Leave a comment, win an ARC.

I'm too tired to be creative, so it's once more time for everyone's favorite ARC giveaway, the random drawing. To participate...

1) Leave a comment telling me why you like Toby. As a reply to the entry, please, not as a reply to someone else's comment. Replies to other people's comments can't win anything.
2) That's all.

But there's a twist! This time, I'm selecting three winners of a signed ARC of An Artificial Night, the third October Daye adventure. The first will be chosen at noon Pacific time on Sunday, August 8th; the second will be chosen at noon Pacific time on Monday, August 9th; and the third will be chosen at eight PM Pacific time on Monday, August 9th. All winners will have twenty-four hours from the time they're announced to provide me with a mailing address before I pick another winner.

The winner will be chosen via random number generation, so going "ooo, ooo, pick me" doesn't improve your chances, it just makes me faintly grumpy. So comment, and let me know why you like Toby—her world, her stories, her as a person, whatever. Maybe you could win an early look!

I like Toby because she was turned into a fish for ten years. Also, she has some kickassery. Though I wanted to slap her for continuing to let people wander off alone in the second book.
I like Toby because she got turned into a fish and didn't go insane. That and she adopted (Spike) the rose goblin.
I love many things about Toby and her world, but I find that I have the dumb right now and can't brain, so I will say that I love Toby because she made friends with the Liudaeg (however that's spelled).
I like Toby because she is real; a sustainable, believable character, (within the bounds of an alternative history/universe).
I love Toby's ability to separate what she wants to do from what must be done.

Also, she's competent, which is a special fetish of mine.
I love that Toby is one of the most realistic characters that I've ever read, she has limits and she knows them, but it doesn't stop her from doing her job (in the most kick-ass way possible).
I like Toby because she's a smartass...
I like Toby because she kinda reminds me of Veronica Mars...if Veronica Mars were a faerie. And an adult.

Also, because you created her, and you rock. ;)
Toby sees the parts of San Francisco I've always suspected were there...
I love Toby's attitude, especially considering everything she's been through, but also that she doesn't forget where she's been and the people she's affected.
I like Toby because there just plain aren't enough kickass, cynical female characters around, and a lot of the ones that are around, Toby could put to shame with her sheer kickassery.

Also, she is addictive like crack.

I like Toby because no matter how many times she's knocked down, she gets back up. Even when it really isn't in her best interest.

I heart Toby because her life is the ultimate example of 'life is what happens to you while you were making other plans'.

I love Toby because she has a very large soft spot for kitties. Who doesn't love kitties?
I love Toby's maturity---she has a tragic past, but she refuses to let it dominate her.
I love how stubborn Toby can be... she has a strong will and that is a double-edged trait for her sometimes.
i love Toby (and her world) for their combination of grit and vulnerability - it's a winning combo :)
I like Toby because she improvises and she's clever about her improvising. I also like that she doesn't magically know everything that's going on, and she sometimes makes bad decisions.

That and she's like a coffee-propelled piece of Samsonite luggage - you know, like in the ad from the eighties where the gorilla throws it down a cliff and it's still in one piece at the bottom.

I remember useless things, sometimes.
Toby's cool. And I am tired.
I like Toby because she doesnt ever want to give up.
I like Toby because sometimes things get to be too much for her and she falls down, but she gets back up again.
Toby is a complex person who has amazing skills, even if she thinks they are weak. She is vulnerable to the losses in her life, but continues to function. She recognizes monsters, but can befriend them. These are a few of the reasons I enjoy Toby.
I like Toby because she reminds me of the line from Neil Gaiman:

"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places."

And I've been looking at pictures of wombats. Wee!
Thanks Seanan!

I love Toby because she always interesting and has an awesome sense of humor.
