GaFilk set list.

I am home from Georgia and Massachusetts! I am no longer stranded in the snowy South or New England! This is awesome. Also awesome: the traditional posting of the set list from my most recent filk convention, accompanied with lyric links and helpful notations. My backing band was a little unusual, since it was assembled at the Absolute Last Minute, with lots of awesome people stepping up to make sure that my guest of honor concert wasn't a total disaster. Big, big thanks to Dr. Mary Crowell, Amy McNally, Bill and Brenda Sutton, Dave Rood, and Jodi Krangle, for saving my bacon.

I am so grateful to have been GaFilk's Guest of Honor. It was, to repeat myself a bit, a true honor, and I couldn't have had a better time. The GaFilk set list, with arrangement* notes, was as follows:

1. "The Sealskin and the Story and the Sky." (Seanan McGuire, vocals; Bill Sutton, guitar; Brenda Sutton, bodhran; Dave Rood, bass; Dr. Mary Crowell, piano; Amy McNally, fiddle.)
2. "Counting Crows." (Seanan, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, bodhran; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
3. "Mama Said." (Seanan, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, coconut shells; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
4. "Mother of the Crows." (Seanan, vocals; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
5. "Still Catch the Tide" (Talis Kimberley cover). (Seanan, vocals; Jodi Krangle, backing vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, bodhran; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
6. "The Ghost of Lilly Kane." (Seanan, vocals; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
7. "Dear Gina." (Seanan, Katie vocals; Mary, piano, creepy demon vocals; Amy, fiddle.)
8. "Silent Hill." (Seanan, vocals; Mary, piano.)
9. "Dare to Dream." (Seanan, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, bodhran; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
10. "Evil Laugh." (Seanan, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, dinosaur shaker; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, Merav, backing vocals.)
11. "Burn It Down" (Vixy & Tony cover). (Seanan, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, bodhran; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
12. "Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves." (Seanan, Jodi, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, bodhran; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)
13. "My Story Is Not Done." (Seanan, vocals; Bill, guitar; Brenda, bodhran; Dave, bass; Mary, piano; Amy, fiddle.)

The bridge for "Wicked Girls" was...

"Now Brenda beats bodhrans, and Vixy's run off with the fairies,
And Deborah will pour you red wine pressed from sweet poisoned berries.
Autumn signs secrets, and Amy plays tricks,
While Sunnie calls music from wires and sticks,
And the rules that we live by are simple and clear..."

As always: "Counting Crows," "Mama Said," "Mother of the Crows," "The Ghost of Lilly Kane," "My Story Is Not Done," and "Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves" are on Wicked Girls. "Evil Laugh," and "Still Catch the Tide" are on Stars Fall Home (out of print). "Dear Gina" and "Silent Hill" are on Red Roses and Dead Things.

Again, I am so very grateful to the GaFilk concom for having me. I had a wonderful time, and I can't wait to go back.

(*Dave Rood was actually moving around behind me quite a lot, so if I accidentally left him off something, or added him to something incorrectly, please let me know. Assuming you know. Which you may not.)

Creepy only begins to describe the demon violin on Dear Gina. The first time I heard it, I wasn't really sure I was hearing it. From there it progressed to "Is that Amy? Yes, it is. . That's so cool!". Awesome idea and a wonderful set!
The demon violin had me looking around the room too at first, I couldn't tell where that creepy sound was coming from!
I was thrilled to find that it came through clearly on the recording of the concert which went up for Interfilk auction - Wicked Cool to be able to hear it again and share it with folks unable to be in attendance.

Fantastic concert.
It was great to see you at Arisia, and I'm glad you're home safely.
Me, too. :)
Here's hoping for an MP3 release of that first one someday. My selkie playlist really needs some padding, as it only has three songs and none of them are explicit, only evocative.

What are you looking at me like that for? Doesn't everybody have a selkie playlist?
"Still Catch the Tide," "In This Sea," and...?

I do!
Ooh, I forgot "In This Sea". I should add that. The other entries on the list are Loreena McKennitt's "The Old Ways" and, oddly enough, R.E.M.'s "Belong". Like I said, nothing explicit, it's just the way my brain goes when I hear 'em.
And now ALL OF FILK suggests new songs for you.
Sorry about that!

I'm such a newbie to the scene! I hardly know anyone except you and Tom Smith.

With the help of iTunes and ladymondegreen up there, my playlist now looks a little less pathetic.
There's also one on Circle of Ice, a really creepy one. Um, that's a cassette tape of songs sung in a certain part of the SCA, Atlantia, I think. I picked it up in '89, when I graduated from college and went to my very first Worldcon.

I presume you have "The Great Selkie" (you know, "An earthly nurse sits and weeps...."
I do now!

"Circle of Ice" sounds like the very definition of a rare recording.

I have a selkie playlist, but I am the first to admit that I am not like everyone else. :)
Well, you're like me in this one trivial detail, at least. At the risk of spamming Seanan's LJ with a private discussion, whatcha got on yours?
Child (Ballad) Abuse - which I helped write, and is thus perhaps cheating
Still Catch the Tide - Talis Kimberley
Glass Half Full of the Sea - Ben Newman
In This Sea - Seanan McGuire
Seafaring Satyr and Shipful of Monsters - S.J. Tucker
You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me You Seal - (I don't think this is attributed) it's a parody of Lucille
and the grand-daddy of selkie songs:
The Great Selchie of Sule Skerry - Annwn

I probably have more somewhere that are unsorted.
There's Heather Dale's "The Maiden and the Selkie". (Quite possibly in your unsorted pile...*grin*)

Also Joe Kesselman's Stole of the Seal.

Avalon Rising has one on its first album: "The Great Selkie"
I snagged a different artist's version for my now-quite-well-padded playlist. I forget whose. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you for this information,. It will be saved and put with the raw recording of your concert. If the backing performers could please contact me (via email), I will arrange to get you your contributor's copy of the concert.

Thank you again for a wonderful concert at GaFilk.
I'm glad you had a wonderful time at GaFilk. I only wish I could've experienced your concert.

Also, Stars Fall Home is NOT out of print. I have 18 copies available.
Stars Fall Home is absolutely out of print. The fact that some stores still have stock does not change the fact that I no longer have albums, and no more will be made. I've been pointing people in your direction, but I can't claim the album is still widely available.
Oh, then I sit corrected. My apologies.
Not a problem; it's a fine distinction, but it's an important one, especially when I have other people contacting me to request restocks. There will be no more restocks. Other people may have water, but the well is dry as a bone.
That tells me one thing: you're popular!
