Leave a comment, win an ARC.

I'm too tired to be creative, so it's once more time for everyone's favorite ARC giveaway, the random drawing. To participate...

1) Leave a comment telling me why you like Toby. As a reply to the entry, please, not as a reply to someone else's comment. Replies to other people's comments can't win anything.
2) That's all.

But there's a twist! This time, I'm selecting three winners of a signed ARC of An Artificial Night, the third October Daye adventure. The first will be chosen at noon Pacific time on Sunday, August 8th; the second will be chosen at noon Pacific time on Monday, August 9th; and the third will be chosen at eight PM Pacific time on Monday, August 9th. All winners will have twenty-four hours from the time they're announced to provide me with a mailing address before I pick another winner.

The winner will be chosen via random number generation, so going "ooo, ooo, pick me" doesn't improve your chances, it just makes me faintly grumpy. So comment, and let me know why you like Toby—her world, her stories, her as a person, whatever. Maybe you could win an early look!

I like Toby because she does worse with mornings than I do.
I love Toby because I want to be her when I grow up!

Of course, that involves having a plan to grow up. Ever.
I like Toby because sometimes she's just screamingly hostile to the whole world. And she has awesome, awesome pets.

I like Toby because she understands personal commitment and because she's willing to mentor young fae.

Lola
I like Toby's world because you have taken familiar elements of fairy tales and old stories, updated them, and given them your own twist. I like Toby because she's flawed instead of perfect and all powerful, she cares but has trouble getting close to people, she's funny and sarcastic.
Many reasons: She is damaged, but not broken irrevocably. Even with all she's lost, and after struggling to not get close to anyone, she's starting to open up and trust. She's an adult, who takes responsibility for her decisions. She's fiercely loyal. I love the name October Daye. It's just cool. :)
Toby as a person....is a UF female who doesn't make it her mission in life to be a snarky jerk and mistake that for "strong." She's been through some really crushing stuff, and it appropriately effects her world view, without her being a lazy version of "kick-ass heroine".

Toby's world/stories...are a perfect boundary (for lack of a better word) between the old mythic fiction/UF and the new kick-ass UF, a great blend of the magical (as opposed to, perhaps, "stick a vamp/wolf/faery in and call it uf") and mystery/adventure.
I like Toby because she is more capable than she gives herself credit for. She does things hoping for the best outcome, and because it needs to be done, but she doesn't think of herself as a superhero.
I like Toby because she doesn't give up.
Toby is a strong but believable and realistic character. And she kicks ass.
i love toby because of how caffeine addicted she is and because weird stuff happens everyday in her world and doesn't make her hyperventilate
I like Toby's interactions with the King of Cats
I like Toby because even when she doesn't see something, it's not because she's stupid; she's very smart, she just gets into a way of seeing things and maybe not from the angle she needs to be looking at them.

If that made sense. I'm slightly tipsy. But Toby would be fun to hang out with, I think. She's tough and smart and maybe needs to de-stress. :)
I love Toby because she's one of the very few female protagonists that I have never wanted to smack. She's tough without being unnecessarily bitchy, she's emotional without being weepy, she has a good sense of humor. I would like Toby if I met her in real life (and then I would probably die horribly, but my death would be avenged, damnit).

I also like Toby because I could see her getting coffee with Rachel Morgan and Harry Dresden, and that is a fun mental image (the work-talk alone would be priceless!).
Toby is a fascinating character and I am so excited to get to know her and her world better!
I like Toby because she stubbornly insists on remaining honorable & compassionate, her own best interests be damned.
I like Toby because she makes mistakes and fumbles and screws up and is REAL.
I like Toby's mindset, and I enjoy being in it. She's not sickly sweet, but she hasn't given up either.
I like Toby because she's smart and strong and brave but can ask for help and rely on her friends when she needs to.
I like Toby because she's growing.
I like Toby because of how much she cares about the people close to her, even as she tries to hide that, even from herself. I also admire the way she keeps going in the face of adversity, but it's her caring that draws me to her character the most.
I like Toby because I get here. That in itself is a pretty awesome thing.
I like Toby because she never gives up. Even when life kicks her in the teeth, she sucks it up and keeps on going. There's no better way of saying "Fuck you!" to the universe than that. I love it.
"She is a fresh of breathair" was honestly the first thing I wrote, like a distinctively lumpy lump thingymabob that I am, so I think I'll rephrase that and instead say that I think she's a breath of fresh air, in a market of gungho uber-heroines.

She's cool and I want to see what happens between her and Tybalt. :p
