LATE ECLIPSES ARC giveaway #3: Just the FAQs.

Whee! Time for another ARC giveaway! Once again, I'm giving away an ARC of Late Eclipses, the fourth book in the October Daye series, which comes out in twenty-seven days. So you could get an early chance to find out what's going on! Also, I'm actually giving away two books this time. Curious? Read on!

If you've been to my website recently, you may have noticed that my Toby FAQs are a trifle, well, sparse. Whole books are missing. Since I'm getting ready to shuffle things around to make room for InCryptid, I'd like to fix this. So here's what you need to do to enter today's ARC giveaway:

1) Leave a comment on this entry containing a suggested question for one of my FAQs. FAQ-type questions only, please, like "Is the date at the beginning of An Artificial Night correct?" or "Why has Quentin's hair changed color?", not "Will Toby and Tybalt ever get together?" or "Is there going to be a movie?"

2) Leave the comment on its own, please, not as a reply to someone else's comments. Comments on comments can't win, even if they have the BEST QUESTION EVER.

3) That's all.

Now here's the twist: I will be choosing two winners. One will be chosen by the random number generator, cruel mistress that it is, and the other will be chosen by me, based purely on my personal "that's the BEST question" reaction. Also, I will use your questions to improve the FAQ, so really, everybody wins.

I will choose a winner at 2PM PST on Tuesday, February 8th.

Game on!

(I do not wish to be entered in the drawing; I just want to help with the FAQ.) :)

You might want to edit this post to have the link to the FAQ as it exists now, to avoid duplicates and also give a better idea of what kind of questions we're talking about. :)

The Series Itself:
Are there other works available set in the Toby Daye universe? (e.g. short fiction)

The World:
Not technically a question, but I'd suggest adding, in the part about changelings, the thing about merlins.

How does marriage work in Faerie? Is there divorce, and if so, how does that work?

Since it's a rare occurrence (other than in war), what do the fae usually do when one of their number dies? Are there rituals? Are things done differently if someone is killed in a war?

How do the fae choose names for their children? And why do some of the lines have surnames (other than changelings with human fathers) while others don't seem to have them?

How many Courts of Cats are there? How do they determine their boundaries?

Do the fae travel much between mortal-world countries since they've been locked out of all but the Summerlands? Was there more travel before that happened?

Toby:

After "Toby" you might have an "Other Characters" section:
What is Gilly's full name?

Does May have a middle name?

How long has Tybalt been king?

Rosemary & Rue:
Who made the Hope Chests, and why?

A Local Habitation:
Are there fae in other countries assimilating modern technology, as well?
Thank you!!!!!
Q: If Toby's parents were married, why is she occasionally referred to as a bastard?

(I've seen this come up a few times; I know the answer is in your journal's history, but it's not super easy to find.)
Toby's parents weren't ever legally married under Faerie law. She has a very informative post on fae marriage here.

Hee.

It's okay. :)
Besides the Fae, do any other supernatural entities exist in this setting, or are all supernatural entities a form of Fae?
It's just fae in this setting.
What happened to Toby's father / is Toby's father Toby's father?

...if he wasn't, would I tell you?

Have you written under other pen names (besides Mira Grant)?

(edit: I hate typos!)
Yes.

And no, you can't know what they are. :)
Let's try this again >.<

Has Toby started to adapt to 2011 technology, or is she still bewildered by cellphones and DVDs?
She's adjusting. Just...slowly.
How is 'Daye' pronounced? Like "a summer's day" or more like "da-ye" making the middle name joke (and May's name) stunningly painful even more funny?
No wait the second part nnnngh I got that wrong. I know what I mean, and can clarify if no one else does.

...Maybe going back to bed will improve my English-doing skills.

How much authority do the royals have over the lesser lords? For example, can the Queen command Sylvester? What are the limits of the Queen's power?
1) Lots.

2) Yes.

3) She can't break Oberon's Law; the High King can stomp her if he wants. Beyond that, within her demesne, there aren't many.
Are there any Australian fae and will we get to meet them if there are?
There are! And I don't know yet. One of the InCryptid books is set in Australia, if that helps at all.
I'd like to enter! If this question doesn't qualify, let me know, because it's more of a writing-related question, even though it relates to the series:

How many books of the series did you have written before you sold Rosemary and Rue, or did you simply have an outline for the later books? Do you already have the whole SERIES outlined, or are the adventures unfolding as you write each book?

Okay, that's two questions, and you're welcome to tell me if these don't qualify for the ARC contest! :)
I actually had books one through four written, and book five about halfway finished, when I sold the series. All of them had to be extensively rewritten and revised to fit the final continuity; One Salt Sea is barely recognizable as the book I started out with.

I have the series broadly outlined, and allow for tectonic shifts to occur as necessary. Book eight, for example, didn't exist until I finished book four and realized what I'd been missing. Things change as I figure out what does and doesn't work. I know the final ending. It's just some of the details that are a little blurry.

It has been stated numerous times that it is unusual for a changeling to be knighted - How did Toby earn that honor?

She did stuff.

That you'll find out later.
Why is Toby occasionally freaked out by the Luidaeg?

I have to keep reminding myself occasionally, as the friendship between the two really makes me forget how scary dealing with the Luidaeg can be.

also

Are there any Toby songs on your albums or in your songbook? If so, what are they?
'cause she's a legendary monster.

And no.
Will we ever see fae from parts of the world aside from the vaguely British-y area? Especially indigenous fae from the Americas?
No, because those spirits aren't fae. It's a very narrow line between "being inclusive" and "warping the mythology of others"; one of the hard and fast rules of this world is that ALL fae are descended in some way from the Three. So if there are native magical beings who aren't, they avoid the fae completely.
Why are heroes said to be children of Oberon?
Because most of the races Oberon has claimed tend to be heroes.
How much of the world's mythology comes from your own imagination, and how much is based off of faerie lore?
About 60/40 folklore/invention.
Doing my best not to ask the wrong sort of question:

"Why does fairy magic die with the dawn ?"

I have an intuition that some of the things in the first book, the hope chest, Toby's daughter, The Queens reaction to the news of the death, will come back to haunt us in the future....,

Because the fae and the sun are not friends.
Are any of the characters based on people you know?

Does the scent of a person's magic correspond with their physical/personality traits in any way, or is it completely random?
Not in the Toby universe!

It can correspond, but such correspondences are generally pretty loose.

Do Rose Goblins come in different colors?
Yes.
If Toby were a fruit - what fruit would Toby be?
Annoyed.
Why was she named October Christine? Is there a story there? Was she simply born in October?
There's a story; it's connected to why there are all those month names running around; I can't tell you.
I think my neighbors are being replaced by aliens. What should I do?
Run.
Okay, where's the link to your webpage?
Once I can get there, I'd love to give it a try to help you. Really. It doesn't hurt I'd love to win the books, but I'll try to help anyway.

He's a pretty straightforward bogeyman, really.
Why has Quentin's hair changed color?

Why does the Court of Cats use Shakespearian names?
They don't, per se. Tybalt has a Shakespearean name because he has a Shakespearean name; Juliet was named after him, because her parents were trying to suck up.
