So we've been working for a while now -- and by 'we,' I mean taraoshea and porpentine -- at giving my website a total overhaul. Because of the way my brain works (which is not like your Earth brains), this means Tara designs the new graphics and layout, Chris implements them, and then I start doing the new site text, because I can't 'see' where the new text should go until I have the old text in place on the shiny new layout. So poor Chris is going to do a huge amount of heavy lifting and then immediately get hammered with textual updates. Feel for him.
In an effort to keep him from killing me, I figure I should start prepping some of the text now, while I still have a little wiggle room. So I present to you...
What goes into my FAQ?
Obviously, there needs to be a section on filk, as well as the absolutely required section on writing. What do you want to see there? What makes sense? What have you always wanted to know, but been afraid to ask? What have you put into your own FAQs?
Mine is at http://www.sff.net/people/jchines/FAQ.htm if that helps. It's all writing-related, but includes the questions that seem to keep cropping up ... as well as the ones people don't ask, but I wish they would :-)
Link to publications. Link to your Amazon page with your books on them. Hobbies. Top ten horror movies of all time. Link to this LJ. Something about your cats.
There should probably be a "Are you really a virologist/zoologist or do you just play on the internet?" question, because people are going to want to know.
I don't have a FAQ, I'm not interesting. I only barely have a website, it's somewhere to hang my hat (er, put my software and a few links I don't want to lose)...
Things I'd be interested in knowing (some I know already but they are the sort of things I'd like to know if I didn't know them):
Writing:
What writing of yours is available (and from where)? How long do you spend on average on research, writing, revising, etc. until you are happy (or it gets sold, whichever comes first)? Who and what were and are your influences on what you write?
Zombies:
What types of zombie are there? Where did you get your interest in zombies? Who would you recommend as authors of zombie stuff?
Viruses, pathology, etc.:
Where have you found information? Any good books or whatever? I can has links plz?
Music:
Filk, obviously, probably several questions. Your music, what it is, where to get it, who does it with you. Recording tips, stories, etc.
BPAL, colours, clothes, etc.
Cats!
(That should be enough to keep you from getting bored for a while, and by then I'll probably have thought of more...)
How did you get your start as a writer/songwriter/artist?
Who was your childhood hero/what did you want to be when you grew up?
How do you get your book ideas?
Do you base your characters on real people/How are you like your characters?
Will you read my MS and tell me I'm awesome? (I suggest a link to the Writing Tips you've been doing.)
Will X thing ever happen in Y book?/Will A and B characters ever have hot monkey sex?/Why did you kill my favorite redshirt Fred?
Will you tell us a funny story about writing? (Will you tell us a funny story about whatever-you-do seems to be a frequent panel/Q&A question, so you should probably just be prepared for it in general.)
Pirates/Monkeys vs. Ninjas/Robots?
If all of your characters had a fight, who would win?
Where else can you find me singing or my songs? (I know of 2 that could be linked to, but I would not mind finding more places you appeared that I don't know about.)
Seanan, I have to say - even if it's not actually in your FAQ's - you should definitely put up your essay on being a writer. That's a whole section unto itself. And your essay (though calling it an "essay" really doesn't do either of these writings justice...) about how to properly ride the bus? Classic. ;) They should go up there too so that people who don't know you from LJ will get the chance to enjoy your writing too. (Well - besides buying your books when they go on sale. ;)
Well, the one about the BART you seem to update on a fairly regular basis. It's always a great read - and good for anyone who's using the bus system, in my opinion. As for the writing information, just everything you've written on the subject in your LJ has been really enlightening. You've had many entries about that. It's hard to choose one. :)
There should probably be a section on halloween, pumpkins, and pumpkin flavored things that you've eaten. Also, though not a part of the FAQ itself, but perhaps linked from there, the glossary of words or phrases you use in unconventional ways. Though that's really more important for people who interact with you personally, so maybe not.
Actually, on another note, once the Toby books are published, it would probably be good to have a glossary of fairy races, possibly with some major characteristics of each, and/or something on fairy political structure.
Other questions for the FAQ: What should I know if I'm hosting you somewhere? What should I know if I'm assigned to keep you properly fed at a convention? Will you accept invitations from fans to hang out after a signing? I made this zombie/pumpkin/rose goblin/picture of one of your characters for you, how should I get it to you? Where should I send fan mail? Where should I send hate mail? Where should I send long explanations of how you got your virology/fairy lore/computer science all wrong? So what's your deal with coyotes? Will you be doing a signing at my favorite local bookstore? If I write a song about your book, is it okay to send it to you? If I write fan fiction about your book, is it okay to send /that/ to you? Do you accept art/poetry/song/short story commissions?
I also agree that a section for other essays and things you've written could be good. The notes for new public transit riders, coyote commandments, poetry tutorials, and essays on writing would all be good things for that section. I should probably find more if I went and looked, but those are a good start. I'm not sure if you'd want to put the list of insane things you'd done on your professional page, but that would also be good there if you did. Possibly also the 'user guides' to Seanans, but, again, you might want to edit one specifically for the professional website version.
If the response to your Bio is anything like the response to my Bio, I suggest putting up a blunt and less than polite answer to the question: "Will you go out withme/marry me/meet me for coffee?"
Brought down the instance of such questions from twice a week to about once a month.
I second putting up a version of the "user guide." All the other stuff is interesting as well. Perhaps also an answer to, "Can I host a concert for you?" A question I long to ask you when am a little less busy myself.

What do you write with and/or on?
Will you sign my copy of Rosemary and Rue? I went into the future and got one. There was a sale.
Stephen King? Really?
How many fluid ounces of Diet Dr. Pepper do you consume in an average day?
What is your high score on DDR?
You wouldn't really feed your friends to crabs...would you?

And maybe one on your pets. People always want to know about pets, for some reason.
