I still think Quentin being from Canada and the King and Queen holding court in Toronto are somehow related. I don't see them answering Sylvester's request for just anyone.

And the super sappy part of me was so happy to see Amandine come back. I just couldn't imagine anyone completely abandoning their child.

...you and me both, and now it is so OBVIOUS. True or not, it's so obvious, but I think yes. Oh my.

I wanted to reread the series anyway, just for the fun of it, so this makes a good excuse. :)
Toby actually guesses Quentin's accent as specifically 'Toronto' the first time they meet. It makes me have Thoughts.

Of course, most of my theories prove to be totally wrong.
I agree. I'm pretty sure they're his parents (and have thought that ever since I learned the King and Queen were in Toronto).

But maybe that's just wishful thinking, since he is my faaaaavourite.
Well, what do we expect from an incognito prince? Perfect manners, perfect honor, desire to be a hero, surprise at encountering the hoi polloi, gradual mellowing into someone who's enjoying being treated normally, right? That's Quentin to a T.

Besides, there's a scene in Local Habitation where Toby says something like, "I order you not to die!" and Quentin looks amused and mutters, "Are you pulling rank on me?" I bet no one ever did that before. Yeah, he's crown prince.
I had forgotten that part! I just assumed it was because Toby of all people was giving orders.

You have to wonder about a monarch who sends their son to be raised around Sylvester, though, given how people see him.
Oh man, I feel like an idiot for missing that! But that's gonna be so awesome when Toby figures it out/finds out. :)
O.O I missed that too.
Oh, he totally is. That said, I'm pretty sure he himself doesn't know; isn't he in the kind of fosterage where he doesn't get told who his actual parents are till he leaves it?
Not quite. In Seanan's post about fosterage, she never said there was a kind where *you* don't know who your parents are. She said there's a kind of fosterage (blind fosterage) where *everyone else* doesn't know who your parents are.

So to relate to that post, it would've been "This is Quentin. He lives here now." But not "You're Quentin. You live here now."
Yeah, I was thinking of something from R&R, not from the fosterage post.

Just went back to check book, and was totally misreading it.

Conclusion: you are entirely correct.
I think it's the kind of fosterage where no one around him except Sylvester knows who his parents are. In Rosemary and Rue, I think it was implied that he definitely knew who his parents are, and if he hadn't grown up with them he wouldn't have the Ontario accent.
Yeah, I was operating under a misreading. I am now covered in shame.

(Hilariously, that "are you pulling rank on me?" stuck me as damn odd at the time because while *I* thought (and still think) that he's got to be the High King's son, I didn't think he did.)
That line *still* makes me giggle. :)
Amandine is fun to write. In a, you know, "holy cheese you're crazy AND powerful" sort of a way.
That's been the guess that my wife and I have since we first discovered where the High Couple lived. Even if he's not, he'd have to be descended from someone at their Court (unless Toby's completely wrong), which means definite Connections.

Of course, that leads to the question of why Rayseline thinks his parents have "no power" in Shadowed Hills. She is, of course, crazy, and may be entirely wrong, or not know.
My vote is for "not know". Luna might, but Sylvester wouldn't go spilling state secrets to the equivalent of a teenager, especially to one he knew had The Crazy, if not how far she'd gone. He never named her his heir, after all.
Which makes one wonder just how much of her jealousy might eventually become self-fulfilling prophecy, since we've seen Rayseline basically flip out, and Toby's already been promoted once...
This. Definitely this about Quentin's posssible parentage. Um, hi. :-)
Late to the game. Had to reread and finally finished today.

OMG YES!! Quentin+VIP.
