LATE ECLIPSES ARC giveaway #3: Just the FAQs.

Whee! Time for another ARC giveaway! Once again, I'm giving away an ARC of Late Eclipses, the fourth book in the October Daye series, which comes out in twenty-seven days. So you could get an early chance to find out what's going on! Also, I'm actually giving away two books this time. Curious? Read on!

If you've been to my website recently, you may have noticed that my Toby FAQs are a trifle, well, sparse. Whole books are missing. Since I'm getting ready to shuffle things around to make room for InCryptid, I'd like to fix this. So here's what you need to do to enter today's ARC giveaway:

1) Leave a comment on this entry containing a suggested question for one of my FAQs. FAQ-type questions only, please, like "Is the date at the beginning of An Artificial Night correct?" or "Why has Quentin's hair changed color?", not "Will Toby and Tybalt ever get together?" or "Is there going to be a movie?"

2) Leave the comment on its own, please, not as a reply to someone else's comments. Comments on comments can't win, even if they have the BEST QUESTION EVER.

3) That's all.

Now here's the twist: I will be choosing two winners. One will be chosen by the random number generator, cruel mistress that it is, and the other will be chosen by me, based purely on my personal "that's the BEST question" reaction. Also, I will use your questions to improve the FAQ, so really, everybody wins.

I will choose a winner at 2PM PST on Tuesday, February 8th.

Game on!

Why did the queen totally freak out when Countess Evening Winterrose died?

I really hope I win since I would LOVE to have a physical copy of one of these gorgeous covers.
I can't tell you, but I promise you'll find out eventually.
What's with all the characters named after months?
Not telling.
I'm not entering to win, once is awesome enough. but I did want to contribute to the FAQ.

Q. Will Toby ever get to enjoy a cup of coffee without mortal peril?

:-D
Hee.
Does the scent of someone's magic relate to their lineage?
To some degree.
Do Cagney and Lacey occasionally run off to the Court of Cats, or are they simply housecats?

Do all cats in the vicinity run off to the Court of Cats from time to time?
Well, yeah.

They're cats.

;)

Is T.S. Eliot cursed in the Court of Cats (for 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats') the same way Disney is cursed among the fae (for Tinkerbell)?

Will Gillian ever manifest as a changeling?

Is there any connection (beyond their friendship) between Toby and the Luareig (as Toby's bloodline's ability to read blood is specifically cited as a 'dark' gift)?
I am unable to answer questions #2 or #3 for reasons of spoilers.

You are still entered in the drawing.

Q: What are the rules of Blind Michael's Hunt.

Sorry, I am posting another one, since I accidentally posted one earlier that is already in the FAQ, i.e. what is the changeling's choice. Apparently, I didn't scroll down far enough in FAQ. :(

Hopefully this is OK. If not, I understand.
This is fine, although I can't post an answer for spoiler reasons. :) You're still entered in the drawing.
Two questions:

1. Why are changelings who choose to be mortal killed?

2. So, in A Local Habitation, we are told that January was not backed up to computer. But, her blood is empty -- the night-haunts won't come for her. What's up with that? Was Gordan lying?
I can't answer question #2, as that falls into the realm of "asking for spoilers."

Q. If I went out and bought five copies of Late Eclipses, how long would it take Thomas to eat the resulting cat food this income would provide?

Q. How did you get the idea of making a tree root data structure into a dryad?

Q. In An Artificial Night, Tybalt informs Toby that someone lied to her. What lie is he referring to?
A. He's a kitten. Five minutes.

A. Good question, but I don't put "where my ideas come from" answers in the FAQ. That way lies madness.

A. I'm not telling.
Q: If Fae have troubles with fertility within their own kind, and yet are more enthusiasically cross-fertile with humans, how is it that they are ever successfully cross-fertile with other species of Fae?

Q: You're a fan of pathogens. What pathogens (if any) can affect the Fae as well as humans? Are there pathogens that can affect only humans and changelings, or only the Fae and changelings? Are these less or more virulent in a changeling than they would be in someone more full-blooded?
This isn't really an FAQ-style question, so...

Fae are more fertile with other types of fae than they often are with each other. No one knows why this is, but it's biologically consistent throughout Faerie. Sadly, many of these breedings are either sterile, unstable, or both, so it's socially frowned upon.
Are the various Courts of Cats connected with an archking/queen (like the marrok in the mercy Thompson series) or are they all independent?

Why did Toby go from human to fish to human and loose her clothes in the process when cait sidhe get to keep their clothing? Where does the clothing go when they change?

Do the Cat shadow roads feel different to cait sidhe than they do to Toby? What are they like for them?

Why is Julie’s dad dead?

Is fae in general think little of humans, rarely bother to interact with them and don’t think much of changelings then why do they have sex with them?

Are there any humans or merlins stuck in Faerie?

How much energy does a human disguise take to create and to maintain?
Has it ever occurred to you that May Daye, said quickly sounds like mayday, an internationally recognized distress signal?
It's french, it means 'help me.'

1) What's the basis for referring to the part-fae as Changelings? Until the Toby books, everything I read about changelings talks about them being fae babies left in the place of stolen human infants.

2) How quickly do Changelings age?
1) It was a quick way to demonstrate how human mythology "got it wrong," since most changeling children disappear eventually, one way or another.

2) It depends on the strength of their fae blood, and how stupid they are.

With all the magic burn Toby goes through I have to wonder... What happens if she uses too much magic? We've seen the horrendous migraines... Once it hits that point is it just that much and no more, or is it just a Very Bad Idea to keep going?
Go far enough, it'll either knock you unconscious, or even potentially kill you.
What is Sylvester's favorite color? Is it the same as his "official" colors?
Yes.
Will we ever see any fae races from Central and South America, Africa, or Australia/New Zealand?

(Hopefully this isn't spoilery, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a Cuban Mother of Waters...)
Apropos of nothing, that is a BEAUTIFUL icon you have there.

A section, I guess, more than a single question:

What are the rules for fostering fae children like Quentin? How long do they have to stay? Do the fae familes get anything in return? If children are so precious, why would parents give them up for extended periods? Do fae families ever foster changelings, or do they only foster purebloods? Are fae parents more likely to foster children with another fae race, or within their own? Those are the details that immediately come to mind.

I love Quentin, so I find myself more and more curious about these arrangements.
Have you ever raised a teenager? If not, when you have, the answer to the 4th part of this question would be more obvious... :)
Does the race of fairy that the non-human parent was affect the power level of a changeling or is it totally random?
Pretty much random.
How Old is Lilly?
Are most fae nocturnal?
Yes.

Selkies, Cu Sidhe, and Gremlins are the primary exceptions. And Gremlins only do it 'cause they're ornery.

When did Toby lie to Tybalt?
Does Toby's cat spy on her for Tybalt?

Why does Luidaeg call Toby Child of Oberon when the Daoine Sidhe are claimed by Titania?
All of these questions fall under the veil of spoilers, sadly, and cannot be answered. You are still entered in the drawing.
How did Toby get her mortal world P.I. license?

This started as a question about how/whether the fae study math, and then turned into a wordy question about the different training for purebloods vs. changelings, and whether it depended on family connections or was proscribed; but I think the above is what I really want to know. You inspired me to look up the CA rules for qualifying as PI, which include, as of today, "Three years of compensated experience totaling not less than 6,000 hours in investigative work, while employed by law enforcement agencies, collection agencies, insurance agencies, banks, courts, and other private investigation agencies, etc." (http://www.bsis.ca.gov/customer_service/faqs/pi.shtml)

Of course, I don't know what the requirements were in the late 90s, but I imagine you do.

Apologies in advance if this is a spoilery question; I've spent several days trying to make sure that I could come up with one that could be easily answered without revealing things we aren't supposed to know yet.
Actually, that's an awesome question. (Sadly, the answer is "Sylvester bought it for her," basically.)

Why did Luna choose to keep her kitsune form after she'd escaped her father's lands?
If she released it, her father would have been able to find her, and bring her home.
Will we see other Kitsune (or other types of Fae) in future books?
1) I can't promise anything. Kitsune are actually quite rare in California. Technically, you've only seen two, and they were both dead at the time (Yui at Tamed Lightning, and Hoshibara).

2) There have been new types of fae in every single book thus far.
Do you believe the Old Ones exist?
If you could ask Toby one question, what would it be and why?
1) No.

2) Will you please not kill me?
