Are you coming to our party? Our Reno WorldCon party?

Okay, folks, it's time for the official reminder that the deadline is fast approaching to gain the right to nominate for the 2011 Hugo Awards and John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. This means that if you have an interest in shaping this year's final Hugo and Campbell ballot, you need to fulfill the requirements like, super-soon. And what are those requirements? Simple:

To be entitled to submit a nomination ballot you must join Renovation as a Supporting, Attending, or Young Adult member by January 31, 2011, or have been a Supporting or Attending member of Aussiecon 4, the 2010 Worldcon. Nomination ballots must be received by Saturday, March 26, 2011, 23:59 PDT. Translation: If you didn't go to Aussiecon 4, you need to be a Supporting, Attending, or Young Adult member of Renovation before the end of this month. You have six days left. I'm just saying.

Since I'm basically cribbing from the official announcement anyway, here's the next chunk:

"After the finalists are announced, all Supporting, Attending, and Young Adult members of Renovation (including all members who join prior to the closing date of the final ballot) will be invited to submit ballots to select the Hugo winners. Renovation members will also be eligible to nominate for the 2012 Hugo Awards to be hosted next year by Chicon 7, the 70th Worldcon, in Chicago, Illinois."

See? Two nominating periods for the price of one!

More seriously, every year, I see people complaining about how the Hugos don't represent "their" idea of the best science fiction and fantasy out there. Well, this is your opportunity to put your money where your mouth is, and shape the year to come. You have six days to decide.

And now, the official:

More information about the Hugo Awards, including details about how to submit a nominating ballot, is available from http://www.renovationsf.org/hugo-intro.php.

This is, perhaps, one major reason I regret no longer living in Reno. I will not get a chance to schmooze with you and other authors I admire and do the schoolgirl "Squee!" over*.

I do hope that you have a wonderful time and don't feed the slots too much of your hard earned income.

*Which is really ridiculous (and embarrassing) when uttered by an Old F*rt such as me.
I am unlikely to give the slots any of my income. Unless you count the ones on the soda machine, where I play a fun game called "Can I Win A Diet Dr Pepper?" Guess what! I can!
Ah, but the locals know where the Last of the Penny Slots hide.

Oh, if you happen to encounter a suave, charming, blond rogue of a magician named Robert, tell him Kat says "Hi!". I think he may still be working there. Just don't let him kiss your hand or you may be missing a watch.
Noted!
Oh, yeah. Gotta remember to nominate this year!
Yah -- what were we going to nominate again? I am totally blank on which books came out which year when it comes to the Hugos. I'm pretty good on the Aslans.
Yes.

Yes, you do.
Yeah, I know. I have nominated occasionally, but not nearly as often as I should given how many Worldcons I go to.

Part of that is because as Lisa alluded to, I tend to be busy reading for a completely different award I volunteer for around the time Hugo deadlines come up, but that's only a so-so excuse; the ability to nominate for an award you care about (whether that's the Hugo or, say, the Pegasus) is both a power and a responsibility.
It can be difficult, but you're right; it's a power and a responsibility. And if we don't nominate, we don't get to complain when our preferences aren't represented.
It's true. We can still complain that the thing we wanted to win didn't win -- as long as it was nominated and we voted.

And I've finally gotten around to nominating in all categories for which I had opinions.

One thing worth mentioning (particularly as I hadn't remembered this was the case until the webthing reminded me):

There's no reason not to nominate and submit what you can come up with. The system -will- let you cast later nominations and override what you previously nominated for--and in the meanwhile, you've got a voice.
I had a supporting membership last year, and have one for this year, too, but next year in Chicago! The process of making lists and trying to talk my friends into joining me there has already begun.
Yay!
