The best of 2010: cinematic media edition.

So, like, disclaimers and stuff: this post, more than almost any other, represents 100% personal opinion, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars. I am not drawing from critical sources, focus groups, or anything but my own impressions of things. This means you may disagree with me, and that's totally cool. Just be aware that I speak not from a position of on high, but from a position of "that weird girl who likes weird stuff sometimes."

With all that out of the way, I present...

Seanan's Best Cinematic Media Moments of 2010.

***

Movies.

I went to surprisingly few movies in 2010...or maybe not surprising, if you factor in how insanely busy I've been. Yes, there are some Syfy Originals in here. No, I have no regrets. And so...

Best Horror Movie: The Crazies. Yes, I'm opening my list with a remake. No, I don't care. I probably watched this movie differently than most of the target audience, since I was rooting for the government quarantine squad (good job wiping out mankind, heroes), but I loved it all the same.

Best Bad Horror Movie: Sharktopus. Shut up. And Dinoshark takes a close second place, in part because Dinoshark himself was hanging out on Twitter for a while.

Better Than I Expected: Resident Evil: Afterlife. Did I hate Resident Evil: Extinction? Why, yes. Yes, I did. Did I go to Resident Evil: Afterlife expecting to be horribly disappointed? Again, yes. So when the movie wasn't horrible, I was pleasantly surprised.

Most Unexpected Pleasure: She's Out of My League. This was one of the movies available on my flight to Australia. I watched it on a whim...and I loved it. Seriously, it was sweet and funny and fun, despite all the requisite sex comedy embarrassment jokes. There's one sequence I couldn't watch (the Chasing Amy problem), but it was otherwise awesome.

Best Animated Feature: Tangled. Hate the title, love the film. I cried, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Most Unmitigated Fun: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I'm totally adding this to my list of "movies to watch when you need to be cheered up, lest all humanity feel your undying wrath." Seriously adorable.

Best Comedy: Easy A. Possibly the tamest teen sex comedy ever made, in terms of actual amounts of sex and naughtiness, but the cast was awesome, the script was great, and Emma Stone nailed it. So much win.

Best Movie I Saw In 2010: How to Train Your Dragon. It doesn't take "Best Animated" because it was just plain the best movie of the year, at least for me. Forget genre labels. Hiccup and Toothless rocked. Thank you, Chris Saunders.

***

Television.

I may not have seen that many movies, but wow, did I watch a lot of television. I have no regrets.

Best New Doctor: Eleven. Oh, Matt Smith, never leave us. You make bow ties cool.

Best Surprise Upset On a Reality Show: Did anyone see Lauren winning this season of So You Think You Can Dance? You made my inner Verity proud, lady.

Best New Show: Tower Prep. Beginning to end, this show nailed it, and the thought that we might not get a season two makes my knees go weak. Seriously, if you have the opportunity to catch up, take it.

Most Unexpected New Obsession: Phineas and Ferb. STOP JUDGING ME.

Most Unexpected Loss of Give-a-Shit: The Wizards of Waverly Place. I hate everything about the new season (well, everything except the permanent addition of Mason to the main cast). The current plot arc is terrifying in its social implications, and no amount of sparkly candy coating can change that.

Best Unadulterated Fun: Warehouse 13. It's like a delicious can of whipped cream. The whipped cream is cursed. But it's sooooooo tasty.

Best Single Episode: We have a tie! Between "The Pandorica Opens" (Doctor Who) and "Entrada" (Fringe). I love me some science fiction.

Worst Second Season: Glee. It's gone from "must see TV" to "only if it doesn't conflict with something that doesn't make me cringe constantly." Get it together, people.

Best Season Finale: Another tie! Between "Fathers" (Tower Prep) and "The San Lorenzo Job" (Leverage). Nicely done, gentlemen. Nicely done.

Best Show of the Year: Fringe. Beautifully played, from the end of season two in the summer through to the first half of season three in the fall. I can't wait to see what happens next.

***

Next up, books, comics, and anything else I think of that needs listing. (Best Kitten of 2010: Thomas!)

What were your bests of 2010?

Oh, Tangled. I think it's probably my favourite film of the entire year. It definitely goes on my list of Films to Watch When I Feel Bad.

Doctor Who and Fringe just fill me with such love. Fringe is really my new Alias, in terms of how many times I just rewatch all of the episodes in a giant binge. And Doctor Who is just part of my life - it's entwined with my childhood and I just think that there's no possible way for me to not watch it.
Word.
Most of my media is movies and video games. I don't much watch TV.

Best Surprise: Tangled. I loved this film. I've seen in twice and if we didn't have a bunch of films we want to see coming out in the next few weeks I'd insist on a third viewing. I was very afraid walking into it. I agree that the title sucks, but if it GOT PEOPLE TO SEE THE MOVIE and ensures Disney DOES MORE OF THIS, then fine.

Best Pandering To Alicia's Pseudo-Intellectual Streak: Inception. I really liked this film quite a lot. It has major flaws, but I still really enjoyed it.

Best Pandering to Alicia's Gung-Ho Streak: Scott Pilgrim. This is to be expected: I met my husband on a video game fansite. Yeah. Though I saw this film with one of my little brothers (it came out while I was out of town with my parents) and it made for awesome bonding as we ate popcorn and cheered and embarrassed my mother.

Best Use of Setting: The Fighter. Which is set in Lowell, Mass. A town I know relatively well. I KNEW the streets they filmed on. That gives me a kick. It's also a great flick, honestly.

Best Soundtrack: TRON: Legacy. It's the only Daft Punk I can get my husband to listen to without screaming. He actively likes it.

Best Video Gaming Experience: Mass Effect 2. The game makes me laugh. And Cry. And scream at things. And be suddenly glad I saved the insect people in Mass Effect even though they set off my KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT WITH FIRE instincts.

Handheld Runner Up: Miles Edgeworth. BECAUSE I AM A LAWYER RARGH. Even though the Ace Attorney games are set in LAWYER HELL.

Handheld Runner Up 2: Dragon Quest 9, for pure childlike joy.
Excellent!
Best moment of movie audience agreement: We went to see Scott Pilgrim on opening night, and a trailer came up. It looked pretty bad, but it wasn't until 'by M. Night Shyamalan' flashed on the screen that the entire audience groaned as one, and then, realizing what had happened, broke into spontaneous laughter.
Hee.

I've been looking forward to Tangled - it just doesn't come out here for another week.
It's really lovely.
But does the whipped cream contain potassium benzoate? Because if it does I'll bet Claudia will want to do some experiments on it.
Only if I don't make it fresh.
Based on what I've seen so far:

Best Movie: Inception
Best Non-Genre Movie: The Social Network
Best Animated: Toy Story 3
Best Unexpected Pleasure, Television: Mike and Molly
Best Movie Quote: "Mark, you're going to spend the rest of your life thinking that women don't like you because you're a nerd. I tell you from the bottom of my heart, that's not true. It's because you're an asshole." - from Aaron Sorkin's brilliant script to "The Social Network"

In in complete agreement with you on Fringe, Matt Smith (with a Best New Companions to Amy and Rory), Warehouse 13, and Lauren (though I did think of her as a contender starting at about week 4). I partially agree on Best Single Episode - I think of "The Pandorica Opens" and "The Big Bang" as one episode, and as much as I loved season 3 so far, my favorite Fringe of the year is "Peter".
See, I really thought they were setting Lauren up for a second place, with Kent for the win. I was pleasantly surprised!

I feel the same way about Glee. The only reason I'm still watching it, as far as I can tell, is that there isn't really anything else on in that time slot that I'm interested in. If I forgot it was Tuesday and missed it, I do not think I'd bother to catch up.

Fringe was so good this year, I hope it survives Fridays and we get another season.
Oh, please, oh, please...

Favorite movie:Black Swan
Best animated film: Toy Story 3 (and the short with the bikini girls who look like Joan from Mad Men)
Favorite TV: I just started watching Dexter and have been enjoying it.
Favorite Documentary: What Would Jesus Buy? about the performance group Rev. Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping (now the Church of Life After Shopping). I was worried it would be a shaming kind of movie, but instead it was really great.(It is also streaming on Netflix.)

I plan to catch up on Sharktopus, Tangled and How to Train Your Dragon.
Excellent.
I would put Toy Story 3 ahead of Tangled. I might put it ahead of just about anything I saw this year (even if Inception was a lot more ambitious). Then again, I get to the movies less and less and barely watch any TV these days. But that doesn't diminish my love for Toy Story 3. Which also can make you cry.

(I cried at Tangled, but probably not at the same thing you did, since I have a "sad parents are sad" trigger these days. Which is why I doubt I will ever watch Up again from the beginning.)
See, the end message of Toy Story 3 bothered me. A lot. I don't appreciate the idea that everything must be given up because it's outgrown, rather than entering a changed state.

My Ponies are happier with me, thanks.

And also, air hugs to you. I fully understand on the other things.

What's the plot arc on Wizards that has you so concerned?

And now for something completely different:

Oh, I don't know. How about...

...the Council tricking them into "revealing wizardry"?
...the fact that everyone's lives will be ruined if the battle goes through?
...the whole "mortals can't date werewolves" card, played at the eleventh hour, to spoil Alex and Mason's relationship?
...the idea of Max being the "ideal wizard," because he was too lazy/dumb to play along?

If the Council is trying to take over the wizarding world by creating wizards too dumb to live, they're doing it right.

Random fact about The Crazies; it was filmed 15 minutes from my parents' house, in Lenox, IA. You can see my uncle's CPA office in the main street shots. :3

And I almost got to work on set. Damned almost....
The original or the remake?

and the thought that we might not get a season two makes my knees go weak.

SRSLY. If we don't get a second season after that last episode, I will probably cry!
I soooooo agree with that!

My first thought on reading the Bad Horror Movies entry was "When are they going to make Dinosharktopus?"
...oh, dear.
Like you said, I saw few movies this year. My Favorites are:

Best Eyecandy: Prince of Persia, Sands of Time: I'm sorry, but Jake Gyllenhaal with long hair just makes me drool.

Most Eagerly Awaited: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1; I am hooked on the series.

Best Animated: Tangled; Went to see it in 3D, would have preferred it in 2D. Other than that, I love Zachery Levi as Flynn Ryder.

Television shows:

Best New Show: Tower Prep! Thank you for getting me addicted to it. Also, Drew Van Acker is nice eyecandy.
Neat.
My kid was horribly offended by the How To Train Your Dragon trailers, as she'd read the book first. With trepidation, I let her go to school when they were watching the movie. She came back saying that the movie was more like a majormajormajor prequel to the book, with some of the characters having the same names, but that the movie was okay on its own.

High praise indeed, considering my kid and her opinions on Fidelity To The Book!

I haven't seen it yet. O:(
It's excellent, promise.

Heeeee.
Sharing in the love fest for all things Fringe, SYTYCD, and Leverage. (Smart-geeky fun, OMG-if-only-I-could-do-that fun, and clever-geeky fun... in no particular order.)
Awesome!
The Crazies. Yes, I'm opening my list with a remake.
On my Instant Netflix queue! Netflix thinks I'll like it.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I'm totally adding this to my list of "movies to watch when you need to be cheered up, lest all humanity feel your undying wrath." Seriously adorable.
We spent a couple hours watching the extras last night. So much love.

Easy A. Possibly the tamest teen sex comedy ever made, in terms of actual amounts of sex and naughtiness, but the cast was awesome, the script was great, and Emma Stone nailed it. So much win.
On my Netflix queue! I've heard good things.

Best New Doctor: Eleven.
I think this category was rigged.

Best Single Episode: We have a tie! Between "The Pandorica Opens" (Doctor Who) and "Entrada" (Fringe). I love me some science fiction.
Yaaaay.

Best Show of the Year: Fringe. Beautifully played, from the end of season two in the summer through to the first half of season three in the fall. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Wheeee.
Yes.

That category was rigged.

BECAUSE I SAID IT WAS GOING TO BE.

Mwahahahaahahahaha fear my ultimate power.
I'm still not sure how I feel about Lauren winning this year's SYTYCD. Of the three finalists, I was rooting for Robert even though I knew he probably didn't stand a chance of winning with Lauren and Kent there. Ultimately, though, I couldn't shake the disappointment of Alex getting taken out by an injury. He was so amazing, I was rooting for him to take the whole thing.

Don't get me wrong... I liked Lauren well enough and she was a treat to watch when I got to see the tour in October, but I wasn't sure I liked her well enough to win. I liked the girls from the previous season better. Katherine is just gorgeous and Eleanor owns my heart. I'd watch her do anything.
I miss Eleanor. I really, really do.

Lauren winning was...hmm. I knew Robert didn't have a chance; I think it was Alex's season to lose, right up until his injury killed him. I hate that Jose was allowed to stay as long as he did. But of Lauren or Kent, I think Lauren needed it more, you know?

Tangled starts here next week and my wife is dying to see it. I like animated films too, so have no problem with taking her to see it.
I hate to say it, but I agree with you about Glee. I still get a kick out of it when they do a cool song, but there's just something lacking about this season that I can't quite put my finger on. I keep hoping they'll get it together soon. I do love Brittany's random comments, though.
It's brilliant, you should go.
*sniggers* Thank you for echoing Best Movie of 2010, hands down no question about it. I have a five year old who would like to model his Toothless costumer for you.

Oh, and about that obsession? The three Perrys on the bed would like you to know they approve.
Nice.
I was really turned off by the trailers of Tangled... it looked to me like Disney ripping off Shrek, and I had absolutely no interest. I might have to actually check it out, if so many people say it's actually good.
One disservice I think the trailers did to the movie is that this is a story about two (admittedly very trope-based) potential love interests developing an actual power balance in a relationship between equals, based at least somewhat on mutual respect and admiration. Rapunzel isn't just a virtuous, naive girl; Flynn isn't just a dashing rescuer; even the horse isn't just a Standard Issue Disney Anthropomorphic Pet.

The protagonists rescue each other. They're both competent, they both have moments of dumb, and interestingly they each have at least one moment in the movie of presenting their respective origins as something they realize nobody wants to hear angst about.

The most morally upright character spends a big chunk of the movie as the primary antagonist, and yes, this does mean that at least one of the protagonists is in the wrong. And, astounding for a Disney animated feature, not all misbehavior is punished!

So first there was The Princess and the Frog, in which "happily ever after" involves something other than "career as arm ornament". And then there's this movie, where the moral of the story may be to take charge of your own life rather than wait for some stronger person of any gender to take care of you. I'm really starting to be happy with the direction Disney Princess movies are leading my nieces!

I love Fringe! I just re-watched the first season on DVD, and it was just as good as I remember it being. For some reason, they stopped playing it here partway through the second season (grrr!), so I guess I'll just have to wait for the DVDs now, or hope for a miracle.
Wow! That blows. Definitely get the DVDs, the show just gets better.
Another Fringe fan? AWESOME! This show needs so much more love!
It just keeps getting more awesome! In defiance of ALL NATURAL LAW.
