Leave a comment, win an ARC.

I'm too tired to be creative, so it's once more time for everyone's favorite ARC giveaway, the random drawing. To participate...

1) Leave a comment telling me why you like Toby. As a reply to the entry, please, not as a reply to someone else's comment. Replies to other people's comments can't win anything.
2) That's all.

But there's a twist! This time, I'm selecting three winners of a signed ARC of An Artificial Night, the third October Daye adventure. The first will be chosen at noon Pacific time on Sunday, August 8th; the second will be chosen at noon Pacific time on Monday, August 9th; and the third will be chosen at eight PM Pacific time on Monday, August 9th. All winners will have twenty-four hours from the time they're announced to provide me with a mailing address before I pick another winner.

The winner will be chosen via random number generation, so going "ooo, ooo, pick me" doesn't improve your chances, it just makes me faintly grumpy. So comment, and let me know why you like Toby—her world, her stories, her as a person, whatever. Maybe you could win an early look!

I like Toby because she wears her cloud of Noir Detective Doom so well.
What I like about Toby? Oh gawd, where to start?

I like that she's not shy and retiring.
I like that many times she doesn't know what she's doing.
I like that she loooves coffee. As much as I do!
I like that she has cats.
I like that she was once a P.I.
I like that she pushes ahead even when common sense would say "Stop. You're ticking off someone who can squash you like a bug here!"
Best of all, I like that she cares.
I love Toby because she's a creature of both worlds, each cut her to the core some days, and yet, she holds to her human heart as much as her faerie blood and values each of them. She endures. She is not perfect--and is often, in her own damaged heart--blind to how others really see her, but she is loyal and she loves.

I love it that the fae in her world are a lot like traditional fae--they have teeth and claws. They bite. They can break your heart...and then have it for supper.

And...I love Tybalt. So. So. Much. :)

I like Toby because she's a good example. She got hell thrown at her, and got really hurt. But through the course of the books she's taken steps to continue on, and she's even improved herself. She's put herself back together and taken chances to open up without losing the core of herself. She's also taken several very scary situations and turned the people she's met there into friends. Also, she lives in San Francisco, which is a town I miss quite a bit and enjoy "returning to." I think I loved her since she was a check girl at Safeway, because I was all "OMG, I know that Safeway! This chick is totally existing in my universe."
I like Toby because she a fresh take on the character and probably the only one that was turned into a fish.
I like Toby because she is tough as nails, acts sure of herself when she needs to even when she's not, stubborn, and not always right.

I really identify with these qualities ;).
I've always been fascinated by the idea of Changelings and I love Toby's journey of figuring out who she is and where she fits in the mortal and Fae world. She has a remarkable sense of humor and still enjoys life even though its tough on her.
I like Toby's loyalty to her chosen people, and that she can be cranky.
I like Toby because she doesn't always figure things out, possibly because of the amount of crap she goes through in a book addles those fine detective skills...
I like Toby because she's real. And I root for her. A lot.
Toby is believable as a person. I mean, other than fae stuff, I meet people like her every day: addicted to coffee, snarky, strange tragic pasts, etc.

Her world is delightful because we have no proof that it's not actually in existence. It very well could be.
I like Toby because she's spunky, she's got guts, she makes sense.
I like the books because they make me laugh and cry, they take me away to another world, they glue me to the page. They're filled with colour and scent and taste and humanity and magic.
I like the world - I would, I think, like to meet it, although I'm aware that is dangerous....
I love the way Toby keeps getting up and powering through no matter how many times she gets her ass kicked right back down. :)
I enjoy Toby's grumpiness. Grumpy people are always more fun that the whole "Yay I am now part of ~Faerie~" people.
I like Toby because, like the Borg, she learns. Also like the Borg, she keeps coming until you are dead. Unlike the Borg, she is a good guy and has that pesky little thing called "independent thought."

So basically I like Toby because she is like the Borg, except she's a lot smarter and on the side of the angels. Also, she has cats and a rose goblin. Cagney, Lacey, Spike and Tybalt ftw.
Hey, stranger!

I like how you include Tybalt in the "list of cats Toby has." XD

I love Toby because of her unflagging loyalty to her friends and to those she feels need protecting. Also, as another fan commented, she dresses sensibly! There are urban fantasy books I simply couldn't get into, because I felt like the author was breathing down my neck, gushing, "LOOK AT HOW AWESOME SHE LOOKS! You can tell she's badass because she's HOT." Whereas we know Toby is strong because we see her being strong. It's refreshing!
I love Toby's attitude towards all the craziness she is presented with. I like her position as an in between of Faerie and the real world, and I love the complexities of Faerie and all of the delightful and not so delightful things found therein. I'm just really excited to see what crazy shenanigans Toby gets up to next!
Ooo, ooo, pick me pick me!!1! XP

Everyone has said it better, but I like Toby because she just... keeps on pluggin'. And she's very down-to-earth.
I like Toby because she deals.

Her life sucks.

Her entire world basically sucks.

And she deals with it. Not always as gracefully as she could, but she deals.
I'd like to be Toby when I grow up. But could we skip the part about the koi pond?
Part of why I like Toby is that she makes me remember why I like San Francisco (haven't been out there since before my grandmother died)
I like how she's between 2 worlds, and determined to do things her way.
Hmmm... because she won't hesitate to punch you in the face if she thinks you deserve it. And maybe even if you don't deserve it but you've pissed her off enough.

Why do I like Toby? Maybe it's because she's intelligent, strong-willed, honorable and only slightly fucked up in obvious ways.

Or maybe I have a thing for changelings.

I'm not sure. One of those two, certainly.
I like Toby because she is absolutely oblivious to the fact that she's making some seriously awesome friends, and because she would have started the story all in book one without that whole being forced thing, but these "friends" are the sort to force the issue.
