby needs in her fief (assuming she keeps one, I'm only halfway through) to keep on STAFF. She's going to need his skills again, I'm sure.

And yes, the kittens. *cry* 'scuse me while I go hug my kids.

Yeah, I had to hug my cats after that scene, much to their consternation.
